If you missed the unbelievable ending from the Mets-Yankees game last night, you need to watch this video. If not for the hilarity of the ending, but for the collection of reactions from New York announcers. Here are the call from the YES Network, SNY, WCBS and WFAN last night....
Man, I don't know what's more embarrassing, the drop itself or the Yankees praising A-Rod like he's actually clutch. The best part about the play was that it was so shocking that John Sterling didn't even give his famous "Yankees Win...Thaaaaa Yankees Win!"
Um. You must have not watched that video because Sterling clearly did "Yankees Win...Thaaaaa Yankees Win!.
ReplyDeletei didn't hear any praise of a-rod either
ReplyDelete@right reverend
ReplyDeleteNot the broadcasters, the players. When they mob Rodriguez towards the end.
im n ot really sure how this was bad announcing, they actually all called it perfectly, they were all shocked and gave out excitement, as well as incorperating what was going on at all times, i dissagree great job announcing and yes sterling did give his famous line.
ReplyDeleteWhat exactly were the Yankees players supposed to do?
ReplyDelete"A-Rod becomes the hero with a pop-up!"

Whenever Sterling says "It's an A-bomb...from A-Rod" a puppy dies.
ReplyDeleteYeah I thought this was great announcing on all accounts. Usually i'm critical of SNY for being to homerish...but Gary did a great job, so did Kay, Sterling and Howie Rose.
ReplyDeleteHello all , watched that game on archive earlier in the day in France and while the ending didn't please me it was certainly "something to see".....
ReplyDeleteAs I'm watching the second game of this series on a saturday night I keep thinking I'd like to avoid mc carver and buck but somehow the mets radio crew doesn't do it anymore for me. this is even more odd since my first baseball memory was listenning to the radio broadcast of WFAN calling the last game of the subway series in 2000.
Who called that game apart from Bob Murphy? I know for sure hagin did not and I know kay and sterling called it from the yankees side with buck and mccarver on tv. Who was completing the mets booth @ that time? any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Yann
Gary Cohen was in radio until SNY became a network in '06 i think. Howie Rose did TV until Murphy retired and then took over and sat with Cohen until 06.
ReplyDeleteHope that helps.
Why does New York need both YES and SNY to cover the game?
ReplyDeleteActually Yann, Howie Rose is arguably the best announcer in NY. And I'm speaking as a Yankees and Rangers fan about a Mets and Islander broadcaster, though his best call came when he was doing Rangers games on radio (MATTEAU, MATTEAU). Though Wayne Hagin is awful, Rose will begin and end games so listen to that if you want to avoid Buck and McCarver next time.
ReplyDeleteAs for the calls ofthe drop, Kay, Cohen and Rose did a good job, particularly the Mets announcers who made it a point to say that Jeter and Texieria scored, while the Yankee guys just said Texieria with us assuming Jeter. Sterling, however, seemed like he had no clue what to say, sounding too much like Dick Stockton, Bob Cole or Dick Enberg when they do a game now, kind of behind a little bit, not showing the required excitement and no confidence in his description.
WFAN has Ed Randall "Talking Baseball" every Sunday morning. Each hour begins with radio calls of big plays. Today the show began with the dropped pop-up -- and the only call used was from Howie Rose. Hear it once and you'll know his call is an instant classic.
ReplyDelete@yannils, @bk: Bob Murphy retired in 2003 (he died in 2004). Gary Cohen did Mets radio from the mid-90's until 2005 and moved to SNY when it signed on in 2006.
@Morgan: The Mets are part owners of SNY and the Yankees are part owners of YES.
thanks to bk keith and chuck for the info! I'm gonna try howie rose next day game when the mets aren't blown out right outta the gate.
ReplyDeleteWent back to the friday game since my yankee fan friend won't stop bragging about it. We thought it'd be kinda cool to dig up the spanish calls. the WQBU one is kinda awesome even tho I don't understand much spanish. Also hindsight being 20/20 I believe it was keith hernandez who said after K rod walked Texeira to get to alex rodriguez " I like that move" yikessssssssssss.
