By now you've heard that Mark McGwire has copped to using steroids during his career, but more specifically when he broke Roger Maris' HR record in 1998. Shocking, I know. McGwire issued this admission to the Associated Press, but it will be MLB Network and Bob Costas that gets the first interview this evening....

MLB Network’s Bob Costas will have an exclusive in-depth television interview with Mark McGwire tonight on MLB Network live at 7:00 p.m. ET about McGwire’s admission of using performance enhancing drugs during his career. This is the first television interview granted by McGwire since he admitted using PEDs in a statement earlier today.

Following the exclusive interview, MLB Network’s Matt Vasgersian, Mitch Williams, Joe Magrane, Tom Verducci and Ken Rosenthal will discuss their reactions to the conversation. Costas will provide reaction from location in California and MLB Network’s Harold Reynolds and Peter Gammons will also provide commentary.

I'm one of the many people that followed McGwire's every at-bat during that season, and while I don't necessarily blame him for using steroids, this is something that should have come out years ago. Hiding that fact just makes me think he's a scumbag. I'm hoping that Bob Costas conducts a better interview than Peter Gammons' sitdown with A-Rod last year, but I doubt much of what McGwire says is going to make me change my views on him.

Peter Gammons had a little bit of time off for the holidays (much like myself), but is ready to head back to work. Gammons will make his MLB Network debut this Wednesday, January 6th, and the topic of discussion will be the 2010 HOF Class (which will also be on announced on Wednesday)....

Hall of Fame award-winning baseball writer Peter Gammons will make his debut on MLB Network with the 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Election announcement show on Wednesday, January 6. MLB Network’s Bob Costas, Harold Reynolds, Matt Vasgersian, Tom Verducci, Jon Heyman and Ken Rosenthal and National Baseball Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson will also be part of the 90-minute announcement show beginning live at 1:00 p.m. ET. Gammons, Costas, Reynolds, Vasgersian, Verducci, Heyman and Rosenthal will then recap of the 2010 Hall of Fame ballot results with the hour-long show Class of 2010 at 9:00 p.m. ET. This will be the first time that Gammons, a baseball journalist for 40 years, and Costas, a 30-year sports broadcasting veteran, will work together.

Also on Wednesday, Victor Rojas, Dan Plesac, Sean Casey and Jon Heyman will cover the latest updates and moves all 30 clubs are making and planning in preparation for the upcoming season with Hot Stove, MLB Network’s nightly studio show in the offseason, at 6:00 p.m. ET.

There couldn't be a better opportunity to use Peter Gammons in his first time on the network. The Hall of Fame is one of Gammons' specialties, and of course he's a HOFer himself. I'll try to give it a watch an let your know how he does. Not like it will be a hard transition.

At about 3pm, the news came down that Peter Gammons was leaving ESPN. At about 6pm, the rumors that he was joining the MLB Network started surfacing. And 30 minutes ago, came word from MLB-N that he is in fact making the switch. Here's the release....

MLB Network and MLB Advanced Media today announced that Hall of Fame baseball writer Peter Gammons has joined MLB Network and MLB.com as an on-air and online analyst. As part of a multi-year deal, Gammons will offer analysis and commentary on MLB Network for breaking news and special events like the Trade Deadline, First-Year Player Draft, Winter Meetings and Postseason. Gammons will also serve as a signature and regularly featured writer for MLB.com’s new columnist initiative, writing commentary on breaking news and posting several articles online each week.

“After 40 years covering baseball, the opportunity to move on to MLB Network is a great and daunting opportunity,” said Gammons. “My journalistic life has revolved around baseball, and to be involved with people whose network is devoted to baseball, and baseball only, is something I look forward to with excitement. We all wish pitchers and catchers reported tomorrow. One of the greatest things about baseball is that it is held to a higher standard than any other sport, which holds those of us who care about it to a higher standard. I hope I can contribute to that standard.”

Gammons will be appearing on Hot Stove to start out, but you can expect him on just about every single offering MLB-N has to offer. For someone who loves Baseball as much as Gammons does, the network choice is an obvious move. However, you have to wonder what it took to wrestle him away from the "Leader". If you asked me at the start of this blog, who are the two people ESPN couldn't lose from their Baseball roster it would be Gammons and Harold Reynolds. Both are now with the budding MLB Network.

Update: Brooks from SbB also has received word that Gammons could be part-timing with NESN soon.

NESN, New England’s most watched sports network, announced today that Hall of Fame baseball writer and longtime ESPN and Boston Globe baseball analyst/reporter Peter Gammons has entered into a multi-year agreement to join NESN as a regular studio analyst, reporter and online contributor.

“I’m a New Englander who wanted to be Jackie Jensen,” said Peter Gammons. “I started out at the Boston Globe and wrote about Jerry Remy when he was at Somerset High School. I was lucky enough to be there for the Munson-Fisk fight in 1973 and The Sixth Game and the ’78 playoff, and when my local cable company wouldn’t put NESN on our system I signed the override petitions.”

Near the end of every Baseball season, networks scramble to pick up some of the games in the Playoff race, and this year is no different. We saw some of it last weekend, but the real fun will start this Friday night. TBS has decided to pick up the Red Sox-Yankees game that evening, with Chip Caray and Buck Martinez on the call.

The MLB Network will also air a BOS-NYY game (today, 3:30pm), as well showing the Tigers, Twins, Cardinals and Rockies, in the coming week. Add to that the FOX and ESPN schedules and you have one heck of a Baseball weekend. Here's a schedule for you....

In my opinion, there's nothing more relaxing than watching day Baseball during the Summer. Well unless you're an O's fan, and they're currently getting blown out by the Tigers. Anyway, the MLB Network is expanding their slate of live games with four day games during the month of August, and I couldn't be more in favor of this idea....

The MLB Network will launch a new lineup of live afternoon telecasts with Thursday's game between the Rockies and the Phillies from Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park.

That telecast will also lead off four Thursday attractions, with next week's game featuring the Tigers at the Red Sox.

The new programming was revealed on Wednesday, when the Network announced its game broadcast schedule through Aug. 29.

The added Thursday afternoon telecasts will be followed by the regularly scheduled Thursday Night Baseball, treating fans to doubleheaders as the division races head into the stretch.

"Baseball is unique in that it has several weekday afternoon games," Tony Petitti, president and CEO of MLB Network noted in a statement, "and we see this as a great way for MLB Network to distinguish itself.

"We wanted to provide fans with as many live games as possible and we're looking forward to airing matchups from some of the top contenders in the American and National Leagues," Petitti added.

The debut Thursday afternoon game will precede the Red Sox at the Yankees -- who are still looking for their first win of the season over Boston following eight straight losses to their AL East rivals.

There are only three (four if you count today's) day games on the channel through the rest of August, but this should give the network some great leverage, as playoff races heat up in September. Here is the rest of the live schedule on the MLB Network through August.

I didn't think anything that Bob Costas did would ever make Page six, but apparently I was wrong. The NY Post spotted Costas and his wife at dinner recently, with some interesting guests....

ALEX Rodriguez and Kate Hudson are going strong. The couple joined Bob Costas and wife Jill Sutton after Sunday's Yankees win over the Blue Jays for dinner at Scalinatella on East 61st Street. "A-Rod and Kate were holding hands and whispering in each other's ears the whole time," says our spy. "They definitely looked every bit together." Two nights before, the lovebirds were in a party of 11 at Serendipity 3.

Well that's an interesting pairing now, isn't it? It definitely seems strange, especially when you consider Costas was one of the first people to interview and defend Selena Roberts, but you've gotta do what you gotta do to get that in, I guess.

A-ROD, KATE HUDSON GOING STRONG (NY Post)

The MLB Network added yet another piece to their ever-growing puzzle of reporters and analysts today, by hiring FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal. According to MLB-N PR, Rosenthal will continue to work for Fox Sports, both online and on-air....

MLB Network today announced that Ken Rosenthal has joined its roster of on-air talent. Rosenthal will join the cast of MLB Tonight beginning Tuesday, June 30 at 6:00 p.m. ET. Rosenthal, who will continue his reporting for FoxSports.com and MLB on Fox, joins Sports Illustrated senior writers Tom Verducci and Jon Heyman as Baseball Insiders on the MLB Network team.

“Ken brings a wealth of on-air reporting experience and insight into the game and we’re excited to welcome him to MLB Network,” said Tony Petitti, president and CEO of MLB Network. “As we grow as a network, it’s important that we continue to bring fans the most up-to-date information from the best resources in the business.”

Rosenthal has served as lead field reporter for MLB on Fox since 2005. Prior to joining Fox Sports, Rosenthal worked as the national baseball writer for The Sporting News and as a sportswriter at the Baltimore Sun, where he was named Maryland Sportswriter of the Year five times by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. He is a voting member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.

I still think Ken Rosenthal is a hypocrite after his Outside the Lines tirade during the whole "Ibanez Steroid Speculation" thing, but this is another big get for the MLB Network. Unlike the NFL, Major League Baseball only has one or two connected national reporters. Tom Verducci is one of them, and Rosenthal is the other. Both are now employed by the MLB Network.

In other Rosenthal news, be sure to Twitter him questions during the All Star Game. The reporter will be answering them during his time in St. Louis.

"The Pen", a reality show which follows the goings on of the Philadelphia Phillies bullpen, is set to debut this Sunday on the MLB Network. The show gives unprecedented access to a Major League club, and will be narrated by none other than Mitch Williams....

The Pen takes a look at the players’ lives following the team’s 2008 World Series win and the pressures of keeping their roster spot for the 2009 team. The series features relief pitchers Brad Lidge, Ryan Madson, J.C. Romero, Scott Eyre, Clay Condrey, Chad Durbin, Gary Majewski, Jack Taschner, J.A. Happ, Chan Ho Park and bullpen coach Mick Billmeyer, and follows them to everything from fishing trips and youth baseball games to the White House for a post-World Series visit. The program also speaks with players following the sudden death of longtime Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas on April 13.

“As a reality-based series The Pen is the ultimate look into the lives of these players, both on and off the field,” said Tony Petitti, President and CEO of MLB Network. “So much of what we know about relief pitchers is based on statistics and saves, and a series like The Pen gives a level of familiarity to each player.”

The program, a co-production between MLB Network and MLB Productions, marks the first program ever produced using a camera and microphones installed in a Major League bullpen to film in-game and practice footage. Two other cameras were installed in Citizens Bank Park - one behind home plate and one at low first base - and were controlled by MLB Network’s headquarters in Secaucus, New Jersey. Producer Danny Field suited up as a catcher with a camera attached to his mask to capture footage during Spring Training in Clearwater, Florida.

The details of the press release alone should be enough to make you want to watch, but after watching the preview, I'm officially in. The schedule is below if you want to mark your calendars....

There is a revolution in the world of home decor, and that revolution is "man caves". Men from coast to coast have been creating basements filled with bars, sports paraphenallia and arcade games, and Major League Baseball is getting involved. The MLB Network's Harold Reynolds and Mitch Williams will be appearing on the DIY channel's "Man Caves" in September, and will be giving away an officially licensed MLB cave. Via USA Today....

Major League Baseball will formally announce today that the DIY Network's popular Man Caves series will include a Sept. 29 show in which some lucky guy — and it has to be a guy — gets his own MLB cave.

The show transforms rooms in houses — usually basements — into pricy playrooms for really big boys. DIY, as in do-it-yourself, frequently creates sports-themed caves — ex-NBA player Brandon Williams gets his garage converted in the Aug. 4 show — in a series hosted by Fox NFL analyst Tony Siragusa.

But with the MLB tie-in will come lots of hype on MLB Network — viewers will be asked to send in videos explaining why they're cave-worthy — and MLBN analysts Harold Reynolds and Mitch Williams will show up for the cave creations.

Sounds like a great promotion, but I wonder if it's for a specific team, or the entire league? Maybe Bud Selig will make DIY create a "Selig Shrine" of sorts, so his legacy can be remembered???

I've been impressed with not only the live baseball coverage on the MLB Network, but with some of the in house productions as well (especially "Prime 9"). Well the network is all set to debut another one this weekend, and they're about to get all statistical and historical on you. Via MLB-N PR....

MLB Network will air the television premiere of the original documentary “Base Ball Discovered” on Sunday, May 17 at 6:00 p.m. ET. Narrated by Golden Globe and Emmy-winning actor Edward James Olmos and produced by MLB.com, the film is a detailed exploration of the many generational theories about the origins of America’s national pastime that will take viewers overseas as it makes an unexpected and historic discovery in Surrey, a county in the South East of England.

Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully has said of the film, “'Base Ball Discovered' is a grand slam of a study. It provides an intentional walk through the scorebook of history and whether of British or Yankee beginnings, rounders or cricket, whether to salute a general or pitch to a private, it scores big time and is a winner.”

In September 2008, “Base Ball Discovered” won the Award for Baseball Excellence at the third annual Baseball Film Festival at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, NY. The award is given to the film which excels in research, factual accuracy, historical context, appreciation of the game, and/or embodiment of the spirit of baseball.

The show will air this Sunday at 6pm, and repeats will be on May 19th, May 21st, May 22nd and May 24th. I'll see if I can get some clips ahead of time, but you might want to block some time to check it out.

Matt Vasgersian doesn't seem to have a filter at times, and if you asked him about it, I think he'd be the first to admit that. Yesterday, the MLB Network host thought about what he had done, and issued an on-air apology. Via the Biz of Baseball....

Obviously it was a poor choice of joke, and the timing was just terrible. There was no ill intent and hopefully people don't hold it against Vasgersian. Moving on....

I don't know if it's something in his brain or what, but Matt Vasgersian must just forget that he's actually being broadcast to thousands of people at certain times. There was the Ozarks incident, the f-bomb on MLB Network, and now this. Via Bugs & Cranks....

Wow. There are times to try and make jokes, and definitely times not to make them. You can't go from serious/somber voice to lighthearted that fast! Plus that dude looked nothing like Donovan McNabb. Just plain awkward.

Update: Vasgersian has responded via KSK....

“I am an idiot .. Save the racial stuff which is just flat out wrong, almost all of what has been posted on my regrettably horrific timing is spot on .. It was a bad decision made on live tv and i can absolutely understand how that make an announcer sound insensitive. Bad on the spot judgment. Nobody feels worse about it than I do guys.”

I've been watching the Yankees' first game at their new stadium on the MLB Network for most of the afternoon, to see how good of a transition Bob Costas is making back into the booth. For the better part of the game, he (along with Reynolds and Kaat) has been doing a great job, but he had a pretty big gaff during the fifth inning.

If you're going to get the opportunity to call the first homerun at Yankee Stadium, and people will hear the call forever, you might want to get the player's name right as he rounds the bases....

Whoops! Again, he's been great for most of the afternoon, but that was a pretty big slip up right there. I'm thinking the Yankees will file away the YES Network's call, instead of Costas'.

Harold Reynolds was up in Seattle for the Mariners home opener, and even got the honor of throwing out the first pitch to Ken Griffey Jr. Well, Baseball Tonight got a hold of the footage, and decided to critique the toss. Here's your clip....

Pretty funny. The Cincy Mayor caught me off-guard there for a second, and while the toss wasn't that bad, you've got to get it over the plate, Harold!

For its first eight Thursday games, the MLB Network managed to fit sixteen different teams into the schedule. Well with the addition of a set of Saturday games, not only will the network now have 52 total games to air in its first season, but it will be showing 24 of the league's 30 teams in the first seven weeks of the season....

MLB Network today announced the addition of a package of weekly live national game broadcasts on Saturday evenings, as well as the schedule of games for April and May. Combined with its Thursday Night Baseball package that begins tonight, MLB Network will now carry 52 live regular season games in its first year. The first Saturday night game will air this week, on April 11 at 8:00 p.m. ET with the Los Angeles Dodgers at the Arizona Diamondbacks. With the addition of the Saturday night games, MLB Network will now feature 24 of the 30 MLB clubs within the first seven weeks of the season.

Games will be blacked out in each team’s home television territory. Viewers in areas subject to blackouts will be provided with an alternate game telecast or other programming.

“Adding these Saturday night games will allow us to further our commitment to showcase all 30 Major League clubs at the national level,” said Tony Petitti, President and Chief Executive Officer of MLB Network. “Having two national games each week will also help us augment our already robust MLB Tonight studio programming.”

Seems like a great plan if you ask me. Not only will this help fans see teams they normally wouldn't, but this could become a fantasy player's hub for information throughout the night. Here's the Saturday schedule for you to check out....

The MLB Network has come up with yet another interesting idea. During the debut of Thursday Night Baseball, they will begin show a series of vignettes that will attempt to recreate great moments in Baseball History. The plan is to take the existing clips and edit them to show how the event would look with the camera angles of today.

Here's a look at the first one, which is of Bob Gibson's seventeen strikeouts during the 1968 World Series....

While I don't entirely understand the point of them, the Gibson one sure looks cool. There's a total of six, and they will debut one a night on Thursday night, over the next six weeks.

MLB has come up with some pretty good documentaries over the years, and it seems like they have yet another on their hands. MLB will be using the MLB Network to launch "This Is Beyond Baseball", which will be a 30-minute set of vignettes in which current and former players will discuss the role of Baseball beyond the field....

Major League Baseball today announced the launch of a new integrated multi-media marketing campaign titled “This is Beyond Baseball,” which will celebrate baseball’s unique place in the cultural fabric of society and in the lives of fans. The campaign will officially launch with a special on MLB Network this Sunday, March 29 at 8:00 p.m. ET titled This Is Beyond Baseball, a documentary-style program created by MLB Productions. Narrated by legendary broadcaster Vin Scully, the 30-minute program comprises a series of vignettes that communicate the magnitude of what baseball represents and that the scope of its impact goes well beyond the game on the field.

The program features insight and commentary from many prominent current and former players, including Ken Griffey Jr., Derek Jeter, Cal Ripken Jr., Curtis Granderson, Derek Lee and Terry Francona, as well as a special profile of the Upton family – father Manny and sons B.J. and Justin – a unique family story of dedication and determination.

Again, I'm a sucker for a good documentary, but this one seems really good. Plus the narration from Vin Scully will only add to the stories. I'll try to check it out when it airs this Sunday at 8pm.
