Screening Fail On ESPN2 Interactive Tuesday (Deadspin)

ESPN continues to plow ahead with the silly "Interactive Tuesday" shenanigans, and each Tuesday you can tell that it's a work in progress. Last night's edition was during the BC-MD (not a word about the game you commenters!) and during the second half, the "Leader" decided to put up this awesome poll! Via Mister Irrelevant....



I'm personally thinking that the Big East will get two teams in the tourney, the ACC one, the Rice Conference one and the Vasquez will be in the N.I.T. just like last year. It's just about intervention time, ESPN. Interactive Tuesday has worn out its welcome. Actually that's not true. It was never welcomed to begin with.

ESPN Interactive Tuesday and Maryland Terrapins Basketball Continue to Suck (Mister Irrelevant)

ESPN first broke out their "Interactive Tuesdays" during College Football, and even though the feature was pretty lame and not widely used, the network is adding it to their Tuesday College Basketball broadcasts. Via ESPN...

On the heels of its successful first college football season, ESPN’s Interactive Tuesdays returns to television and ESPN.com with a schedule of college basketball games. The line-up includes #9 Clemson, #14 Marquette, #22 Villanova and Memphis. Fully integrated ESPN Conversations, polls and Sound Off, which allows fans to upload video commentary, will be available during ESPN’s telecasts and will give college hoops fans an interactive chance to be heard and to connect with each other around the game.

The first Interactive Tuesday featured a college football game on September 30, 2008 (Middle Tennessee at Florida Atlantic): ESPN Conversations (on ESPN.com) during the game generated more than 5,300 comments, nearly three times the comments of an average Friday night college football game; Polls averaged thousands of responses in just two minute spans and Voice of the Fan audio and call-in features – all via ESPN.com and mobile devices – received nearly 5,000 recorded messages, nine of which were aired during the telecast.

I still think the idea is hokey, but if they can get people more people watching because of a shot at 15-minutes of game, then they mind as well try it out for Basketball too. Here's your schedule of games in case you're interested....

ESPN's "Interactive Tuesday" Is Not Very "Active" (Awful Announcing)

I keep forgetting to tune in for Tuesday night Football on ESPN, but I know now that it's a must watch every single week. Last night Rece Davis, Mark May and Lou Holtz were on the call of the Houston-Marshall game and witnessed one of the worst Sports injuries ever.

For some reason, a douchebag employee at Marshall decided to park a random cart right behind the endzone and Houston Receiver Patrick Edwards ran straight into the thing. You don't notice it at first, but you see just how bad the injury is during the replay....

Well how'd that sit with your lunch? I love how Lou is wondering WHAT is in the carts, and not WHY the damn things are there in the first place.

I've had the opportunity to meet Bill Cosby at a track event in Philly (The Penn Relays) two times in my life and he couldn't have been a nicer guy. Which is why I'm not going to make fun of him in this spot, but ummm....yeah. Here he is intro'ing last night's ESPN College Football game between Temple and Ohio U....

The Ohio Chitlin Legs? Really??? Okay then. Oh and I have to say this again...."Interactive Tuesday" is off the charts on the train-wreckability scale. I'll have more on that later, but set yourself a reminder right now to watch it next week.

I don't know how many people caught last night's thrilling victory by Middle Tennesse State over Florida Atlantic on ESPN2, but a new feature was debuted called "Interactive Tuesday". There were video clips, emails, soundbytes, votes and scrolling messages, and announcers Todd Harris and Ray Bentley constantly highlighted them throughout the game. There was only one small problem, apparently they were unedited before being displayed and some of the more asinine moments were caught by Complain In Vain....

(1) First, we saw the following message scroll atop our screen from a watcher named Landry Arnett: “sec title game: bama and lsu forget florida who loses to ole miss.” So, Landry had to take the time to sit down at his computer and write this, but not once consider is that is even a possibility? Seriously, there is 0% chance that these two teams could meet in the SEC title. None, nada. LSU is in the SEC West, Alabama is in the SEC West.

(2) Next, another message scrolls atop the screen. This one is not quite so offensive, but we do appreciate misuse of the English language. This was from texaswinbig12: “I think that Texas is a very good team this year even better then Bama.”

In the end, Middle Tennessee (nicknamed the Blue Raiders) won on a pretty exciting Hail Mary play as time expired. Just after the 32-yard game-winning touchdown pass was brought down by the receiver, Harris exclaims, “And the Blue Raiders snatch defeat from…[trails off]” then comes back with “Blue Raiders win!”

All hilarious moments, but nothing was better than the voting process. At multiple times throughout the night, both Harris and Bentley tried to use results from polls to add excitement, but when only 1,338 people vote on a poll that was posted in the second quarter....it's probably not the best idea to highlight that at the end of the game....


It seems like a fun idea in theory, and maybe ESPN is testing it out on lesser viewed games first, but they might want to work out some of the kinks before trying it again. Either that or just lie about the number of voters at the end of the night. That's just embarrassing.
