Roger Millions Uses Interesting Vocabulary Following A Flub On Live TV

Friday, April 17, 2009

Roger Millions is a reporter for Rogers Sportsnet in Canada, and while doing a piece on the Calgary Flames, he accidentally let a heck of a phrase slip out. Millions thought he was being taped, and when he botched a line, he decided to drop "cocksucker" on the viewing audience. Take a look (obviously NSFW)....

Wow. Now that certainly was a "blooper", now wasn't it?

This Week In Odd CFL TD Celebrations

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

Back at the beginning of September, it was Toronto Argos receiver Arland Bruce spending five minutes trying to dig a Spiderman mask out of his jock. Well today we've got an even better CFL TD celebration from our neighbors to the north. The Winnepeg Blue Bombers decide to break out into a game of Duck-Duck-Goose this past Friday! Via LBS and Meaningful Collateral....

The best thing that came out of this clip is that both the TSN announcer, and ESPN's Stan Verrett (when it was on Sports Center's Top 10), apparently have no idea what "Duck, Duck, Goose" is. Via Watchdog....
Stan Verrett, the official SportsCenter anchor of WatchDog Nation, admitted on the late show last night that he never had heard of the game "Duck, Duck, Goose" until Friday.

(Canadian Football Leaguers were playing it as part of an end zone celebration.)

Sure, that's shocking, but I admire Stan's honesty and was inspired to admit to my own tale of a childhood standard that I never had heard of until well into adulthood:

S'mores? Was unaware of their existence until Mrs. WatchDog introduced them to me in my mid-30s.
Very very interesting, Neil. Thanks for sharing! Not knowing what a smore is makes sense because that's specific to certain areas, but I don't know how you could go through life without playing "DDG". I'm trying to think of something that I wasn't aware of until later in life, but I can't come up with anything. If you have an interesting one feel free to share it in the comments.

Today In Lame Touchdown Celebrations

Wednesday, September 03, 2008

I'm not one to pick on Canada like others do, but this has to be the lamest TD celebration ever thought up. In the heated battle between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Toronto Argonauts, receiver Arland Bruce decided to bring out a prop following a touchdown in the second quarter of the Monday night game....

A Spiderman mask? At least the Chad Johnson "HOF Jacket" celebration made a bit of sense. This dude just ran a six yard out and then spent 5 minutes trying to dig a mask out of his jock. Lame. The Tiger-Cat fans stepped it up though....
Stubler wanted the CFL to fine the Ticats for another incident, which he said involved a fan throwing a water balloon filled with beer at one of his players. Running back Dominique Dorsey was not injured when the object struck his helmet in the dying minutes of the fourth quarter.

“I don’t mind the crowds, but you can’t throw stuff,” Stubler said on Monday. “It’s become de rigueur around here. I went down and watch a [Toronto FC] game, and people were throwing stuff at the guy in the corner. I’m not a soccer fan, but it seems to me like that’s wrong.”

Skydome Gets Awesome For A Night

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

I always wondered if people went to the Renaissance Hotel in Sky Dome, or whatever it's called these days, for a little bit of exhibitionism and I think we now have that answer....

Not only are the Blue Jays wearing their baby blues on Fridays, but the Rogers Centre also became Exhibition Stadium this weekend, if only for a few minutes.

To the delight of some fans, a brazen blond enjoyed some of Saturday's game against the Yankees in an outfield hotel suite wearing nothing but a thong and a smile.

Just before 4 p.m., in the seventh inning, Sun photographer Dave Abel caught pictures of the woman leaning up against the glass in a suite next to the Jumbotron.

"The Jumbotron videographer told me I might want to look at the suite to the left of the screen, so I looked up, and there she was," Abel said. "You don't see that every day at a Blue Jays game.

Stadium officials quickly dealt with the nude woman (much to the chagrin of everyone with binonculars) and stopped her shenanigans without a scene. I really tried to get a better picture too, but that's the only one out there right now. I love the nonchalant nature of it too. We're just talking about the market...la la la la la. Nothing to see here.

Canadian Publication Profiles ESPN's Dan Shulman

Thursday, July 03, 2008

I know there are people who both like and hate Dan Shulman around these parts (just like every announcer), but I honestly think he's the best thing ESPN has in their stable of broadcasters. He's funny, concise, works well with others and most importantly knows the game he's calling....and he calls a lot of them. From Toronto's Post City Mag via My Hog Town....

While not exactly Willie Loman, Shulman spends more time on the road than any other announcer in the biz. Shulman estimates he does close to 120 games a year, and as no NCAA and only a handful of NBA or MLB games happen in Toronto, every game is a road game.

For now, Shulman’s hoops duties are over. As the NBA playoffs chug to their conclusion, he’ll shift back to baseball where he calls Monday night MLB games for ESPN.

It’s a different game than basketball. The pace is slower, and it requires much more informative chit- chat to pass the time between pitches, but Shulman makes the transition look seamless, thanks to his time with the Jays.

“On my first play-by-play job back in 1995, Buck Martinez was my partner, and we envisioned a good broadcast as two guys sitting in a bar talking about baseball. I’ve always tried to be very conversational,” he says.
It's easy to say what he and Martinez did ahead of time, but to pull it without being annoying and overbearing (like most people at a bar) is pretty impressive. Again, if you know the game and you don't try to make it about yourself people will take notice. You may not get the accolades, or the love/hate response from the masses, but you'll definitely get respect. The rest well come in time.

Sidney Crosby's Agent Now Has An Issue With CBC

Friday, June 06, 2008

I passed along a story last week that Canadians were upset with the apparent Sidney Crosby shunning that was taking place during the Stanley Cup Finals and apparently Crosby's management has contacted the network about it. Via Globe and Mail....

At the conclusion of the deciding game of the Stanley Cup final on Wednesday, Sidney Crosby's agent, Pat Brisson, huddled with Scott Moore, the head of CBC Sports, at Pittsburgh's Mellon Arena.

The subject was Hockey Night in Canada's coverage or — from the point of view of Brisson and others — the peculiar coverage of Crosby in the NHL final series.

The Pittsburgh Penguins' 20-year-old captain was largely ignored by Hockey Night host Ron MacLean and commentator Don Cherry, although MacLean did report on Wednesday before Game 6 that Crosby was the leading scorer of the playoffs. And Cherry aired a piece on Coach's Corner, the thrust of which was referees were allowing Crosby to be fouled because he was known as a diver in his rookie season.

Apparently, the conversation between Brisson and Moore was amicable, but inconclusive.
I'm not really versed in things Canadian but it's really amazing that one of Canada's own would be ignored or boycotted because of something that happened when he was in Junior Hockey. Don Cherry is seriously good at holding grudges.

CBC should examine Cherry-picking coverage (Globe and Mail)

ESPN Canada?

Tuesday, April 01, 2008

Found this story in the Toronto Globe and Mail and thought I'd pass it on for our good friends in the Great White North. ESPN might have been looking to add a Canadian channel to it's repotoire, but it looks like the possibility of it happening is slim to none....

Despite pressure from cable companies to open up the Canadian market to more foreign content, the likelihood of ESPN coming into the country is virtually zero, executives said yesterday.

"We've said let in the American channels unless they threaten the economic viability of the Canadian channel," he said. "If they could put a Canadian channel under and drive them out of business, then we would say don't let them in."

ESPN would represent competition to Canadian sports channels, including Rogers-owned Sportsnet. TSN would be most severely hit by ESPN's entry into the market. They're both national services that carry a wide selection of high-end programming, some of it the same.
The collection of Canadian channels own the rights to just about every Sport in the Country, but ESPN definitely has the funds to wrestle them away. For the time being it appears you're safe Canada. Well I guess you still have to deal with Berman when he picks up his deux deux deuxs.

What In The World Is Canadian Ketchup?

Our friends up north are going to have to help me with this clip. First PBPer Steve Martin says that the Raptors defense is like "Canadian Ketchup", then sideliner Stephanie Ready trys to explain to the booth that she is a fan of it. Does anyone have any idea what they're talking about?

This seems like a bet between Bobcats announcers Steve Martin and Henry Williams on which one could convince Steph to talk about a fake product.

CBC To Air Don Cherry Made For TV Movie

Wednesday, March 26, 2008

Everyone get your acting resumes ready. If you are a 50 year old gentleman with ghost white hair and beard and wear some of the most ridiculous outfits ever, has CBC got the role for you!

There will be some loud jackets to fill when the CBC starts casting its latest made-for-TV movie: the Don Cherry story.

"We're trying to find out if Brad Pitt can play the leading role," jokes the movie's protagonist. "Maybe George Clooney could play me in the later years."

Pitt would actually be more appropriate since the two-part movie, written by Cherry's son Tim, deals mostly with the Coach's Corner star's early life in hockey's minor leagues. In fact, it will end when Cherry meets Ron MacLean, 24 years ago.

The movie is still in the development stages, with the younger Cherry's script being massaged by award-winning writer Paul Quarrington. Once CBC gives it the green light, shooting is expected to start this summer with next spring's Stanley Cup playoffs the target launch date.
I'm not exactly sure how you massage a script, and if it's similar to massaging a prostate, but only good things can come of this.

I'm Pretty Sure Your Foot Is Never Supposed To Touch Your Shoulder

Monday, November 26, 2007

This is the Manitoba Bison's Matt Henry reeling off an impressive run in the Vanier Cup. The Cup is basically the BCS of Canada and Henry was a huge part of the Bison's win Saturday.

Too bad he couldn't finish the game after his leg did not finish this play the way it started.....

Good lord that was nasty. Time for dinner!

That's It I'm Moving To Canada!

Thursday, October 25, 2007

Via reader WC from Canada comes the most depressing news of the day. They have a better Health Care system than us, and now they've rid themselves of Joe Buck. Seriously.....

Rogers Sportsnet has picked up the MLB International feed for the World Series. Why is this so good? No Buck and McCarver! I was ready to watch the game with the sound off and the radio turned up to listen to Morgan/Miller when I realized I didn't have to listen to those 2 ass clowns call another Red Sox game. The International feed uses ESPN's Dave O'Brien and Rick Sutcliffe which is 10 times better than the Fox clowns.
O'Brien and Sutcliffe isn't THAT much better, but WC is right.....I would take them over Tim and Joe in a heartbeat. Plus there's the added bonus that Rick Sutcliffe could do the broadcast hammered. Dammit Canada! As if you couldn't hate those Canucks even more. They've bested us once again. I'm telling you to keep your eye on them Michigan.

Screw it.....I'm moving to Saskatoon and becoming a Saskatchewan Roughriders fan.

(Thanks to WC for sending that in.)

Ashley Could Go All The Way!

Tuesday, August 28, 2007

God, this is the funniest thing I've possibly ever seen. It works on so many levels. 1) The scary Trojan mascot trying to help her. 2) The Announcer yelling directions at her. 3) The fact that they thought someone running 80 yards blindfolded was a good idea. 4) She's, ummm...hefty. 5), and most importantly.....The crowd's reaction at the end.

Wait for it.....WAIT FOR IT! BAM!!!

Man I cannot stop laughing. Sorry Ashley.

UPDATE: This video is equal as funny and very disturbing. That Steve Berman talks too much.
