SI Comes Out With Weirdest Cover Ever

When I went to the mailbox today I certainly wasn't expecting to find this....

Not only is it a cartoon, but it's of the Tampa Bay Rays. SI just blew my mind. I also think Carl Crawford is punching through Derek Jeter. It's not everday that you see America's most popular and most respected Sports Magazine in comic book form.

  1. I like the cover: A little weird, yes, but I like it that SI mixed it up and it is a cool design (the top with the three other stories blends in nicely). However, we all know about the SI jinx, and the Rays will now fall to last place while the Yankees will rise again and take the Wild Card or Division.

  2. Also, they have Crawford wearing a home Rays jersey in Yankee Stadium, while Jeter is wearing a road-gray Yankees jersey -- with his name on the back. What a travesty.

Though the Batman logo in the outfield is a nice touch.

  3. I honestly thought I'd gotten Sports Illustrated for Kids by mistake. Seriously, I had to flip around inside to make sure they weren't any trading cards inside.

    ...because it's a Bizarro cover.

It's Bizarro Baseball. Why wouldn't they have the home and road uniforms swapped?

  8. I guess in Bizarro Baseball Carl Crawford isn't subjected to random drug testing.

  10. In Bizarro AA, LeBron hits clutch shots, Pam Ward wins a Sports Emmy, and SS would slang Joe's D.

  11. I dig the cover. Very Pulp Art. Didn't have to beef up Crawford though. Now if they can ditch some of the ads, change a couple writers and dump some of the headline sports stories that everyone sort of learns through Sports Center right after it happens then we'd have something.

  12. When I saw this I wondered if this sets a new precedent for SI. I don't recall any other SI cover that wasn't a photo of an athlete/model/stadium/etc.

  14. I like it. Reminds me of some of the game day giveaways when I was a kid. Seems like it should come with a pack of Mother's glossy baseball cards. And of course frosted animal crackers.

  15. I'd like to thank this post for ruining the experience of finding the cover on my own and being just as amazed. Thanks.
