"From my own experience visiting the troops in the Middle East, I can tell you this, though: despite how the conflict has been portrayed by our glorious media, if you gave any U.S. soldier a gun with two bullets in it, and he found himself in an elevator with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Osama bin Laden, there's a good chance that Nancy Pelosi would get shot twice, and Harry Reid and bin Laden would be strangled to death."- David Feherty

Talk about terrible analogies. However, I don't think CBS is going to be firing Feherty anytime soon, as Olbermann seemed to be calling for. The network has already classified the statement as "unacceptable attempt on humor", and Feherty has apologized via a statement from his agent: "The passage was a metaphor meant to describe how American troops felt about our 43rd president. In retrospect, it was inappropriate and unacceptable, and has clearly insulted Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid, and for that, I apologize."
President George W. Bush Comes Home (D Magazine)
Hummm Keith, what if he had said Dick Cheney and George W Bush instead? Would you call for his firing then?
ReplyDeleteToo bad Olbermann wasn't in the elevator.
ReplyDeleteBest part: Feherty gets paid to appear on TV yet is not part of the media.
ReplyDeleteDid someone actually say that Scott? Not that I necessarily disagree with what you're saying.
ReplyDeleteWhy do stories like this always result in empty hypothetical partisan rebuttals?
I'm not on either side, just saying.
He's probably not going to get fired because a lot of servicemen actually do feel that way. I know a couple and Nancy Pelosi is public enemy #1 to them.
ReplyDeleteI know, i know, it's shocking to the media that anyone anywhere could have dislike for the Democratic patriots leading our country.
I wonder what would happen if you went back in time and looked over all the things Olberman said about Bush and Cheney...
Pelosi isn't a senator, she is Speaker of the House.
ReplyDeleteLighten up, it was a joke. It may not have been funny, but it was a joke. Same with the Wanda Sykes jokes about Rush L. and other republicans at the Whitehouse Gridiron Dinner over the weekend. They are jokes.
It is funny how dissent was the highest form of patriotism under Bush but some of the same folks who were saying that then are not now.
But... that wasn't an analogy, it was a joke. He wasn't saying that's the point of view he supports, he was... telling a joke.
ReplyDeleteOlbermann is being disingenuous to call for Feherty's firing, especially when he knows Feherty has on multiple occasions voiced his support for liberal causes like abortion and gay marriage.
People need to learn to take a joke.
I like Olberman, but he's letting his democratic side show too much. If he were to have made jokes about bush and cheney like you all have said Olberman wouldn't care. I don't think CBS will fire Feherty, but I think he probably will take some time off or be suspended. But I would expect to see him on their coverage still...except at the Masters possibly cuz Augusta National may not like this.
ReplyDeleteThis is why politics suck. I care little for the maneuvering and bantering but if some people get their jollies that way, they have their prerogative.
ReplyDelete"I like Olberman, but he's letting his democratic side show too much."
ReplyDeleteNo, get the fuck out.
How is it that this guy says the nonsense he does, and yet doesn't have to apologize, and gets bigger and bigger press coverage and bigger and bigger jobs in sports and honorifics?
Why is that? It couldn't be that the majority of media elitist idiots share his worldview, could it?
Please direct me to the time when Keith Olbermann assured his audience that US troops were little more than political assassins who would murder the Speaker of the House and the Senate Majority Leader. I'll be over waiting over here in the False Equivalence Section.
ReplyDeleteMan, I seem to have missed where this turned in to a politics blog.
ReplyDeleteBut he didn't describe Augusta's greens using a bikini wax reference, so he's good.
ReplyDelete/Gary McCord rolls his eyes and continues to search for justice.
A good question would be when or if Feherty will get invited onto the Dan Patrick Show any time soon.
