Texas A&M at Kansas Live Blog - second half

Saturday, February 03, 2007

Watching the halftime highlights, I'm going to predict that Texas falls out of the top 25 and Southern Illinois gets in after pounding Wichita State in their own building.

Those Game Day cretins need to get their chairs off of my nice blue floor.

What the Christ? Herm Edwards is dressed like an extra from a boxing film from 1936. That was just some strange, strange fashion sense.

10:20

Game back on.

With all of the upsets in the top 5, either of these teams gets a great chance to move up.

10:44

57-49 for Kansas. Jones and K-man are coming in to try to match up with KU's big lineup, but both are in foul trouble.

Nonetheless, Carter nails a three and the margin is down to five and Self calls a T.O.

There's Mario Chalmers' dad behind Self in the huddle. He looks like jazz legend Charles Mingus. Trust me on this.

Rush dongs a wide-open shot.... not good. These A&M kids are scrappin'.

Chaka Kaun missing shots - urg.

I'd pay money to listen to Kaun and A&M's K-guy trash-talking each other with Slavic accents.

Robinson scores again, 38-30. The Allen crowd is energized again.

Kirk hits a three for A&M - I like the way A&M is playing - no panic, just business as usual.

10:23

Scoring has picked up! K-man both travels and double-dribbles, so that would be a turnover.

Wright is on pace to graduate in three years? Amazing. And he's already said he'll stay until he graduates, so I hope that's true. I had no idea he was so smart (majoring in Comms, which is not bad for a scholarship athlete).

Chalmers scores - he has 8 on 4-4 shooting, and the score is 42-35 in KU's favor.

10:26

Robinson gets decked by his own man and turns the ball over. Uh-oops.

A&M asst. coach Albert Johnson is overcoming a nasty-sounding disease to be on this road trip. Sounds awful. Good for him to battle through that.

Goaltending on Davis, so Rush gets the 2 pts. He needs to get to the rim like that more often, good things tend to happen.

KU's quick hands are starting to take a toll. Kaun yips the short shot, but Arthur cleans up the mess.

Fans are getting louder as KU goes up by 9. Carter immediately cuts it to 6.

10:30

K-man gets his third foul. Not to wish ill on a fierce competitor, but I'm hoping someone fouls out. I've been wanting to see the Kansas faithful "wave the wheat" for some time now.

Freshman Collins has 12 for KU - he's so tough in the lane, I'm really looking forward to watching his career. Damn, he just nailed a three while I was typing that. And then committed a foul. freshmen....

Uh oh, Herm Edwards' wife just got the news that Erin Andrews is coming up to interview her husband. She does NOT look happy.

Herm goes defensive and conservative on his predictions for the game. Shades of football season. I swear I feel like I stumbled into a live Andy Capp cartoon here. That is a fucked up hat.

10:40

Darnell Jackson gets a little love on a wide-open dunk for Kansas 55-46.

Rush with the airball - yikes, that was ugly.

Damn, Jackson is playing like a man possessed. Good series for him. Love to see that from a bench player.

A&M is starting to settle for the outside shot. Bad idea. But Kansas has a lot of beef inside with Jackson and Kaun - they might not have much of a choice.

10:48

Wright runs the floor incredibly for a 6-8 guy. Collins nails another three to near 20 points on the night. Only at a school like Kansas could this guy be a bench player.

Kaun knocks the ball to Sloan, but A&M fails to score and KU continues to clean the glass.

Vitale is shouting. Thought I should mention that.

Both teams shooting 44% overall, but several of KU's shots have been Collins 3's, so the margin is still 6 in KU's favor.

10:52

Steal by Law and he avoids the traveling call as he falls to the court. This is shaping up to be a good final five minutes, as the Aggies are still battling hard.

Carter blows a real good look. KU gets the ball back and slows it down.

10:58

Irvin says "Let me tell you what will win this game. Matchups, and deszjyer!". What????????? Nice promo.

Kaun bricks a free-throw. He is so inconsistent. In the Oklahoma State win, he was a monster.

It's a 4 point game! Law scores!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH! My DVR just jumped to record "House" reruns. Who the hell is monkeying with my remote?

11:00

KU steals it, walks it up the court, score is still 64-58.

Jones playing tough for the Aggies despite having 4 fouls. He gets them the ball back.

Law gets the bucket and foul! What a heady play.

This live blog sponsored by Mylanta! The margin is 3 points, and A&M has the momentum. Still waiting for the Allen Fieldhouse faithful to get the REAL NOISE going!

11:02

Pompey and Kaun are knocking each other around. Not a bad idea to put Kaun on the line when you're this close. He's got 2 points and is 0-1 on Free Throws.

He misses AGAIN!!!!

Jones misses a three, but K-man gets the rebound and the foul. Excellent play.

11:04

If he makes this free throw, K-man ties the game with 1:00 to go. He makes it.

We have a ball game!

Nice, nice feed from Robinson to Wright, and he does the Plasticman thing with those long arms of his and gets the finger roll to fall.

44.3 seconds left, and KU up by 2.

11:06

Wright knocks it away from Law, but it goes out of bounds and stays with the Aggies.

Law hits the THREE!!! A&M up 67-66. Incredible comeback!

20.5 seconds left. This is going to be on the guards for KU. Can they get it up court against the inevitable pressure? I say take it at 'em and hope for the foul - a two will win it.

11:09

Collins, a true freshman, is on the floor for KU. Too many players on the floor! That was close, they barely got Jackson off the court on time to avoid the penalty.

Oh no. Shot too soon, and missed! A&M gets the ball with 5 secs and a free throw to go.

Made one. A&M 68-66.

Made two. KU needs the three to tie.

11:11

This is tense. They'll trot out the guards, who are pretty decent from behind the arc. But I think A&M is well-coached enough to keep anyone from getting an open look.

Chalmers can't make the three, and the Aggies win.

I'd like to take you back to this moment:

9:20

Oh, Dan Shulman - why did you have to say "A&M has NEVER beat Kansas". You dirty jinxer.

I hear some KU fans booing, and that pisses me off. These guys played a clean game and won it. I give them their due respect.

And Billy Gillespie is rewarded with the Erin Andrews interview to finish the game.

Erin says "he's shaking!" It's not the win, it's you, Erin.

A&M takes over sole possession of first place in the Big 12 and will probably move into the top 5 because of the upsets this week. Big ups to the new kids on the block. Looking forward to reversing the result, maybe in the Big 12 tournament?

Tune in and see!

Kansas (#6) vs Texas A&M (#10) Live Blog

OK! Some of you may have read my ode to Virginia's new JPJ Arena, but I was raised in this beautiful old barn they call Allen Field House, and it will be rockin' tonight!

Hopefully the student section can drown out Vitale.

Apparently, if you want your kid to be a kick-ass basketball player, name him Acie. A&M has an Acie Law, and I remember Acie Earl with the high-top fade playing for Iowa back in the early 90's, as well. I have never known a non-basketball-playing Acie.

9:00 Building rockin' for tip, and it goes to the Aggies. God I love the barrage of noise the students make. Takes me right back.

first shot by A&M is a missed three, out of bounds to KU. Wright makes a pass that was nice in theory, faulty in execution.

Josh Carter nails a three to take the lead after KU gets a nice transition layup from Chalmers.

Kaaayyyy - YOU YOU!

"If they play their best, they're as good as anyone in the country." Why do I feel like that's an epitaph for the season? Too many early losses in the NCAAs in the Self era.

Apparently Gillespie is like a rock star in College Station. Wow.... that must be a heady experience.

9:10

Wow, very little scoring, as I expected. Since Gillespie was a Self assistant at Illinois and Tulsa, he runs almost the exact same system. The D is going to be some of the best you've ever seen.

KU steal and a missed layup - that was a crap sandwich - lots of missed buckets so far.

SLAM! from Wright. Thank god he kept it simple - he's been missing windmills and three-sixties recently - it's embarassing.

9:14

Law gets a smooth shot to make it 7-6, but Chalmers hits another one - he's already 3-3 for 6 points because he takes the easy shots and makes them. It'll win you games. Good thing Kansas had a cushy Assistant Coaching position open for Mario's dad.

Recruiting-it's tough!

9:16

Every kiss begins with Kaye. Diamonds for a kiss. What the hell do I have to buy her to get a beejer?

9:18

Awwww...yeah. As soon as I type the word "beejer", the honeyed tones of Erin Andrews come across the speakers.

Billy Gillespie's doing "jazz hands" on the sideline. Wonder what play that is?

Nice shot of Self, Gillespie, and Roberts of St. Johns on the bench together. Old photo.

Beautiful passing from A&M, they're up by three 11-8.

9:20

Oh, Dan Shulman - why did you have to say "A&M has NEVER beat Kansas". You dirty jinxer.

Sherron Collins hits a three to tie it - he's amazing. He's built like a linebacker but glides the court completely under control. For a muscle-bound guy like that to be a point guard is unusual.

You can tell this is a big game - we get a new commercial break every three minutes.

9:24

Hmm.. the Duke/NC game is coming up. I propose that Sam T. and I do dueling live-blogs on that one.

Two horrible shots by A&M, but one of them was probably a foul on Kansas.

Yikes - horrible passes by Kansas. If it keeps up this way, A&M has the advantage. I think Self is going to peel paint off the locker-room walls at halftime.

Note: Almost ALL of A&Ms players are from Texas. Gillespie must have done an incredible job of recruiting the state.

9:26

Russ Rob gets free on a screen and hits the three.

Lots of upsets this week - something like 10 ranked teams got beat. The one to watch in my opinion was the K-State/Texas upset. We all knew Bob Huggins would right the ship quickly at K-State. The question is, can he stay sober and keep his recruits from pulling knives on people.

9:30

Davis makes a nice move and scores, it's KU 16- A&M 15.

Wow, Erin tells us some of these players were here for an 0-12 conference season. Quite the impressive turnaround.

Wow, Durant scored 32 for Texas and they still lost. Hope he enjoys playing in Memphis next year.

Wow, the ad for Maxyderm was playing straight-up porn soundtrack music. How did that sneak into the ad-lineup?

9:33

OK, chill-bump moment for the Manning footage. I was a freshman in '88, so that was a defining moment of my sporting life.

Darrell Arthur ties it up again. He's good but inexperienced.

Lots of lead changes, but I'm still waiting for the atmosphere to get as raucous as it can be. I don't think the students are taking it as seriously as they could - they're used to beating inferior A&M teams, and there's no natural rivalry there.

9:36

Earl shoots a three with 2 seconds on the shot clock. That dude is money. It's A&M 23, Kansas 20.

Rush finally scores for KU!

Kavaliauskus - I plan not to type that again, so if I say "K scores" you'll know what I mean.

Pompey blocks the shit out of Rush's shot.

9:40

Chalmers decked on a steal. I love it when tough teams play each other......

Sorry, watching Eriin talk about things. Wonderful things.

What was I talking about?

9:42

Cool! Wayne Simien's parents still come to games! He's been in the NBA with the Heat for two seasons. I like that - they're true Jayhawk parents.

Rush nails a three off the screen - 27-26 for KU

Nice block by Wright leads to a shot-clock violation. Lots of contact inside!

Nice hip-hop montage of one of America's whitest Universities.

9:46

I'm glad they're showing some of the hotties of Kansas. They usually pan across the hillbilly section of the crowd during a national game.

Collins is not afraid of the lane - he was a WR in high school. Nice layup.

A&M parlays a trap into a steal - nice D.

Cool! Law's jersey actually says "Law IV" Never seen the roman numerals on a jersey before.

Shit, Self gets a T. And "bullshit", a substance Kansas kids are intimately familiar with, resounds throughout the arena.

9:50

A&M gets a shot-clock violation. We've seen all kinds of turnovers that are the result of the spectacular defense being played.

30-all.

Hold the phone!!! Texas Pan-Am beat New Jersey Tech??? Why was this game not on television?

Wright and Jackson - a great combination of big men in for Kansas. Wright is all shake and bake and miss the shot, and Jackson just lurks and gets fouled on the put-back. I like that pairing.

9:54

Awesome, BAYBEE!! Dick Vitale from 1981! What the hell happened to his voice? Eeesh, now he's mackin' on some farm girls.

Steal by Wright. Kansas holds for the last shot. Collins loses the ball, but K steps on the end-line when he grabs the rebound.

With 3.6, KU ready to put the ball in-bounds.

Rush's three attempt gets stuck in the rim! OUTSTANDING!!!! I really enjoyed that. Collins has 8 points, and KU is up 35-30 at the half. Intense first half, but I'm hoping for even more in the second half.

Bill Self is flirting with Erin - he gave her a little wink and smile with the eye contact there.

Desmond Doesn't Do His Homework

Thursday, December 21, 2006

I got this email from John V. yesterday, and it hurt me to the core. Desmond Howard is our favorite college player ever. Hands down. So you can understand why I was hesitant to post it.....um, that was until I found the video.

From John V: Last night, before the game, they asked the studio guys to pick the pre-New Year's game they were most looking forward to. Desmond Howard selects the Holiday Bowl, and how much he is looking forward to the Cal/Texas game. He then launches into an analysis of how Colt McCoy will fare against the Cal defense. That's all well and good, except for the fact that Cal is playing Texas A&M. None of the other guys in the studio bothered to correct him.

Desmond Howard has been consistently horrible, but this takes it to a new low.

Why Desmond!?!?!?!?! WHY!!!!!!!?????? No, you can't be an Awful Announcer! I refuse to accept it. This never happened.

Update: Apparently I'm slow.....The 12th Manchild already has Howard's Apology from the Bud Hot Seat. I guess it's an apology....Howard says he "mis-spoke" when saying Texas instead of Texas A&M.

Pay no mind that you even brought up Texas QB Colt McCoy, Desi. You just mis-spoke....that's all you did....let's forget this ever happened. Right? Right. Just in case.......everyone please look at this pen.
