Doug Gottlieb Knows How To Call The End Of A Game

Thursday, February 26, 2009

I don't know if this was a bet, but following a great win the other night by Texas A&M, Doug Gottlieb had a wonderful call to end the game. You may remember one of the better skits on "The Chappelle Show", being that of the Prince story as told by Charlie Murphy. Well here is Gottlieb using one of the more famous lines from that story to close out the A&M-Nebraska game....

"Game blouses!"- Doug Gottlieb

Hilarious. As Panthers' announcer, Randy Moller taught us a week or so ago, there's nothing better than throwing in a pop culture reference during an excitement moment. Good one, Douglas.

Player's Dad Now Demanding A Gottlieb Apology

Friday, February 06, 2009

This story is about a week old, but is just now starting to get interesting. During Nebraska's recent loss to Kansas, Cornhusker player Cookie Miller got a little too aggressive with a Jayhawk player, and announcer Doug Gottlieb called him out on it. After a few replays, Gottlieb said Miller was, "acting like a punk," and if you watch the video, I think you'll agree.

Pretty obvious that Miller was just trying to start some s**t there, but not to Mr. Miller, who is searching for an apology from Gottlieb. And after an exchange with Brooks from SbB, it's pretty clear he's not getting one....
“I understand how someone could take it because I used the word ‘punk.’ To be clear,
I did not call Miller a ‘punk’, I said he was ‘acting like a punk’, which in truth assumes that he is not a punk, but that he has temporarily lowered his level of sportsmanship. My job is based in using my own personal knowledge, experience and opinion to analyze each situation. This was my analysis.”
There's a big difference between calling a person a punk, and saying they are "acting like" one. I can respect Big Cookie's defense of his son, but he has to understand that Gottlieb wasn't bashing his son's overall character, but rather his actions in that one moment.

About That USA Today Piece On Doug Gottlieb

Thursday, February 28, 2008

So USA Today did an piece on ESPN's Doug Gottlieb that kind of blew my mind. He and Bob Wischusen let the paper follow him around for a week or so and here are some of the highlights....

- There are days when he's on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNEWS, ESPNU, ESPN.com and ESPN Radio. In between are appearances — via cellphone — on other radio shows, calls he makes while checking into a hotel, eating lunch, waiting in line for coffee or driving home.

-"Anybody ever had a bulldog?" he asks while a mascot performs during a timeout in another game. "Most gaseous dog ever, right?"

-His recall so acute that ESPN College GameDay host Scott Reiss and ESPN "bracketologist" Joe Lunardi refer to him as "Rain Man."

-"I am the way I am because I would watch guys (while growing up) and think, 'Why don't they just say what they are really thinking?'"

- "Sometimes I badly strive not to come across as the know-it-all," he says. "And yet I'm in a job in which you are supposed to be a know-it-all. How do you relate what is happening without coming off as the pain-in-the-(rear) know-it-all."
I don't know how and when the USA Today became ESPN The Newspaper, but these pieces illustrate how perfectly the ESPN PR machine operates. How do they get the largest paper in the Country to do a 1,600 word feature story on an analyst!? And not even a top-tier analyst (even though he should be). It's just amazing what that paper does for ESPN.

Other than that it's a pretty good read if you're an announcing nerd like me.

Gottlieb Will Hear Your Taunts Then Destroy You

Friday, December 07, 2007

I have no idea what started this, but it sure escalated quickly. Doug Gottlieb was on a Scout.com chat when heckling caused him to lose it just a bit....

Mike Indiana: How did your mediocre basketball career prepare you for a mediocre broadcasting career?
Doug Gottlieb: (4:04 PM ET ) So your mediocre life can prepare you for a mediocre afterlife...and by the way, which one of us works for ESPN... hey and next time...when I you say 30 minutes or less....get here on time with my pizza.
John (Notre Dame): Doug, I lost my credit card, where were you last night?
SportsNation Doug Gottlieb: (4:27 PM ET ) Ask your mom.
Johns Mom (Notre Dame): GOTTLIEB I KNOW YOU STOLE MY SON'S CREDIT CARD!
SportsNation Doug Gottlieb: (4:34 PM ET ) Ten years ago I made a mistake...and payed for it...18 years ago YOU WERE your parents mistake and they are still paying for it.
The chatters are obviously referring to Doug Gottlieb's short stint at Notre Dame where he stole a roommate's credit card and charged $900 to it, but I'm not really sure what set them off. Far be it from me to call anything out of bounds, but I think both Doug and the chatters just need to chill out. It's also a shame something someone did as a kid still comes back to haunt them.

Heaven forbid you folks find out some of the stuff I did in College.
