Punto clearly lined to left field, but apparently Chip Caray saw it differently and basically blew the most exciting call of the game....
He did recover quickly, but what in the hell does, "Raburn evens the ledger," mean? The score is already tied before he throws the ball in. With that said, it wasn't a completely bad game. Ron Darling called Nick Punto, Jason, numerous times, and he mentioned Brett Favre at one point as well, but it could have been worse.
Update: Twins take it, and will hop on a plane to NYC tonight! Great game.
Fisted
ReplyDeleteReally good game. Very bad game call. It seems to be a trend at the Metrodome this week.
ReplyDeleteCaray and Darling are absolutely brutal. And "Raburn evens the ledger" was Caray's attempt to say the Raburn redeemed himself for allowing a lead-off triple that should only have been a single. Did I mention these guys are awful?
ReplyDeleteI feel terrible for Atlanta fans. These guys were brutal.
ReplyDeleteI think this pic says it all:

I'll give Caray credit for the ledger line, as it might reference Raburn's earlier gaffe.
ReplyDeleteBut what about these?
1: He asks if this will be the "last ninth inning of a regular-season game at the Metrodome" then pauses and says, "the answer to that question is Yes. Will it be the final game in the Metrodome? That we don't know."
2: Twins in a late-inning jam: "If the Twins get out of this one..." (pause 10 seconds of silence) Darling pipes in: "Destiny would be on the Twins side if they get out of this one."
jackasses like Chip and Joe Buck are proof why nepotism sucks
ReplyDeletethe real epic fail was the whole "never count out the Tigers... just like Detroit, the city will be back..." the whole transitive property of a tiebreaking game to cure all of Michigan's 40 years of economic decline would have been a sight to see, unfortunately, I recall the Spartans also failing to deliver their economic salvation in final four...
ReplyDeleteNumber of posts until first "epic fail" comment: 8. Now waiting for first RickRoll.
ReplyDelete(Caray reminds of Brent Musberger, whose awesomely awful calls in the '95 M's/Yanks ALDS finished off with "in the corner is Bernie!" as Gerald Williams dug Martinez's double out from the LF wall. It was like one last error to send us all home.)
Chip is brutal. The "line drive base hit" gets a pass from a qualified announcer - which he is most definitely not. In Atlanta, hearts are breaking everywhere because Boog Sciambi is going to ESPN which means Braves fans will suffer through 162 games with this no-talent spawn at the TV mike. Go easy on Ron Darling, he's fine working with Gary Cohen and Keith Hernandez on SNY. Chip drags his analyst down with him.
ReplyDeleteThe guy is by far the worst baseball announcer I have ever heard, and I say that somebody who has MLB.com and watches a lot of out of market games. He sounds like a guy impersonating an announcer, not a real one, a complete and utter phony.
ReplyDeleteMay I also ask how in the hell MLB assigns Randy Marsh to the plate for that game? I say that as a Braves fan who watched last night's game as a baseball fan. Marsh is bad umpire; his strike zone is all over the place, he has a short fuse, and he misses too many calls (e.g. Inge getting hit.) Whichever team lost that game would have had a lot to say about Randy Marsh.
ReplyDeleteMike, it could be worse: Angel Hernandez could've been behind the plate.
ReplyDeleteI feel like a fool for defending Chip Caray after he & Steve Stone got booted off the Cubs broadcasts a few years ago.
Chip Caray is a tool. He totally wanted the Twins to lose. It was blatantly obvious and unprofessional. What's his grudge?
ReplyDeleteSkip was my hero but Chip is horrible. As a Braves fan, I've had to listen to him for several years and with Sciambi leaving us for ESPN he'll be even more insufferable next year.
ReplyDelete"Fisted." Everything in Chip Caray's world is "fisted." This can be unspeakably awkward in mixed company.
ReplyDeleteAnyone want to bet on whether he and Buck Martinez still think Dustin Pedroia's nickname is El Caballito?
"Rayburn evens the ledger" refers to the fact that the Tigers ended the previous inning on a line-out double play, and now Rayburn just returned the favor.
ReplyDeleteThis guy seems to have a love affair with the Yanks - all we heard was Jeter, Sabbathia, jerseys on trophy wall, and an entire 9th inning of nothing but Rivera
ReplyDeleteChip did it again tonight. The play wasn't as consequential as the Twins-Tigers game, but he called another fly to left a base hit. Actually, I think he just got "Basehi...." out of his pompous pie hole before he corrected himself. Maybe he's looking out of Stu Scott's bad left eye and has trouble with balls hit to LF.
ReplyDeleteChip also blew the final call of the game. When Casilla singled to RF in the 12th, Caray announced "and there won't be a play at the plate" before Clete Thomas charged the ball and... THREW TO THE PLATE! It wasn't a close play, but it's not like the ball was over the outfielder's head and he didn't even go get it. Also, earlier, as the camera was panning over Magglio Ordonez with a bat in his hand in the dugout, he announced he'd "be following Granderson" before correcting that 10 seconds later and saying he'd be following Polanco. Ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteIf Chip's last name was anything except Caray, he would be on the grounds crew for a AA team.
