Ernie Harwell Says Goodbye To Detroit, Major League Baseball
Thursday, September 17, 2009
Tigers' announcer, Ernie Harwell, is a Baseball institution, so it came with great sadness that the HOFer has incurable Bile Duct Cancer. Harwell doesn't know how long he is to this Earth, but he's not letting that stop him from enjoying his last few days. Ernie talked to the Tigers crowd before last night's game, and here's the tribute video that was shown and his speech....
It's amazing this day in age, when someone works/plays for the same team, for as long as Ernie did. I can't imagine what it feels like to be him right now, but it certainly has to help to know that you've touched so many lives over the years.

Simply put the best baseball broadcaster to ever live and yes that includes Vin Scully. When Bo Schembechler did the unthinkable and had him fired after the 1991 season. I prayed that the Red Sox would would see this opening and dump that god awful Joe Castiglione and hire Ernie.
One of the best hires ESPN made was when they hired Harwell to broadcast some playoff games. His call of game 5 of the Mariners vs. Yankees series was as good a call you would ever hear.
Great job by the Tigers organization there. I mean if you are a fan of the history of baseball you have to be a fan of Harwell. He is one of those few announcers where you can just say, "He is the Detroit Tigers". Thanks for posting it.
Someone held up a sign during a pan of the crowd that said, "A Way a Person Should Be."
Ernie Harwell fits that to a "T."
For those of you who were unable to attend Mitch Albom's book release (Have a Little Faith) event at the Fox, here is a great video of Mitch's interview with Ernie Harwell. I swear, that voice is one-of-a-kind. If we were playing "Name That Tune" I think most of us could name Ernie Harwell's voice in one note!
Harwell fans, you'll love this!

Enjoy!
I'm not even a Tigers fan, but I have huge respect for Mr. Harwell. And I'm not ashamed to admit this video made me cry.
