NFL Comes Up With New Marketing Campaign For 2008 Season

Wednesday, March 12, 2008

I don't know whether it's the lack of advertising around their campaigns, but I couldn't tell you any of the past NFL marketing slogans. Quick, what was last years? Too slow..."Who wants it more?". Yeah I didn't remember either. Well Sports Business Daily has gotten it's hands on this years slogan and I'm pretty sure this one isn't going to stick either....

“Believe In Now” is the seasonlong theme for the NFL’s 2008 NFL campaign. The league introduced the marketing platform, along with the logo for Super Bowl XLIII, to about 300 licensees, team officials and retailers who gathered at Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., last week for the sixth annual summit of “hard lines,” or nonapparel, licensees.

With a Super Bowl not decided until the final minute, last season’s “Who Wants It More?” line worked so well that there was some sentiment to keeping it, said Jaime Weston, the league’s director of brand management and integration marketing and sales. “But we decided to go with something new that focused on the emotion and passion of the NFL while dialing up the sense of urgency,” Weston said. “We want fans to feel like they can’t miss a moment, because there might be a ‘now’ moment at any time during the season.”
The article (I'd link but it's a subscription) says that the Madden video game and NBC both used the "Who Wants It More?" last year, but you could have fooled me. Anybody have any insight as to why I remember every NBA slogan since I was born but couldn't name an NFL one to save my life? Well besides the fact that the NBA shoves it down your throat every chance it gets.

Oh and are we in agreement that the Super Bowl XLIII logo is the worst logo ever created?

ESPN Tries To Coin A Clever New Term For February Slate Of Women's CBB Games

Wednesday, February 06, 2008

I always thought March Madness was simple and a perfect moniker for the Month long Championship run and the Sweet Sixteen has a nice ring to it as well. Then people started trying to name other things in the same vein....The Frozen Four (okay, i'll let that one slide), the Elite Eight (same), and etc. Naming things like this has kind of jumped the shark if you ask me.

Well ESPN is trying to coin another one like those above......February Frenzy (seriously)....

February Frenzy features a total of 16 teams (11 of which appeared in the 2007 NCAA Tournament), including Kay Yow’s N.C. State squad hosting Boston College during the 4 p.m. block. The eight games will be regionalized throughout the country with frequent switches to and updates from the other games as action dictates. In the16 home markets of the competing teams, ESPN2 will start and remain with the game of local interest. ESPN360.com, ESPN’s broadband digital sports network, will offer every game in its entirety.

In addition, ESPN2’s Big Monday telecast on the next day, Monday, Feb. 11, will also serve as a platform to support the initiative. The prime-time game-of-the-week for women’s college basketball will feature a rematch of last year’s National Championship contest, #7 Rutgers at #2 Tennessee at 7 p.m. Mark Jones, Carolyn Peck and Rebecca Lobo will call the game live from Knoxville.
Okay, whoever greenlit that needs to be fired. First off, the last thing I think about when I think about Women's Basketball is frenzy....wait come to think of it, with all of the missed shots and scrums on the floor that's actually a perfect name. I take it back.

I kid I kid. It's for charity so that can't be a bad thing. Here are the games and announcers if you care about that sort of thing....

Februaray 10th- ESPN2/ESPN360.com

2 p.m.: #21 Georgia at #8 LSU- Mark Jones and Carolyn Peck
East Carolina at UTEP- Lou Canellis and Nancy Lieberman
#16 Oklahoma State at Nebraska- Pam Ward and Brenda VanLengen
#15 Pittsburgh at #17 Notre Dame- Bob Picozzi and Fran Frashcilla

4 p.m.: Boston College at N.C. State- Beth Mowins and Jimmy Dykes
#19 Ohio State at Wisconsin- Dave Barnett and Stephen Bardo

NBC Unveils Super Bowl XLIII Logo

Monday, February 04, 2008

Hey what better time to unveil then the day after the previous Super Bowl. This is the logo for Super Bowl 43 and it really looks like my cousin drew it in a coloring book. Via SBD....

The NFL tonight will debut the official logo of Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa as part of an on-air promotional announcement highlighting NBC's coverage of the game. The logo features an abstract representation of Raymond James Stadium, with a star on each side of the logo representing the AFC and NFC. It will be the first official Super Bowl logo to use the color green, with blue and green hues designed to reflect the natural elements of Tampa Bay.
Natural elements of Tampa? The where are the drunk NASCAR Fans and strippers??? I kid I kid. Hopefully I can make it back to Tampa (one of my six Spring Break's was spent there...or in Ybor actually, but close enough) for next year's SB.

In all actuality the should have put some cannons or something on that logo. Make it a true representation of Ray James Stadium.

The NFL Debuts New Logo That Looks Exactly Like The Old One

Thursday, August 30, 2007

Just look at those radical changes I mean the blue....the blue is just darker. And that football standing up and looking so proud.

The league is creating a leaner, meaner version of the iconic logo that will debut at the NFL draft in April, 2008. The revamped shield will be slightly taller and thinner, with a new football, fewer stars and darker colors, says Lisa Baird, the NFL's senior vice president of marketing. The redesign marks the first changes to the shield since 1980.

At the NFL's annual meeting this spring, commissioner Roger Goodell talked about the NFL Shield as the "envy of the sports world." The league has been careful to make an "evolutionary, not a radical change," says Baird.
I disagree completely Ms. Baird! Less stars is radical as it can get. And the reason for less stars on the logo?

"We took one out for each of our fallen homeys of the past year. Vick, Tank, Pacman, and Rhodes just to name a few. We may have to go back to the drawing board with the announcement of Frostee's suspension today though."- Lisa Baird*
