U.S. Open Final Round Open Thread

Well NBC seems ready for Tiger's round as they break out the Rage Against The Machine...

WOOOOOO! I'm ready for some f'ing Golf!!! I like Rage as much as the next person, but I don't know if a Golf Major is the place for it. Tiger is on the course though and I'm sure the rage is kicking in after this tee shot and subsequent double bogey on the first...

He has since followed with a bogey on two and he's not looking good at all early on. I guess all of the NBC comparisons that NBC made between Tiger and Big Brown before his round might be coming to fruition. No matter how annoying they were.

And Tiger is back in a three way tie for the lead after the 10th. It's he, Westwood and Mediate all at one under. Now it's getting interesting. And he has the lead after the 11th and the crowd comes alive.

Running Quotes:

“More Sheppards Pie, Mr. Westwood?”- Bob Costas on Lee Westwood’s insistence of bringing an English chef to America for the Open

“How I Play Golf by Tiger Woods and after you’ve poured through this I suggest you pick up How I Compose A Symphony by Ludwig Von Beethoven and you’ll have exactly the same chance as achieving the standard of the author.”- Bob Costas on Tiger Woods book

"Look at him hack at that. I've never seen him play a hole like this in his whole career."- Johnny Miller during Tiger Woods' double bogey adventure on hole one.

"Tiger sounding more like an NFL Lineman in the trenches than he is a Golfer today."- Dan Hicks

"Els can't seem to mount anything today."- Roger Maltbie (Via Mal)

"This week Karlsson is 8-under on the back and 4-over on the front."- Dan Hicks

This just after he announces that he just birdied to go to +2. Math class is hard, huh, Dan? (Via Mal)

"And there we have it. Tiger Woods on the prowl."- Dan Hicks (I wonder how many times that quip has been used?)

"Tiger's putting the heat on him and he's melting."- Johnny Miller

"I think it's very important that he [Woods] does make birdie......You know as they say about the lesser team, you let them hand around and they'll make a three on you at the buzzer."- Curtis Strange

"This is like watching the last laps of a NASCAR event and the car has a flat tire".- Johnny Miller (Via Mal)

  1. Maltbie said earlier that "Els can't seem to mount anything today".

I think you mean "hole" >.>

  3. The Golf Digest Challenge that aired before NBC's Open coverage was pretty interesting. The clip of Timberlake comparing his golf at Torry Pines to Tiger singing at MSG was pretty good.

  5. When we watch the NBA Finals tonight, I think we should appreciate how well Breen, JVG and Mark Jackson, and Stu, Wilbon and J Barry all get along... because watching Costas, Strange and Jacobson is just... well, it's Awful Announcing at it's, er, finest.

Those three are so uncomfortable, even after 4 days.

  6. I couldn't agree more. When you add Jimmy Roberts to the mix it get even more awkward.

  7. Maltbie - "That's being kind to your competitor, he's got a bad knee, you don't want to outdrive him."

I really think the golf announcers/analysts are some of the best in sports... you know, lynching comments aside.

  8. Announcer brief reviews:
Miller - I can't stand him. He is arrogant and self-absorbed. Everything is how it relates back to him.

Hicks - Like Nantz without the great pipes.

Costas - He was good in the show open, but what's he really doing otherwise?

Strange - More unlikable than Miller.

Jacobsen - Good guy - just seems lost.

Maltbie/Pepper/etal - solid, but not as noteworthy as the roving reporter bunch at CBS.

  9. No chinamen in the field this week??

  10. Mal... agree for the most part, though I like Miller, he seems like the only analyst who will actually criticize a player... and agree 150% on the CBS guys... if we could gt McCord and Feherety to do every golfing event, I'd be a happy, happy man.

  11. I've always like Miller too even though he's kind of a dick. I can't stand Hicks at all though.

  12. Rocco is just doing what he can to GIVE Tiger this Open...

  13. Miller, talking about Tiger: "this is like watching the last laps of a NASCAR event and the car has a flat tire".

  14. Earlier, Miller said that Rocco looked like someone who would clean Tiger's pool..........what an ass

  15. Good god, I just swtiched to ESPN for the baseball game... and Joe Morgan's blazing white collar/tie combo damn near blinded me...

    Fucking Joe Morgan.

  16. On #16 tee, Westwood is teeing his ball and Tiger peeks in Lee's bag - I guess to see what club he is hitting.

  17. Most oft-cited facts: Tiger has never lost a major after having a 54 hole lead. And, no team has come back in the NBA finals from a 3 -1 deficit. What's the over/under on hearing the latter tonight? We've heard the first about 50 times today.

  18. Good lord... Tiger with a good putt to tie... we'll see if Tiger is human at all here.

  19. I don't know what was better... the Putt, the reaction by Tiger, or that Dan Hicks and Johnny Miller just didn't talk and let the picture do the talking...

Tiger breaking out the double fist pump was pretty awesome though.

  20. I'm actually going to watch golf tomorrow. Golf on a Monday. By choice. I'm... I don't know.

  21. Did Tiger just compare golf to playing Plinko? If so, he is my all-time hero!

  22. Wow. Amazing. Not the hardest putt he's had to hit in the US Open, but the best one yet with what it meant. I don't know about you guys, but I think this U.S. Open has been one of the greatest golf tournies we've had in a long, LONG time.

Also, Rocco is awesome. I love how he tells it like it is. Looking forward to Monday golf. Can't wait.

  23. Dan Hicks is nothing spectacular to me. Decent, but not great.

I used to hate Miller, but he's grown on me. After I realized he's pretty accurate with his assessments, both positive and negative, I just look past his occasional assery.

But holy hell in a handbasket, Strange and Jacobsen were terrible! (The next notes those two see from NBC may be printed on pink paper, if you know what I mean.) Costas tried to steer that sinking ship, but it just wasn't happening. I wonder what the main broadcast crew was thinking while that trainwreck kept going.

  24. That little gnome Costas should never be allowed anywhere near a golf course again....unless it's to rake the sand traps.

    ReplyDelete
  25. How many of Johnny Miller's sentences ended with the phrase "Eh, Roger?"

    ReplyDelete
  26. Why is Bob Costas there? What does he know about golf? What does he contribute? Who dyes his hair?!

Best comment all tournament was by Judy Rankin: "You know, I think Phil overstrategizes a bit."

Rankin knows more golf & says things in a calmer, more spot-on way than 90% of the other announcers. Put her in the main booth.

  27. How many times did Dan Hicks have to tell us what time it was on the East coast? "It's now 4:15 out east…it's now 6 p.m. out east…etc." Who cares what time it is out East? We have clocks, Dan.
