Wait, You Can't Say The Word Pissed On Television?
Monday, February 25, 2008
Obviously there's a ton of words you can't say on TV, but I wouldn't think "pissed" is one of them. Well after Scott Van Pelt used it on Saturday's late edition of Sports Center and issued an apology I guess it actually is a bad word now....
Everyone at ESPN seems to be walking on egg shells these days, and that's kind of a shame. I guess blurred the line so much that you mind as well apologize if you say the slightest thing controversial.

Dude.
You ever hear of George Carlin?
Piss is one of the seven dirty words.
Weak. Next thing you know is they won't be able to joke about date rape and abortions on Sportscenter. This country sucks.
Janet Jackson's nipple continues to haunt live TV.
That was more of a "I'm going to be safe and not have to have a meeting with the higher ups later" than it was ESPN governing speech. But yes, you should avoid saying "pissed" on worldwide television, just to be safe. I enjoyed Buccigross calling for the apology, half in jest, half serious - it was both funny and efficient.
It's shit like this that has driven Stern and O & A to terrestrial radio, and Don Geronimo into early retirement(he's as much said so himself). You're not even allowed to use the phrase "wet dream"(if you do, "wet" gets bleeped out), or say "masturbate". I hate the Puritanical attitudes that permeate the TV and radio business in recent years. George Orwell was right...
Oops..that should be satellite, not terrestrial, radio.
SVP says it all the time on Tirico's radio show. Guess the brass don't listen to that.
Drexler says it all the time on Rockets' broadcasts on our local FSN affiliate.
As a former radio DJ, I happen to know the rule here as it applies to the FCC. You can say "pissed" as in "so-and-so is very pissed off." But you cannot say "I took a piss on so-and-so's face." ESPN is very weak.
