Your own conclusions are probably right. If Google gets any requests of copyright infringement, they automatically shut the site down. You can then appeal after that.

While you can't copyright a newsworthy event, my hands are tied while being under the umbrella of Google/Blogger. I need to switch to a new server soon, but just don't have the time at the moment.

That's the long and short of it and didn't really feel like posting on it last night. Hopefully it doesn't happen again.
