In OVERTIME, Patrick says to Todd Blackledge "I've got an important question."
Blackledge: "Go ahead."
Patrick: "What's Britney doing with her life?"
Blackledge: "Who?"
Patrick: "Britney."
Blackledge: "Britney who?"
Patrick: "Britney Spears. What's she doing with her career?"
Blackledge: "Why do we care at this point? Is she here?"
Ball is snapped immediately following this exchange and Georgia scores WINNING TD --- again in OVERTIME.
Yep, last play of an overtime game and Mike Patrick, unprovoked mind you, wants to know about Britney Spears' Career. Riiiiiiight.

It was even worse than that. Patrick was trying to lighten the moment (for no good reason) and Blackledge clearly didn't want to play. But Patrick just kept going with the "joke". It was really awkward because I just imagined Blackledge thinking "man, does ESPN really think this goof is better than Franklin?"

He didn't say career. He said "life". You have to get a copy of it to get the verbatim. I also don't think he prefaced the question. He asked "What is Britney doing with her life?" and Blackledge didn't know what he was talking about. "Britney who?" and Patrick says "Spears!" as if it were obvious. He then repeats the question and blackledge asks "Is she here?" presumably wondering what brought on the non sequitur perhaps a shot of Britney in the crowd.

But yeah, Patrick is losing it.
I'm glad I am not the only one that found this to be really stupid. Here I was watching a great college football game and Patrick shoots his mouth off with quite possibly the dumbest thing ever said during a broadcast.

ReplyDeleteMaybe if it had been Madden saying "This guy, he wants to win, so he's going to throw it to this guy," you guys would be happy.
The problem is I think all of those broadcaster idiots are paid by the word. They blather on and on and on and say nothing. "He has all the tools", "They know what they have to do today", "He's a real speedster". If they would fire two or three off of each broadcast team it would make the enjoyment of the game much greater! As it is I have to turn the sound off to enjoy the game!
ReplyDeleteThe guy was just trying to be funny and the joke didn't work. This was a huge moment in a huge SEC game and he was just sarcastically trying to pretend that there was nothing really exciting happening. It'd be like approaching the edge of the Grand Canyon and saying to your buddy, "well, nothing to see here." And he'd go "yeah, heh." And that'd be it. It's no big deal. The other guy didn't get it...move on.

ReplyDeleteIt was clearly a joke that the other commentator (and most people on this board) didn't get. The whole point was to come up with something inane, pretending like the game wasn't worth talking about or exciting at the moment. It backfired, and his timing was perhaps ill-advised but I give him props for the effort.
ReplyDeleteAnother big goof in this game was to cut away to a segment about the tailgating food and missing a play on a scoring drive at the end of the half.
ReplyDeleteESPN Coverage is a joke and the announcing is even worse. Noboody got the joke because it wasn't funny! This is another reason mute the game. By the way, does every Bama fan at the stadium cover themselves with paint? Or is that ESPN's way of showing the passion of college football? Just show the football game and stop taling about Dreamland (the most overrated BBQ joint in Tuscaloosa).
