Pierre McGuire Could Be Leaving NBC For Wild
Tuesday, May 05, 2009
There's a long list of commentators that end up in front office jobs, but it seems to happen in Hockey more often than any other Sport. Most recently, Barry Melrose took a turn in the coach's seat for the Lightning, and now NBC analyst Pierre McGuire is on the short list of candidates for the vacant GM spot with the Minnesota Wild. Via the Star Tribune....
With the help of a committee that includes former Wild CEO Jac Sperling, owner Craig Leipold has weeded down a list of nearly 30 applicants to a handful of men who bring vastly different perspectives to the job, multiple league and team sources say.Well that's certainly an interesting list of potential employees. I've always enjoyed McGuire's "Between The Glass" segments and insight, but it's rare that a move like this works out. No matter what the Sport is.
The short list includes Pittsburgh Penguins assistant GM Chuck Fletcher, TSN and NBC color analyst Pierre McGuire, longtime NHL GM and coach Pat Quinn, Nashville Predators assistant GM Paul Fenton and Wild acting GM Tom Lynn.
While other unidentified candidates possibly could emerge, sources say the two considered frontrunners have interviews lined up.
Fletcher, 41, is expected to be in town later this week, while it's believed McGuire, 47, will interview today.

I heard that his office will have plexiglass walls and be about 3 feet across, no desk.
As I Wild fan I don't know that I would love this move. Like you said these announcer to front office things never work (see Matt Millen for example). I like McGuire's work on TV, and would rather have him calling games then being GM.
Well... that leaves Darren Pang or Mike Milbury to fill that void should McGuire get the job.
Pierre will insist on nothing but Mike Richards clones because of their leadership ability, thus ensuring if the Wild ever make the playoffs they'll get bounced in the first round and nobody will have more than two points.
This is off topic, but NBC needs to bring Don Cherry back for their intermission segments.
John Davidson went from the Rangers color guy on MSG (and NBC, maybe?) to becoming the St Louis Blues GM. He's doing a good job. I miss JD though, he was my favorite color guy for hockey.
And i HATE the Rangers.
when I read "Wild", I thought NBC was just going to bring him out to the wilderness and let him run free.
JD was the top analyst with CBS's Olympics, FOX, ABC, NBC, and MSG Network. He was the best and I HATE the Rangers too.
The guys over at stayclassy.net think Pierre McGuire is the best candidate for the Wild!
It's time for the Wild to welcome home Gordon Bombay.
