Matt Vasgersian Would Like A "Duck Fart" Please

Who knew that "duck fart" was an actual term in Baseball? Well Matt Vasgersian did during the bottom of the 14th as the Padres sent in pitcher Josh Banks to pinch hit in the tie game. Listen at around the 1:00 mark....

Duck Fart- "A softly hit ball that goes over the infielders and lands in the outfield for a hit. Originally called a "duck fart" because it was assumed that a duck's feathers would make its farts as soft (or quiet) as the hit. Changed to a "snort" for use in polite company."

Vasgersian has been involved in some ridiculously long games this year, so he deserves a pass if he says anything crazy, but the fact that's an actual Baseball term blew my mind. You learn something new everyday.

(Thanks to JG for the tip)

  2. A Texas Leaguer is a pop-up that falls JUST behind one player and JUST in front of another. I think it's implied to have a higher trajectory than a 'duck fart'. Personally, I like using "humpback liner" instead of 'duck fart.'

  3. I could go schoolyard and say that Vasgersian, himself, is a duck fart, but I won't.

  5. It is an actual term. Duck snort is the cleaned-up version.

  6. I had always heard it the Hawk Harrelson 'duck snort' way, myself.

Side note: I'm watching the Cubs game (as much Len Kasper as I can stomach). When did Superstation WGN become "WGN America"? Yesterday? That's not the best logo, either.

  7. That conversation sounds so wrong if you don't know what a duck fart/snort is in baseball terms.

  8. theyre all one in the same: duck fart/snort; texas leaguer; flare; dying quail;hump back liner; fisted liner; etc.

  9. Hawk used to say "duck snort", but now (maybe in the last year or so) he has taken to calling them "duck farts".

  10. I don't know who the color guy is, but his 'That sounds nice' was freegan sweet...

I thought a Texas League double was basically a pop fly, barely fair, out of reach of a corner infielder and a corner outfielder...

That new WGN logo is VERY creepy...I couldn't read the text (on a 27" set)...I thought it might be a tie-in to a summer movie...Am I watching TV, or is it WATCHING ME???

    *shudder*

  11. Bert Blyleven (Twins) used to say until the producers told him to stop using the term. Bert said is it French for flare, and is spelled Duquephart, but pronounced Duck Fart.

  12. unless your spelling is wrong "duquephart" there is no such commonly acknowledged word in french.

The words for flare in french are:
    1. godet
    2. signal lumineux
    3. dlater

So I'd say the dutch boy is wrong.
