Bryant Gumbel Is Battling Lung Cancer

Tuesday, December 08, 2009

Bryant Gumbel was filling in for Regis on Regis and Kelly today, and he dropped a bomb on the viewing audience. Gumbel announced that he has been receiving treatment for Lung Cancer. Via People....

The sportscaster and TV host, 61, said that he had surgery last month to remove a malignant tumor in his chest, a revelation prompted when Kelly Ripa asked Gumbel, subbing for Regis Philbin, to dance – and he begged off. According to Gumbel, part of his lung was removed, and he will be seeing his surgeon next week.

“We had told a few people, we told my family, obviously. I even kept it from my staff at Real Sports. So I’m okay for the time being. I’m hoping they greenlight me to play golf again.”- Bryant Gumbel
While I find it a bit odd that he decided to announce it on an ABC show that his filling in on, he does seem to be in good spirits about the whole thing. I obviously can't imagine what it would be like to hear that type of news, but I can guarantee I wouldn't be as cool with it as Gumbel. Good luck in beating it, Bryant.

Marv vs. 50 Cent Update

Monday, November 23, 2009

Last week, all the buzz was the alleged run-in between Marv Albert and rapper 50 Cent. There were reports of a verbal confrontation and some even said that there was a potential punch thrown in the fracas. Well over the weekend, Marv came out and said that not only was the punch a fabrication, the whole incident was. Via USA Today....

At issue is what happened when Albert last week was getting set to appear on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live. As he was walking backstage to his dressing room he "heard something" that he thought were people "kidding around." The raised voices, he thinks, came from someone with rapper 50 Cent— another Kimmel guest — wanting to use a phone in Albert's room. "But I didn't even see the guys and don't even think there was a scuffle."

Still, the diminutive TNT NBA announcer says he and friends and family found various online accounts of "stuff that never happened" — included that he and 50 Cent had a fight. "I kept reading about new things that never happened. Maybe it will keep going until Jimmy Kimmel gets punched."
Well that solves that. It seemed a little far fetched, but crazier things have happened. I'm just happy that we don't have to worry about Albert being gunned down in Vegas after a boxing match. Whew.

Wait, There's A Marv Albert And 50 Cent Feud?

Friday, November 20, 2009

Well there's a title I never thought I'd write. Apparently there was a bit of a scuffle at the Jimmy Kimmel Show that included Marv Albert versus 50 Cent and his posse. Via the LA Times....

As Albert arrived, with an entourage of one, TNT public relations specialist Jeff Pomeroy, there was a sudden scuffle when a multitude of 50 Cent protectors seemed unfamiliar with Albert. There was shouting ("It's Marv Albert," yelled a Kimmel show guard, a pronouncement that seemed to have no effect on the 50 Cent phalanx.) There were obscenities. A fist or two flying. A "Don't you put your hands on me" pronouncement.

And finally Albert made it to his waiting room, relatively unruffled but slightly puzzled. "Did you see that?" Albert said. "I thought they were kidding, but then I realized they weren't."
I thought this was a joke at first, or a PR stunt, but it actually isn't. How someone couldn't recognize Marv Albert is beyond me, but furthermore, how someone could want to rough up a 68 year old man is beyond me. You are dead to me 50 Cent! Actually that took place after his second album dropped....soooo you're doubly dead to me!

Terry Bradshaw Officially Dumber Than A Chicken

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Terry Bradshaw is obviously a very colorful character, and it's long been suspected that his "dumb southerner" routine is just an act. Well thanks to a chicken on the new (and god awful) Jay Leno show, we know that's not the case...

Your tale of the tape....

Chicken: Ravens over the Bengals (wrong), the Falcons over the 49ers (right), and the Patriots over the Broncos (wrong)
Bradshaw: Ravens over the Bengals (wrong), 49ers over the Falcons (wrong), and Patriots over the Broncos (wrong)

I mean obviously those were some tough games, and both Bradshaw and the Chicken did terrible, but a loss is a loss. Terry is officially dumber than a chicken.

Emmitt Smith Will Be On The "Today Show" This Friday

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

This whole Emmitt Smith as a rogue reporter, for various networks, is highly entertaining. He was last seen talking about tailgating on FOX Sports, but this Friday he's heading to the big time. Emmitt will be taking both the Today Show's, Matt Lauer and Al Roker, on a tour of the Cowboys' new stadium!

Not only will Emmitt be your tour guide this Friday, but Lauer will be interviewing Jerry Jones, and Roker will be hanging with the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. The unintentional comedy of this event could be off the charts.

Hopefully Erin Andrews Has Closure Now

Monday, September 14, 2009

Everything that can be said, has been said, about Erin Andrews being violated in her hotel room. Andrews, however, needed closure of her own and went on The Oprah Winfrey Show this past Friday to achieve it. Most of what was said in the interview, we knew ahead of time, but here is a short clip in case you missed it....

I can't imagine what her parents went through, let alone Andrews herself. Hopefully normalcy will come back to her soon, and she can feel comfortable in her own skin again. Thankfully she's great at her job, and she hasn't seemed to miss a beat since her return two Thursdays ago.

People Magazine Not Exactly Sure Who Erin Andrews Is

Tuesday, September 01, 2009

People Magazine has decided to piggyback on this whole Erin Andrews on Oprah thing, but they have a slight problem. They seem to think that Andrews is actually Heidi Watney. Via Deadspin....

Erin Andrews To Appear On Oprah

Monday, August 31, 2009

Erin Andrews has yet to appear since her "hotel incident", but according to Sports Illustrated, that will change on September 11th. The ESPN sideline reporter will be on a special episode of Oprah, that she taped last week, and will be the only time she does an interview on the matter....

ESPN reporter Erin Andrews, who was secretly videotaped in the nude while alone in a hotel room, will discuss the incident on The Oprah Winfrey Show on Sept. 11, SI.com has learned.

The segment was taped last week and will be the only in-depth interview Andrews gives on the subject. The five-minute video, which appeared to be shot through a hotel room door peephole, was posted on the Internet last month and quickly taken down.

Andrews will be reporting from the sidelines Thursday when ESPN televises the college football season opener between South Carolina and host N.C. State. She last appeared on the network as part of its ESPY Awards broadcast July 19. Network officials, who will accompany her to N.C. State, said she had a scheduled vacation through September and was not off the air because of the taping incident. ESPN said it will not address the incident during the game broadcast. The entertainment show Inside Edition attempted to get credentialed for the game but was turned down.
It's amazing how far this situation has traveled. From a rumor, all the way to Andrews appearing on Oprah. What a long strange trip it's been, but hopefully this will bring her some closure.

Batting Stance Guy Appears On Letterman, Signs Deal With Fox

Tuesday, July 14, 2009

Gar Ryness, better known as "Batting Stance Guy", is a cult hero among the blogs, and is known for recreating just about every MLB players baseball swing on Youtube. Well, Gar got a chance to put his talent on display for Letterman last night (no, not during Stupid Human Tricks), and here is a bit of his performance....

Just amazing. The fact that he brought up Hal Morris had me rolling on the ground. The good news doesn't stop there for Gar though. Fox has signed the Youtube sensation to appear on the 19 regional FOX networks the rest of the season. Congrats Gar!

Steve Nash Is The Best NBA Reporter Evar!

Thursday, June 11, 2009

Steve Nash is a weird weird dude, but at times can be downright hilarious. One of those times was last night on the Late Show with David Letterman, as he took a trip to Game Three for the show. Not only are there hilarious cameos throughout this video, but Nash even asks Jeff Van Gundy if his brother Stan got laid in High School!!! Enjoy....

Ah good times. I love how the big name stars just walked right past him. Tiger and Mike just saw a short white dude, and kept walking. Too funny.

Regis Bets John Saunders A Million Dollars That ND Is Going To A BCS Bowl Game

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

The Irish are certainly improved, and Charlie Weis is just now starting to play with his own recruits, but this bet might not work out so well for Regis Philbin. The talk show host was on College Football Live this afternoon, when he decided to take a little wager thrown out there by host John Saunders....

Ummm....11 out of 12? They do get USC, Washington and UConn at home, but Purdue and Pittsburgh on the road aren't exactly gimmes. Heck, they could lose their first game at home to Nevada. Let's just work on besting last year's six regular season wins first. Okay Rege?

Brace Yourself, Joe Buck's Talk Show Set For June 15th

Tuesday, May 05, 2009

It's been a good while since HBO announced Joe Buck would be replacing Bob Costas on his vacant talk show, and we now have a first air date, and a name for said show. According to Broadcasting & Cable, the quarterly program will be called "Joe Buck Live" and will be airing on June 15th. Oh and get this, the first episode will include a segment on bloggers!

New quarterly sports series Joe Buck Live is set to kick off June 15 at 9 p.m. EST on HBO. The show, produced by HBO Sports' Peabody and Emmy-winning production department, will include a live studio audience, interviews, panel discussions, and pre-recorded features.

The first episode explores sports and celebrity, delving into the 24-hour news cycle, bloggers, gossip columnists, sports talk radio, commercial endorsements, and today's multimillionaire superstar athletes.

"I am just going to be myself," Buck said of his new show. "We will cover serious topics, but we will also have a lot of fun. With the combination of live television, sports and entertainment, I am excited to see what happens. It's a new avenue for me and I am going to give it all I've got. I hope I am as funny as my mom says I am."
Great....just great. Not only do we have to deal with Buck himself, we have to deal with his first show being about a medium he knows nothing about. At least give the guy something he's knowlegable for his first airing. You know....fake moonings and Desperate Housewives.

Why Draft Mark Sanchez, When You Already Have Fallon At QB?

Monday, April 27, 2009

Larry Fitzgerald was on The Jimmy Fallon Show on Friday to promote Madden 2010, and brought along a few clips. The first were just shots of him getting tackled, but then he and Fallon brought out the big guns. Watch as Kellen Clemens goes down, and who his replacement is....

Now that's funny. Those graphics are insane, and I really hope they have the warmup bike in the game as well. Good stuff.

The Natinals Apparently Didn't Have The First Jersey Errors

A Look At Coach K's Appearance On The Colbert Report

Wednesday, April 22, 2009

There are standard levels of awkwardness, then there's Coach K on the Colbert Report last night. The Duke coach joined Colbert to talk about offensive plays, the NBA age limit, and of course....Socialism. Via First Cuts....

I don't really have much to add to that. I just hope this doesn't result in more random college coaches going on talk shows like this.

Football/Plate Skeet Shooting Should Be An Olympic Sport

Friday, April 17, 2009

Matthew Stafford has been making the rounds on the interview circuit as of late, and last night he made an appearance on the Jimmy Fallon Show. Following his interview, Fallon had the genius idea to toss plates in the air and have Stafford throw footballs at them. A skeet shooting competition of sorts. Here's your video via FAN IQ....

Too awesome. In fact, I'm thinking about getting some plates and a football and heading out into the yard right now. I think this also solidifies Stafford's spot as the number one overall pick next weekend.

Could Tony's "Today Show" Appearance Be Causing A PTI Rift?

Friday, March 27, 2009

Of course the answer is no, but there was yet another funny moment on PTI yesterday, when Wilbon called Kornheiser out for his appearance on the "Today Show" with Matt Lauer. Wilbon not only questioned it, but even accused Tony of "auditioning" for the show. Here's the clip (thanks to HK for the vid)....

It would never happen, but wouldn't it be funny if the end of PTI was brought on by Matt Lauer? If there's a way to go out....that would be it!

Lebron James Is A Little Bit Ridiculous

Thursday, March 26, 2009

The latest crazy Lebron James shot comes to us via BDL, but actually took place during a 60 Minutes interview with Lebron that will air this Sunday. James was talking with Steve Croft about whether or not he's reached his potential yet, when he decided to drop an underhanded half court shot on the interviewer....

Well that sure is impressive, right? The guy has to be a robot.

Tony Hams It Up With Matt Lauer On The Today Show

I mentioned late yesterday that Tony Kornheiser would be on the Today Show this morning, after he and Wilbon called out Matt Lauer, and here is your video. Not only does Tony don fake antlers but he even questions the fact that there are actual deer in the Hamptons. Enjoy!

That was actually pretty darn funny, and I'm with Kornheiser on this one. I would never call "one of the most trusted man on television" a liar, but I've been to the Hamptons before. There ain't no deer around dem parts!

Jimmy Fallon To Play Beer Pong With Another Tennis Player Tonight

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

It's extremely awkward that I find out the majority of news through Twitter now, but you can't stop technology, right? Via Jimmy Fallon's Twitter feed, I've learned that not only is his guest tonight, Anna Kournikova, but that Fallon will be challenging her to a game of beer pong....

You may remember Fallon got embarrassed by Serena Williams during his first week on the air, so hopefully he can get some beer pong street cred back. Also, hopefully he'll make it a habit of playing beer pong with attractive females. Seems like as good a recurring sketch as there is.
