Gus Johnson Uses An Unfortunate Analogy

Monday, November 02, 2009

Chris Johnson is undoubtedly very fast, but when describing his prowess in that department, you probably shouldn't call it "get away from the cops speed". That's what Gus Johnson said during the Titans romp over the Jags yesterday, and it brings up a lot of questions. First the video....

"First down and ten. Johnson ... gets his shoulders square! Watch out! He's got gettin' away from the cops speed. Touchdown."- Gus Johnson

I know that this is just another attempt at making a clever comment, that went wrong, but an ESPN commenter just got suspended for a similar line of thinking recently. What would happen if Jim Nantz blurted that line out instead of Gujo?

Exciting calls like these are made on the fly, but every announcer should seriously just stick to the gameplan and not try to be so clever.

I like to think that Gus was just busting out a well-timed Dukes of Hazzard reference.

Once upon a time, sportscasters weren't the sorts to try and script a clever phrase.
Something tells me we won't see those days for a long time, if ever.

The only question it brings up is, "What's the problem?" People of all races and ages run from the cops. How is this bad? Lighten up. The only thing "unfortunate" are people who make a big deal out of nothing like this.

Every announcer should stick to the game plan? You should just mute your tv and look for a gamecast on espn.com or something if that's the case.

The day Gus Johnson sticks to the gameplan is the day broadcasting as we have known it ends.

This is such a waste of words. Why would you even bring this up? You are just looking for controversy. How could that possibly offend you? People like you are the reason that everyone has to apologize for the littlest comments.

Did you just say that announcers shouldn't try to be clever?

Fuck off.

Gus Johnson is awesome, and this was a funny line. Douchebags are ruining America.
