I understand that Fans get upset when "their" team loses, and sometime cry. But a broadcaster live on-air? I think that's unprecedented. Well that's exactly what Yankees radio announcer Suzyn Waldman did during the postgame show on WFAN last night. Here's the audio.WCBS 880 Audio

God schadenfreude is so rich sometime(s). But in all seriousness there is NEVER an instance when a broadcaster should cry live on air. I understand her allegiance to the team and the emotions tied to working for them, but even John Sterling sounded shocked that she was tearing up.
You can also relive Suzyn's greatest moment ever when Roger Clemens came back earlier in the year if you'd like. I'm trying my hardest not to pile on here....trust me.

It would have been acceptable, to me at least, if a broadcaster had cried over Mike Coolbaugh that night or something along those lines. Not that you want to or that you'd be trying to. When the Memphis Grizzlies' pbp guy passed away on a road trip 2-3 years ago, his replacement couldn't keep it together in the postgame show when he talked about what had happened...and that was extremely moving, especially because the game was that night.- AnonPoint taken, and by me saying never that was in reference to wins and losses. Death and real life issues like that are the exception.

I, too, would disagree that sometimes there are moments, good or bad, when an emotional broadcast overcomes the moment.
ReplyDeleteTo say that a broadcaster shouldn't get "emotional" means that they can't get excited when a team wins, or feel down or somber when they lose.
One "emotional" moment could be when umpire John McSherry collapsed during the Reds season opener in Cincinnati, 1996. Who could not be emotional watching a tragedy unfold?
When LA Dodgers commentator Don Drysdale passed away in 1993, the broadcast crew waited until after the game to tell Vin Scully, as it was certainly an emotional moment and to carry on during the broadcast would have been near impossible.
While "death and real-life issues are the exception", what defines the rule? When you spend your career covering persons you come to know on a more personable level, you cannot help sometimes but be overcome by the "real life" of not seeing them again.
I don't think she was blubbering throughout the whole post-game. Just briefly overwhelmed. Nothing wrong with that IMHO.
Ok, I can MAYBE see her crying if they won the damned WS overcoming the untimely death of Steinbrenner.

That said, she has a terrific face for radio.

ReplyDeleteI will be the first one to laugh at Suzyn Waldman and John Sterling - but I really didn't think this was so bad. Her voice was wavering, and it wasn't because the Yankees had lost, but because they all suspect that this was Torre's last game. I don't know how long she's been doing these games, but she's been there for several years, and I'm sure it'll be strange for them to have a different manager there next year.

Waldman and Sterling are perfect representatives for Yankees fans. I can't take any Yankee broadcast seriously when those two are announcing. Maybe if Waldman grew some thick skin, lost her accent and became a professional she wouldn't cry or be in hysterics next time she puts her head up Clemens's asshole.

You figure these beat reporters-- regardless of what you think of them (or the team they're covering) personally-- spend countless hours with the players and coaches they follow over the course of each season. That's bound to create a certain familial bond. And especially in the New York clubhouse, a place that's gone through some really emotional stuff during Torre's tenure-- his prostate cancer, the last month of the 2001 season which was literally a parade of tears every single goddamn day, some disappointments, some deaths, and the ongoing need to stick together on the field under the oppressive off-field reign of Steinbrenner-- I can imagine that even from an "unbiased" reporting standpoint, it would be difficult for anyone, man or woman, to separate themselves from the feelings that were flowing in that locker room last night. It's not worth explaining, because the Yankee haters will bash it anyway, but those of us lucky enough to have followed this team from the beginning know how special the Torre tenure has been. I know I sobbed like a baby watching his press conference on TV-- I can't imagine what it would have been like in person.

It isn't my style, and I found unintentionally humorous, but she was right about much of what she said. It may be unlikely we will ever see a run like this Yankees team has been. They will not be as good next year, especially if King George busts the team up to bring in more overpaid, aging ex-stars. I think Willie Mays is a free agent!

When he died, I cried for four straight days. After that, I cried once a week until the first week of the 1980 season. On Aug. 2, 1980, I threw a barbecue party because I didn't want to think about the one year anniversary of Munson's death. I didn't want to cry that day.

I'm a reporter, and a woman, and I don't think Waldman's reaction was professional. But neither does it set feminism back -- she's one person doing one job, and given all the shit she takes from people like some of the commenters here, it's not an easy one. There's a lot to make fun of here, for sure, but she doesn't deserve to be talked about like something subhuman.

I have been listening to the Yanks games on my XM for the last 4 years, and I've gotta say while Suzyn is one of the VERY best statisticians in any booth in the majors, her on-air personality is just boring and tough to listen to.

ReplyDeleteleaving aside all the knee-jerk "YANKEES SUCK!" foolishness, let's start at the beginning. first of all, this broadcast is the new york yankees' radio network, so OF COURSE they're biased! does anyone remember ken harrelson on WGN back in the day? local crews who call games are ALWAYS biased. ESPN has an entire segment devoted to local radio people screaming their fool heads off about their teams. the allegations of "she's not objective!" are, therefore, stupid.
secondly, could some of you people be more sexist, vulgar and disgusting? you hide behind the anonymity of the internet and just let out every poisonous, hateful thought you've ever had. you'd never in a million years say any of these things face-to-face. telling suzyn waldman to "get back in the kitchen" and hurling degrading epithets like the c-word at her just shows how stupid, petty, hateful and juvenile some of you can be. would you ever call a woman you don't know this stuff to her face? i don't think so.
finally, there's nothing wrong with emotion in sports. how many of you cried when you watched "field of dreams" or "brian's song"? i thought that was at least some of the point of sports. a local color commentator giving in to the natural emotion of sport is part of the job. it happens all the time. the fact that the team is the yankees, who you all hate for basically no justifiable reason, doesn't change that at all.

it depends, i remember the 2005-2006 season of the buffalo sabres....it was like a fairytale story a team that was never given a shot to win, made it all the way to the playoffs, and sustained huge injuries but pushed it to game 7 in the ecf and lost it.

ReplyDeleteI'm a Red Sox fan, and remember Bob Lobel (TV sportcaster for WBZ in Boston), doing the postgame wrapup for Gam6 1986 World Series with tears in his eyes. It was very poignant, as anyone who was watching was feeling the exact same way.

ReplyDeleteI hate the Yankees and have for years. I listen to lots of games on XM radio and she is not the best but there are worse male baseball announcers out there.
ReplyDeleteHer emotion was somewhat understandable. These are players and coaches she has had a working relationship with for some time and she "feels their pain."
She shouldbe fired immediately, what a disgrace to the Yankees and baseball as a whole.
ReplyDeleteWhat I hate is that everyone's looking at the fact she's a woman and not as a reporter. Man or woman, unless it's death or catastrophe -- sign off before the waterworks begin. There's crying in baseball all right, just not in public.

Part of being human is having emotions. How sad is it that men cannot cry because it is not macho and she cannot cry because it is not professional. But when John Sterling is emotional about a ball going out of the park thats okay.

You know it's long been rumored she used to be Steinbrenner's mistress, back before he joined the Drooler Academy. The Clemens thing was hilarious enough. It sounded like Roger's mother was announcing his return... Now this? I'm amazed she can cry or speak at all, what with all those Yankee d**ks in her mouth!

I had a narrow nose, which made my friends to comment on the same. I had fallen in depression and did not recover until I got a cure for the same with Rhinoplasty non-surgical nose job done. Good post to go… Thanks guys!
ReplyDeleteThis is what makes Suzyn real to her audience. Shes not a fake sports broadcaster, she shows emotion, shes a fan. All these broadcasters are so fake now a days its great to hear broadcasters who are fans of there teams announce the games. Nothings wrong with showing some emotion.
