People In Canada Are Clever

Saturday, January 05, 2008

I know it's just the International Bowl but I've been thoroughly enjoying this team on the call. You've got the two Canadians in Saunders and Flutie and Jesse Palmer and he might be one of the best analysts I've heard in awhile.

Anyway, here's the highlight of the game (and no it's not Ray Rice's 260 and 4 TDs through 3 quarters). Wait for it...Waaaait for it...

I'd love to hear the producer on that one....."Okay, Camera 2 to the Go Rutgers sign.....wait ABORT! ABORT!!!!"

Ground Control To Major Thom?

Friday, January 04, 2008

This is just one of many mistakes in the pantheon of FOX's coverage of this Bowl Season. The Announcing team for the Orange Bowl (sans Alvarez) was great, but the production team needs to go back to the drawing board. We've already seen the band about a million times.....how about that transition from halftime to second half?

Oh no.....somebody in the Band is down! Not your Bread and Butter FOX!!! Look I understand the problem with coming up with a new announcing team every single night for three nights, but this was unspeakable. FOX waits an entire year to bring us the BCS Bowl Games and if you're not up in arms after the last two posts I feel sorry for you as a Sports Fan.

How do things like this happen when you have an entire year to plan? It makes zero sense to me. FOX saw how bad last year went and they made it worse(productionally speaking.....and yes I know that's not a word). Please fix whatever you have to before the BCS Championship Game or you're going to be hammered by the masses.

Vasgersian Not The First To Refer To Schmitt As A Beer Truck

Thursday, January 03, 2008

This upsets me greatly as I thought Matt Vas was the inventor of the Owen Schmitt beer reference, but alas...that is not the case. Apparently Washington Post writer Mike Wise referred to the WVU Fullback as a "Beer Truck" before as well....

It's not like his reputation isn't out there. Schmitt has the rare ability to hold onto the ball -- or deliver punishing blocks -- in heavy traffic.

"He has a forehead made of steel," said ESPN's Craig James.

"He rumbles like a beer truck with a broken parking brake," wrote the Washington Post's Mike Wise.

It didn't matter to Schmitt that he ran for two touchdowns and dropped a punt inside the 20-yard line in the Mountaineers' 55-14 Big East victory on Oct. 6 at Syracuse.

Next practice, he acted like it never happened.
I'm not accusing of stealing the line, but there's one important thing about this blockquote you should know. It's from an article back in October.

WVU's Schmitt bases performance on maximum effort (Pittsburgh Live)

Matt Vasgersian With The Call Of The Bowl Season, Owen Schmitt = Beer Truck

Wednesday, January 02, 2008

In all of my years watching Sports I don't think I've ever heard someone refer to a player as a "Runaway Beer Truck". Thanks to Matt Vasgersian's call of this Owen Schmitt touchdown I can cross it off my list.....

Good times.

Uh oh....the analysts are fighting now.

I didn't know it took bowl game experience to state the obvious. (Via Fairplay)

"One of those "stupid" penalties"- Terry Donahue (Via JJ)

As JJ pointed out....There are smart penalties?

"Owen Schmitt, like a big runaway beer truck" - Matt Vasgersian (Via Mookie and Smitty)

Now THAT'S how you end a broadcast.

Again....if you don't know the rules. Please don't call the game. Doesn't everyone who watches Football know that the refs just don't acknowledge the player when they're calling a timeout?

"I tell you Charles, we've got 10 minutes left in this game."- Thom Brennamen

Thankfully Thom is wrong again. There's only 8 minutes left.

"Just bringing you back to the Sugar Bowl. Better than as 'War and Peace' because it will never end." - Scott Van Pelt (Via The Unreliable Narrator)

Ha....that about sums it up. Bonerama to you all and to all a good night. See you tomorrow for a full day of AA.

New Years Day Live-Blog: The Rose Bowl 2nd Half

21 to 3 Trojans at halftime, and hopefully this thing will get exciting at some point.

USC picks up a quick first down to the TE Davis and that kid is going to be an awesome pro. And he gets another first right after that. Ball at the 50. Incomplete on first down by Booty and Washington picks up nothing on the 2nd down run. Third and long...incomplete. USC will punt...

"I can do without the flips. Kick that kid off the sideline. Don't let him play the rest of the game as far as I'm concerned." - Doug Flutie via False Rumour Monger

Get off Doug Flutie's Lawn!

Illinois comes out throwing........and then.......

TOUCHDOWN ILLINOIS!!!!!!!!!!!! Mendenhall takes it to the house! 79 Yards and somehow we've got a game.

Sorry about that folks.....lost internet there for a second. Juice keeps it on first down for three. WHOOOOO! Mendenhall again goes sprinting down the field and takes it all the way to the USC 22! 55 Yard screen.

Fumble on the FB run!!!!!! Illinois gets it back....whoa. 2nd and 11.....Juice to Willis and he's wide open. ANOTHER FUMBLE!!!!! And it's USC's ball as Willis fumbles into the endzone. Dagger.

Miller is flying around the field today. Stops McKnight for a loss. Incomplete on on second down and it's 3rd and long. Booty to Johnson and he picks up the first down. A holding penalty makes it 1st Down and 20......

McKnight on the lateral picks it up on the bounce! He's gone!!! No......Davis hunts him down!!! Wow....that dude is fast. There's a replay to see if it was a lateral but that's going to stand. USC ball at the Illinois 23. Incomplete on 1st down and Washington gets a few on second down.

PICK! No....pass interference. First down USC.

TOUCHDOWN USC!!! Booty to Davis and he was wide open.

28-10 USC.

Does USC get a taunting penalty every single TD? Good lord. Kickoff from the 15 and the Kicker destroys it. All the way to the goal line.

And Juice is picked off on first down.....that's your game folks. McKnight down the sideline for a first down and Booty follows it up with a 30 yarder to the Fullback Havili. Booty to Davis for 8 yards and then.....

TOUCHDOWN USC!!! McKnight up the middle untouched.

35-10 Trojans.

Aaaaaand the USC sucking-up for next season starts already. Happy 2008, everyone!- Willmott

Greaaaaat. I can't wait.

Mendenhall has the Illini moving again on the option and into USC territory. Can someone say too little too late? ANOTHER ILLINOIS FUMBLE!!! You have to be getting me. Cumberland one the cough up this time.

McKnight picks up nine on first down and he's going to be amazing. Dammit....the USC hype has already made it's way to this site.

"Here's one for you Kirk, I know how you like those dancing shows."- Brent Musburger

"Part of the reason we enjoy this game every year is the sunset."- Brent Musburger

Ummmm.....okay. That's the third quarter folks. USC is driving....again.

TOUCHDOWN USC.....Booty to Ausberry.....

42-10.

Sorry for the delay....stepped away to post the Sugar Bowl open thread. I'm pretty sure I didn't miss anything though.

Oooooh silver helmets for the Warriors tonight. Pretty. Illinois is driving but Juice Williams is trying to give it back to the Trojans.

Okay who the hell is Bonerama?

TOUCHDOWN USC......49-10, and another celebration flag.

This game just won't end.....

TOUCHDOWN ILLINOIS.....McGee to Benn.....

49-17.

"McGee comes in and throws a seed to.....a seem to Benn."- Kirk Herbstreit

"And Pete Carrol could be the best all-around coach in any league."- Brent Musburger

Right....a coach that doesn't win a National Championship is the best in both College and Pro, Brent.

"I've said you're the greatest filler for a blowout I've ever worked with."- Brent Musburger to Kirk Herbstreit

Awww.....now let's go watch the sunset together.

And that's your game. A blowout as expected but fun none the less. 49-17 Trojans and they win their 4,000th Rose Bowl.

New Years Day Bowl Game(s) Open Thread

Sorry for being a little late to the party, but Happy New Year everyone. I'm just going with the standard Pammy look today and adding quotes as they come in. Enjoy all of the games today and email me at AwfulAnnouncing@Gmail.com if you come across anything interesting.

I'll put some other goodness up throughout the day as I come across it.

"And he runs in the end zone for a first down... and a touchdown!"- Sean McDonough (Via Fred)

"He is not known for running backwards." - Pat Summerall on Darren McFadden (Via Fairplay)

"The reason Michigan went in to the hurry up offense with about 2:30 left was because they had no timeouts left. They had used all their timeouts in the first half."- Todd Blackledge

It was the first half when he said this, so did he mean the first half of the first half, AKA the first quarter? (Via mattycb8)

"I don't think Al Gore.....Al Gore, listen to me. Al GROH got any satisfaction out of this conversation."- Verne Lundquist

"We have to finish the job here if we wanna have a happy ending."- UVA Coach Al Groh (Via Matt)

"You know, I did Larry Fitzgerald when he was a young redshirt freshman at Pittsburgh."- Gary Danielson (Via Fairplay)

TMI Gary....TMI!

"A little bit tongue cheek here Brent...er Verne."- Gary Danielson

He hasn't worked with anyone else in two years who does he think he's talking to?

"Okay Jeanne, Happy Birth....Happy New Year to you too."- Pat Summerall

AA BULLETIN: LIVE-BLOG OF THE ROSE BOWL COMING AT 4:30PM

FYI, Here were/are my picks for today. I'm 11-8-2 after a debacle of a day yesterday.

Tenn -2.5 (W)
Ark +4 (L)
Mich +10.5
UVA +6
USC -14
Hawaii +8

"He's (Tebow) not going to party, he's going to do charitable work with kids...."- Holly Rowe
Holly I can see Todd doing something like that while you and I go to Daytona."- Mike Patrick

God Mike Patrick is so damn random. Way to ruin a heartfelt piece about Tebow from Holly.

From Earlier via reader Skip.....

"Any time you're in a big football game, turnovers are costly." - Chris Spielman (thanks Captain Obvious)

(Tossing to the Flomax halftime report) "Rece Davis will provide us with a steady stream of information."- Sean McDonough

Hilarious.

"You hear people say if it's too good to be true it ISN'T, well, Tebow is the real deal." - Mike Patrick (Via Gibbon Jockey)

Ha...what does that even mean?

"Of course Hart has that shield in there he doesn't have to worry about someone sticking his finger in his eye through there either."- Mike Patrick

Would be a great comment if the cameraman didn't show Hart on the sidelines taking off his helmet which had no shield on it.

Lou Holtz Gets The Last Post Of The Year

Monday, December 31, 2007

How much does ESPN want you to watch the Rose Bowl? This much....

I've seen possibly 400 ads regarding the Rose Bowl these past two weeks. There were ads in magazines, promos during every Bowl Game on ESPN, and Brent Musburger was trying to get me to watch the game in my dreams (or nightmares). But nothing....NOTHING I tell you....will get me more hyped for a game than a Lou Holtz pep talk.

Have a great New Years Eve everyone, stay safe and I'll see you here tomorrow for a truly great day of action. You never know what will happen.

Joe Paterno "Casket" Yeller Found

Saturday, December 29, 2007

I'm so glad this douchebag got booed when he made the comments I mentioned the other day. This "cheerleader" was trying to get the crowd riled up when he thought it would be a good idea to mention that Joe Paterno was on his death bed....

People like this should be banned from ever touching a microphone.

"Did a nice job and really BANGED it!"- Mike Patrick

I never want to hear Mike Patrick use that word like that ever again.

"He actually ran the stairs with TJ Duckett a great NFL player."- Holly Rowe

Really?

"And Michigan leads Boston College, 7-0."- Mike Patrick (Via Rick James Bible Owner)

During the ESPN Bowl Rundown, the first words from Lou Holtz concerning the Champs Bowl- 'It's 80 degrees and not a breath of fresh air." (Via Gibbon Jockey)

I'm really upset that Lou isn't doing a pep talk for any of these games. That's a travesty.

"Collander on the carry."- Mike Patrick

It's CALendar.....like well a CALendar.

"The offensive line for BC was just over on the sideline after that last punt getting absolutely hammered...(too long of a pause)...by the BC coaching staff."- Holly Rowe (Via Time For 11)

How many Holly Rowe reports are they going to do in the first half? I think were at 6 now....the last one even included a Brett Favre impression.

"The blow was delivered a little lower."- Mike Patrick

"You mentioned both those picks that Ryan threw. Both coming from Jamie Silva."- Rece Davis

Unless MSU and BC made a trade that's physically impossible Rece.

"They came from ahead to lose."- Brad Sham

"He had it on the tip."- Mike Patrick

"You have an I-Pod and an I-Phone?"- Todd Blackledge
"Anything with an I in it I have it. If they come out with an I-Car I'm buying it."- Mike Patrick
"Do you have Britney Spears on that I-Pod?"- Todd Blackledge
"No.............although I hear she might be renting out that double wide to a family member."- Mike Patrick

WINNER! Video in 15.

"A Quarterback has to keep his hands in and ride that center."- Todd Blackledge (Via Gibbon Jockey)

"I like the chunky kickers we have in this game." - Mike Mayock (Via alienaub)

"Now you know why his teammates call him 'Sweet Pea'." - Charles Davis
"He's got a couple of nicknames. Donny Avery called him a white Michael Vick." - Mike Mayock
"I think Sweet Pea is a little safer." - Brad Sham
(Via alienaub)

Are you serious??? The production one had to be cringing at that one.

"He smelled sack and he got sack"- Chris Spielman (Via Fairplay)

"You noticed something between the two teams Chris. What a dichotomy, if you know what that means, between the two teams."- Rob Stone to Chris Spielman

I Told You Bowl Season Didn't Start Until The Crazy Came (Here It Comes Again)

It's one thing to trash talk the opposing team if you're a player. It's another thing to trash talk the other team's coach if you're a player. It's even another thing to trash talk the other team's coach by saying he needs a casket......and you're a cheerleader......

Paterno turned 81 last week. Penn State faces A&M Saturday night in the Alamo Bowl.

The schools held pep rallies Thursday night in San Antonio, and one A&M yell leader told the crowd that Paterno was "on his death bed" and "someone needs to find him a casket."

The remarks drew boos from the crowd. Some A&M and Penn State fans said the remarks were offensive and inappropriate.
Woooooo! I'm fired up for the Alamo Bowl now! Let's kill people!!! Wait, what?

Only "some" fans found the comments offensive? I'd like to see the people who actually cheered that crap.

Aggie's Paterno 'Needs Casket' Comment Prompts Outrage (WGAL.com)

P.S.- Oh and the lovely lady above was not the culprit nor do I know if she is actually a cheerleader.

Your Post Season Pammy Standings

We've only got six entries so far but that will change later in the week. Thanks a ton to the people that keep sending these in. Paul Maguire has the early line on the Post Season title, but I'm sure our regular season winner Mr. Danielson will have something to say about it before we're done.
