I'd been looking for this clip all morning, and thanks to reader AS, it has been found! Last night during a Sports Center Right Now segment, John Saunders brought up the Barry Bonds documents that were released yesterday. Well Saunders threw it back to Mike Patrick, who was calling the Duke-Clemson game, and being one who's not shy about expressing his opinion (see: Spears, Britney), Patrick decided to chime in.
Wow. He's not playing around, is he? Just send that f'er right to jail! My favorite part though are the reactions from the rest of his team. Jay Bilas doesn't even know what to say, and then Heather Cox says she "doesn't know how to follow that." You know you've said something crazy if you render your entire crew silent.

I still think it's a bad idea to joke about guns, but I have to say that Mike Patrick's line, during the second quarter of the Cap One Bowl, cracked me the hell up. The Bulldogs were struggling to put together drives, and after a third down penalty, Mr. Britney Spears had this to say. Via Detroit Free Press' live-blog of the game....
7:07: Michigan State’s defense looks as good as it has all season. A great showing on that last drive. Georgia managed only three yards on that possession. Between Stafford, Moreno, Green and Mohamed Massaquoi, Georgia should be doing a lot more on offense than they’ve shown thus far. He's obviously been planning that one for days, and the uncomfortable silence that followed probably didn't make him feel too good, but it still got a spit take out of me. I can't seem to find the video at the moment, so if anyone has it....please send it along and I'll throw it up.
ABC’s Mike Patrick just said that Georgia, “is pulling a Plaxico (Burress), they just keep shooting themselves.” Don’t know if we’ll get a better quote all day. I wonder how long he has been preparing that one.

When Todd Blackledge first starting doing his "Taste of the Town" segment during games he called with Mike Patrick, I thought the gimmick had been done so many times on air that people would just tune the spots out. Well it looks as if it's had just the opposite effect, and people across the country have been asking me what game he's calling each week so they can tune in. The Boston Globe even got a hold of him for an interview before the BC-Notre Dame game on Saturday, and he seems just as surprised at the response....
He [Blackledge] said he is stunned at the level of interest the segment has generated.I'm all for breaking into the game for a few segments, as long as they are relevant to either the Colleges or the teams on the field. Blackledge actually makes the segments pretty fun and has even got some funny one-liners out of Mike Patrick. Something I previously thought to be impossible. If people continue to respond like they have to them....keep them coming.
"The restaurant thing was an idea I had last summer," he said. "We had a seminar up in Bristol [Conn., at ESPN's headquarters] and they brought everybody in from college football. They were challenging us to come up with new ideas and not be afraid to try something different. I came out of that meeting and I told my producer Bo Garrett that I'd been sitting on it for a few years and it was something I'd like to try.
"I love to eat and I love a lot of these small, college towns I go to. I didn't want to do chain restaurants but some place that is indigenous to the place that I'm at that represents that school and campus. I try to find something with a connection to the university, to the football team, to the reason I'm there in the first place, which is the game.
"We tried it last year. We were in Clemson, S.C., and we did it from a place called Mac's Drive-In and the thing just took off. It was popular. It got to the point to where about midway through last season, everywhere I went, anybody who recognized me, nobody asked me about football anymore. It was, 'Where are you eating this week?' Or, 'The place you ate last week, was it really as good as it looked?' It's really kind of taken on a life of its own."

You may have already seen this on Deadspin's Morning Video Wake Up Call, which I'm putting together each morning, but I thought it deserved a spot here. Georgia player Matt Cerione struck out and he was none too happy with the call as ESPN's cameras followed him into the dugout (:37 secs)....
Too funny. Anytime you surprise Mr. Britney Spears you've done well in my book. Bravo Mr. Cerione.

Mike Patrick continues to blow my mind every single broadcast. This time it happened only 10 seconds in. Wait for it...waiiiiit for it...
The best part is how the producer feeds him the line and he actually thanks him. Oh and I love those 80s prescription automatic tint glasses as well. Nice touch Mike!
(Be sure to check out Mister Irrelevant's post on Douchebag Smurf as well.)
Oh and just for the hell of it.....I'm pretty sure Ron Pawlus played Football for Notre Dame in the 90s, but I could be wrong....

It's been awhile since we've heard the dulcet tones of one Richard J. Vitale and he couldn't be coming back at a better time. You all know he's on the call for tonight's Duke-UNC game with the "Devil Lover" Mike Patrick, and AA's going to be open threading for the first time in CBB this year.
I'm going to be the tracking quotes, and bringing back the "The Twenty Or So Things On Dickie V's Mind That Have Nothing To Do With College Basketball Or The Game He's Calling" for tonight's game. If you're around feel free to play along starting at 9pm. I'll see you then!
Update: I'm blacked out so if anyone wants to add some comments I'd appreciate it.

The Champs Sports Bowl was coming to an end when Mike Patrick and Todd Blackledge starting chatting about I-Pods and I-Phones (I have no idea why). Well Blackledge decide to ask Patrick if he had Britney Spears on his I-Pod (in reference to Patrick's questioning of the Pop Star early in the year).
Pretty damn funny and it should have stopped there....but of course Mr. Patrick couldn't leave it alone.....
"Do you have Britney Spears on your I-Pod too?"- Todd Blackledge
"No....No.....Fortunately...............She may have lent out the Double Wide. To another family member (giggles uncontrollably)"- Mike Patrick
Who brought jokes? Mike Patrick brought jokes! Seriously....it's a bit old, and Jeff Foxworthy wants his material back.
Mike Patrick Has More Important Things On His Mind (Awful Announcing)
P.S.- I take more pride in that photo than I do the video. Photoshopping a 70s Len Elmore and Mike Patrick getting yelled at by Jamie Lynn while her sister drags her away......that's talent folks!

Usually when I wake up and make the almost 2 hour trek into work I flip through the emails on my phone. Today was different as there were a good 10 or so with the subject "Mike Patrick"....I wondered what goofy thing he did today. The Britney Spears' Incident was something goofy and random, and it was fun to make fun of him for being so random. I couldn't wait to read what he did this time, but it wasn't goofy and random.
Speaking about Virginia Tech's trip to LSU earlier in the year Mike Patrick had this to say about the game.....
"Virginia Tech went to LSU and got murdered."- Mike Patrick
Now I know when you're in the moment sometimes you say things you really shouldn't, but comments like this are inexcusable. How many Tech fans do you think were listening at the moment and thought back to April? Probably tens of thousands. I know some of you are going to say that people are too sensitive and that there has to be a moratorium on things of this nature, but I'm saying there shouldn't be.
Just inexcusable to me.
(Thanks to Roger and all of the other Tech fans who expressed their feelings.)

This is more than likely going to win The Pammy Award for the
week Millenium, and it was so ridiculous that it needed its own spot.
Georgia and Alabama are in overtime and GA has the ball with a chance to win. So Mike Patrick says to Todd Blackledge that he has an important question. He wants to know about someone. Who could it be in an overtime game? Ex-Bulldog Hershel Walker??? Joe Namath's stint in rehab??? No it was someone more important than them......
I'll let reader Dave explain....
In OVERTIME, Patrick says to Todd Blackledge "I've got an important question."
Blackledge: "Go ahead."
Patrick: "What's Britney doing with her life?"
Blackledge: "Britney who?"
Patrick: "Britney Spears. What's she doing with her career?"
Blackledge: "Why do we care at this point? Is she here?"
Ball is snapped immediately following this exchange and Georgia scores WINNING TD --- again in OVERTIME.
Yep, last play of an overtime game and Mike Patrick, unprovoked mind you, wants to know about Britney Spears' Career. Riiiiiiight.
And thanks to Anon here's the video.......

Someone alerted me to the fact that Joe Theismann was calling the Redskins game this past Saturday with Mike Patrick. I missed the original airing but Comcast helped me out and provided the replay on Sunday. As a commenter noted, Mike Patrick called Jason Campbell ex-Redskin QB Doug Williams about 8 times in the first quarter. But that's not nearly the best part of the broadcast.
Mister Irrelevant found this clip of Patrick telling the audience that our old pal Joe, likes to "munch on the box"....
"Hey, Hey, Hey." What the clip missed was when Joe Theismann tried to detail exactly how he munched the box, and proclaimed this..."You munch the box because you want to score. And you have to score to win the game."

This is a question posed to those lurkers on the site. You know who you are....the announcers and media that read everyday. I need your opinion, and don't worry....you can protect your identity through anonymous commenting.
Here's the scenario: In the Sweet Sixteen Open Thread I noted that Jay Bilas said this line....
"Jamaal Tatum.....THE GUTS OF A BURGLAR!!!"
Well in my travels through the Women's Tournament I came across this line from lead Play by Play man Mike Patrick.
The Question: Is that stealing, or is this a common phrase I've never heard? And if it is stealing, and was done to you how would you feel?
UPDATE: Okay.....so I guess it's not that big of a deal. If that phrase is more common than I thought....well that's different. It's a pretty cheesy line.
