World Series Game Five Live Blog: Round Two
Wednesday, October 29, 2008
Alrighty, we're trying this thing again folks. The game gets underway after the Barack Obama commercial and we're going strong for 3 and a half innings. Phils win, that's all she wrote.....Rays win, we're going back to Tampa for Game Six (presumably tomorrow). It's Game Five 2.0 on Fox.....NEXT!
The cheesy Oscar-like music is playing so that means just one thing, we're live from Philly! Joe Buck cues the intro with your highlights from the other night and we get to hear the word "hydroplaning" once again.
The fact that a POS infomercial delayed the start of a World Series game is a travesty. I could careless if it was Obama or McCain, but it's a shame a fricking political campaign commercial takes over America's pasttime. (Via Brett)
As someone mentioned in the pregame post, it didn't technically delay it. It really just got rid of the Fox Pregame show with Jeanne Zelasko. Ultimately that's not a bad thing. Chris Meyers is all decked out tonight with gloves and a gigantic coat. Nice look.
Let's get this thing (re)started. 25 years since Philly won a championship. Let's hope that drought ends now. (Via JFein)
Rain Delay: Forty Two Hours, Forty Six minutes. (Via James Craven)
Bottom of the Sixth:
Geoff Jenkins will be your pinch hitter and Ryan Madson will be coming into the game in the seventh for the Phils. David Price looks to be getting ready to warmup for the Rays. Annnnnnnd we're underway with ball one to Jenkins. Full count....JENKINS CRUSHES ONE OFF THE WALL! He's into second with a leadoff double. Rollins up....bunt....and a perfect one. Jenkins to third. Werth is your batter now and he gets up in the count 2 and 0.
"On a double, it will be louder." - Tim McCarver after Jenkins hit a double after McCarver said the place would be loud if Jenkins got walked. (Via J)
Pop up.......Iwamura can't get it! Phillies go up 1-0 3-2!!!!
As a prior poster in a prior live thread said best, "If we win, we riot. If we lose, we riot." (Via Jim)
That's all for Balfour as the Rays bring in Howell with Werth on first and Utley coming to the plate. Balfour is fuming in the dugout, as he should be. Chase takes two quick strikes and ends up striking out on a sweeping curve. Howard up and a pickoff attempt has Werth.....NO! He beats out the throw from Pena!!! Good hustle there. Doesn't matter though as Howard pops up to third.
One Hit, One Walk, One Run....3-2 Phillies.
For Fox dugout shots are the baseball equivalent of student bands. (Via Bazooka)
You think Ryan Howard loses "street cred" in Philly for endorsing the Subway cheesesteak instead of a local establishment? (Via Anon)
Yes....yes I do.
Top of the Seventh:
Navarro, Baldelli and Barlett coming up for the Rays. Nav goes down on an inside fastball and that's one out.
Baldelli up.....GONE! Rocco crushes and inside fastball and we're tied again just like that.
Can of spray paint: $5
Designer Sunglasses: $100
World Series directly behind home plate: $1000
Looking like an androgynous oompa-loompa on national television for over 2 hours: priceless
(Via Mr. Earth)
You can watch the game without announcers at MLB.com.
REPEAT: You can watch WITHOUT announcers at MLB.com.
(Via Matt)
That's amazing. Bartlett now lines a single off of Madson and here come those pesky Rays! A bunt moves him over to second and Madson is pulled from the game for JC Romero.
If Price comes in next inning, Joe Maddon should be fired for not knowing how to manage in a NL ballpark. (Via Brett)
Utley can't make the play at first....Bartlett heads for home! He's gunned out by the second baseman. Great play again from Utley and his fake throw might have caused Bartlett to go there.
Bottom of the Seventh:
It's high drama in Game 5 Version 2.0. Ratings be damned, this is the best thing on TV tonight. (Via Jim W.)
I'd argue that "Sons of Anarchy" is, but I'd be lying. It's close though. Burrell, Victorino and Ruiz are your batters. Howell is still on the mound.....Burrell kills one! Way back......off the wall!!! The wind kept in by an inch and slow ass Pat only ends up with a double. Bruntlett pinch runs for the Left Fielder.
I hope McCarver draws another gigantic arrow for us in the stands to show why Burrell's ball stayed in the park. (Mr. Earth)
OH MY GOD!!! BURRELL GOT A HIT!!! I DON'T BELIEVE WHAT I JUST SAW!!!!!! (Via JFein)
That's his first of the Series and Victorino will be batting against Bradford. Victorino misses on the bunt and he'll be swinging away now. He does and grounds out to the right side, moving the runner over. Great hitting there. Feliz up with a runner on third and one out....
SINGLE! Feliz delivers and it's 4-3 Phils!!!
Ruiz up....Sing....OH! Iwamura with a great dive and flip to Bartlett for the force out. Romero stays in the game to hit and grounds out to second. The Phils get the lead back though....4-3....6 outs to go!
McCarver: "The park is called Citizen's Bank Ballpark."
(CUT TO SHOT OF WHOLE PARK)
"If you hit the ball under the Citizen's Bank sign in left field..."(pause)
(NOTICE CITIZEN'S BANK SIGN CLEARLY IN RIGHT CENTER FIELD)
"...you'll hit it....away from the wind..."
(Via Adam)
He is just clueless.
Top of the Eighth:
Crawford up....single up the middle. Doesn't matter though....the King of Double Plays, BJ Upton, erases the hit.
This Game 5, with its roller coaster ride feel is eerily reminiscent of Game 5 of the 1980 NLCS. Ebbs and flows, ups and downs, highs and lows. (Via Jim)
Rocky is a great movie, but don't you think in general the theme is a little played out? C'mon fox, pick another song to play! (Via Anon)
Very much so. Pena up as both Price and Lidge warm up in the pen. Romero can't find the zone and the count is quickly 3 and 0. He follows up with a strike and then gets Pena to line out to left.....3 outs away!
Bottom of the Eight:
It could be just me, but the commercial breaks seem extra long tonight. I wouldn't put it past Fox to try and work some extra advertising in during the shortened night. Price in and the top of the order up for the Phillies. J-Roll tests the wind in left field and loses. One out.
Joe Buck gives us the official "Last Time Philly Won A Championship" jinx and Werth comes to the plate. He's down on strikes and Utley will be your batter. Chase gets on with a walk and Ryan Howard will hit with two outs.
Chris Myers with the William Penn swami angle. Comcast may have put Penn on top of their building, but they still can burn in hell in my eyes (and those of millions of others). (Via Jim)
Can a statue be 3 inches tall? (Via Mr. Earth)
I don't think it can, but whatever works right? Utley takes second after a nice jump it's 3-1 to Howard. Fouled off and it's a full count. Philly fans get loud, but Howard strikes out. Here we go Philly....Brad Lidge in....three outs away....
Top of the Ninth:
Enter Sandman....I'm just gonna leave now. News choppers are over Frankford and Cottman Avenues as I speak. (Via James Craven)
Godspeed James....Godspeed. Here it is. Longoria, Navarro and Baldelli to face Lidge.
Any guesses on how Joe Buck is going to ruin the moment if the Phillies finish it off here? (Via Jesse)
Longoria....pops out to Utley. One out. Navarro....singles to right field on a broken bat looper. One out and Perez pinch runs for Dioner. Zobrist is up and Perez steals second! Uh oh....
Zobrist smacks one! Right to Werth!!! Two outs and up strides Eric Hinske representing the go ahead run and he has a runner on second in Perez to drive in. One to go....
1st pitch....fouled down the first baseline. 0 and 1.
2nd pitch....check swing by Hinske....strike! O and 2.
3rd pitch....STRIKE THREE....
THE PHILLIES WIN THE WORLD SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
28 years after their last one they take it in one of the oddest ways possible, but it still counts. Joe Buck wisely lets them and the fans celebrate without his commentary, and it's going to be a long night in the City of Brotherly Love.
I'll have video and some more commentary in a few, but congrats Philadelphia....you certainly deserve it.
Final: Phillies 4 - Rays 3, Philadelphia wins the Series 4-1

bazooka, that's because ABC was hesitant on showing the infomercial, but when they later said they'll do so, Obama's campaign said they didn't have the money allocated for ABC to air the infomercial. Yeah...let's stick to baseball, please!!!
The fact that a POS infomercial delayed the start of a World Series game is a travesty. I could careless if it was Obama or McCain, but it's a shame a fricking political campaign commercial takes over America's pasttime.
Forecast: Winter Approaching
Nice job, FOX.
jim williams...are you ready?
Phillie Phanatic doing his thing in the distance between the two shot of Buck and McCarver. I think the Phanatic would be a fine replacement for either of the two men calling this game.
Oh, and I guess we should thank Obama for sparing us 20 some odd minutes of Jeanne Zelasko.
Rain Delay: Forty Two Hours, Forty Six minutes.
I'm ready for this one, jc. I even have the Phillies guys blasting on the PC...sadly on a 60 second delay, but hey it's all one can do for free.
Barack Obama > Jeanne Zelasko.
Let's get this thing (re)started. 25 years since Philly won a championship. Let's hope that drought ends now.
Ultimately, years from now, people will be saying "I went to a World Series game and a cricket match broke out!" in regards to the length of days it takes to complete this thing.
Geoff Jenkins gets the call and the lumber to meet Balfour. Let's play ball!
I think this might be the most energized a crowd has ever been to start a bottom of the sixth inning.
LET'S GET PSYCHED!!!
I wonder if FOX will do a compare/contrast on how, if at all, the home plate ump's strike zone has been altered from the start of Game 5 to the resumption of Game 5.
Geoff Jenkins, CLUTCH!
Larry Andersen on the Phillies Radio Network is channeling his inner Ron Santo on the air!
"On a double, it will be louder." - Tim McCarver after Jenkins hit a double after McCarver said the place would be loud if Jenkins got walked.
My brain hurts...
With Game 2.0 starting, I think the world waits to see if Philadelphia tear the city apart.
Oh my god...He's (Balfour) Wild!!!
iwea, as a prior poster in a prior live thread said best, "If we win, we riot. If we lose, we riot."
Iwamura went "D'oh!"
How about that!!!
That was charitible scoring for Werth. It should have been E-4, not an RBI single.
Hamels now has a chance at picking up the win if the Phils can hang on!
I'm fucking sick of this chevy Chase DirecTV commerical!
So after every 3rd pitch, we get the dugout reaction shot. That's gonna get real old, even in a short game. Let's have an over/under on dugout shots... I'll say 40
Who cares how it's scored in the scorebook, as long as it's +1 for the Phightin' Phils!!! LOL
Is that old woman behind home plate spray painted red?
You think Ryan Howard loses "street cred" in Philly for endorsing the Subway cheesesteak instead of a local establishment?
For Fox dugout shots are the baseball equivalent of student bands.
@anon: He loses a little cred with every strikeout and gains it back with every homerun.
@Bazooka Jones:
BA-ZING!
And again, the big ticket hitters for the Phils with each swing and miss are keeping Tampa's chances alive.
Werth getting gutsy there.
And those chances, jim willaims, are slim and none.
"Utley, rather Werth, takes off too soon and he steals second." - a very confused Joe Buck.
What? No "Gonna Fly Now"?
Holy guacamole, FOX must be listening to us!
Oh, shit. not "Saved By Zero" again!
Zero is NOPT my fucking hero!
Or is that a man?
Can of spray paint: $5

World Series directly behind home plate: $1000
Looking like an androgynous oompa-loompa on national television for over 2 hours: priceless
With apologies to KO, this is the real Countdown!
Mr. Earth:
Oompa-Loompa, Doopity Doo
I have a World Series Trophy for you...
You can watch the game without announcers at MLB.com.
REPEAT:
You can watch WITHOUT announcers at MLB.com.
I, like most of America, barely care to watch, but this discovery has made my day.
Unbelievable! Rocco Bleepin' Baldelli.
Right up there with Joe Motherfucking Carter and mitch motherfuckign Williams.
No one said this was going to be easy. It never is easy for Philadelphia.
If Price comes in next inning, Joe Maddon should be fired for not knowing how to manage in a NL ballpark.
I've waited 25 years for a title in Philadelphia...and I want to get it done tonight!
I have a feeling Wilbon's half hearted prediction on PTI will be true. We're going sixteen, people, lol!
It's high drama in Game 5 Version 2.0. Ratings be damned, this is the best thing on TV tonight.
@ Jim Williams: I couldn't have said it better myself.
Talk about an eventful first inning!
Wow! What a play by Utley to deke out Bartlett!
MEAT AT THE PLATE! Great defensive awareness by Utley!
FOX is really making me hate Tom Petty...thanks Murdoch!
What kind of emphatic call was that by the ump?
@ Jim Williams: I actually imagine that this will be a high rated game. a). Because it's been highly, highly publicized everywhere, b). because it's a shortened game and people who don't like sitting through 3 hours of baseball can enjoy this, and c). Obama was just on, and he probably drew lots of people.
If the Phillies win this game tonight, Utley's deke will be the turning point.
mr. earth, I'm thinking the ump didn't know if Ruiz held onto the ball, and he wanted to make sure he still had the ball in his mitt.
Just a (high school/community college) play by play man's opinion, your mileage may vary.
"Those who are tardy get no fruitcup!"
Burrell's up. Howell will get one easy out at least.
If any one was wondering about Patrick Edwards, the Houston WR that ran into the cart last night, he suffered a compound fracture, and has a rod in his lower leg now.
Plus his momma is thinking about suing.
Not so fast, jfein!
OH MY GOD!!! BURRELL GOT A HIT!!! I DON'T BELIEVE WHAT I JUST SAW!!!!!!
Great move, to go for a pinch runner.
Did they have the 7th inning stretch?
jim williams, Lee Corso just called.
He wants his catchphrase back!
I hope McCarver draws another gigantic arrow for us in the stands to show why Burrell's ball stayed in the park.
jfein, your last comment at 9:12...well, "that's a winner!"
Durbin's warming up? Eh, I'm not so sure I want so see Durbin at any point.
Now, what's Maddon bitching about? Someone stole his pocket protector?
Momentum has a stanrge way of making things go crazy go nuts...
Sacrifice is a keeper.
"In a postseason with important and good at-bats for the Phillies" - Joe Buck
Most postseason at bats for all teams are important.
McCarver: "The park is called Citizen's Bank Ballpark."
CUT TO SHOT OF WHOLE PARK
"If you hit the ball under the Citizen's Bank sign in left field..."(pause)
NOTICE CITIZEN'S BANK SIGN CLEARLY IN RIGHT CENTER FIELD
"...you'll hit it....away from the wind..."
There we go!
VOTE FOR PEDRO! VOTE FOR PEDRO!
Stall tactics there from the Rays.
The most dangerous hitter in the lineup is up...and yes, I do mean Carlos Ruiz!
So, McCarver was pretty much proven wrong again.
Basically, it worked like a sacrifice and Felix drove in the run. I love when ol' Timmy is wrong.
Iwamura with a web gem, gotta give props to him for that one.
Iwamura taketh away...and Iwamura giveth.
Ask for Rocky, and they give you Rocky...or something.
SIX MORE OUTS AND THE CURSE IS OVER!
Rocky is a great movie, but don't you think in general the theme is a little played out? C'mon fox, pick another song to play!
Philadelphia freedom by Elton john is always good...
This Game 5, with its roller coaster ride feel is eerily reminiscent of Game 5 of the 1980 NLCS. Ebbs and flows, ups and downs, highs and lows.
The only difference is that Game 5 of the 1980 NLCS was played in a dome.
Well yeah, jc, I'm just going on the momentum swings and the boundless drama in place.
6...4...3!!!
Double play! The Phils are 4 outs away! 4 OUTS AWAY!!!
The only question left is who gets the Chevy Traverse as MVP if it ends tonight. I say Hamels.
Make it 3 outs! Let's get some insurance for Lidge!!!
McCarver was right about the sign thing. There is obviously a sign in left field, that he pointed out and unerlined.
Anon- I thought so too, but I think he got his signs confused. Plus the one in left looks like it's 40 stories tall. It would take a heck of a homerun to make his point valid.
I'd leave Romero in for the 9th. He's pretty special and has it going, why change? Even with his walks that appear out of nowhere...
Dan Baker: "These changes...for the Fishies..."
Who are they trying to kid? No kid's first word is "No."
"He had never won a game in any Major League season."
@ Mr. Earth: There's no way the Phils won't put in Lidge for the bottom of the 9th.
AA, they're probably putting make dos on the air to those who blew their money on ads that never saw the light of intended day.
Chris Myers with the William Penn swami angle.
Comcast may have put Penn on top of their building, but they still can burn in hell in my eyes (and those of millions of others).
Can a statue be 3 inches tall?
Thank you Chris for saying what everybody in Philadelphia already knows.
Enter Sandman...
If there's a baseball god, Howard will go deep.
I'm just gonna leave now. News choppers are over Frankford and Cottman Avenues as I speak.
Forget about that last comment of mine...
Here we go. Lidge on the mound in the top of the 9th with the Phils up by 1. I wasn't alive in 83, so it's safe to say that I've been waiting for this moment all my life.
Don't know why but I have a feeling Lidge is going to flashback to Pujols a few years ago in the NLCS and he's going to blow this one. I'm officially on record.
That's one...
Any guesses on how Joe Buck is going to ruin the moment if the Phillies finish it off here?
I'm going to predict Joe Buck's call.
Same as 2006.
"For the first time in 28 years, the Phillies have won the World Series."
Just for posterity's sake.
That's two...
How fast do you think Joe Buck will be out of Philadelphia after this game.
How much do you think Buck will talk about the Rays great year after the game?
What a weak final call by Buck.
Ladies and gentlemen, the curse is over!
How many arrests tonight?
Good for the Phillies. They've got some cool guys on that team. And they're not the Mets...or the Yankees for that matter.
Buck just said Lidge stayes perfect.
Actually he lost the All-Star game...which is ironic because none of this weather craziness happens and they don't clinch here more than likely if the NL wins that game.
Oh well. GG Philly.
WE DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Big props to Buck/FOX for going with silence for the celebration. Even though I dislike the Phillies, it was great to hear the crowd cheering like mad and watch the celebration without somebody trying to sum up their season.
On to basketball. Maybe I'll see another brawl in the Palace tonight.
I am happy for Jimmy Rollins a fellow Bay Area resident.
Brilliant idea by Bud Selig to postpone the game to make sure kids on the East Coast would be able to watch the end of the game. Very clever of him. That man knows more than he's letting on.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, NO MORE ROCKY!!!!!
Are they booing Bud selig?
Great call by Harry Kalas. Classic.
Although credit to Fox after the weak call by Buck for going completely silent and just letting the crowd and the plethora of replays dictate the emotions of the moment. Great job, it was beautiful.
"Phillies 4 - Rays 3, Philadelphia wins the Series 4-1"
except in Vegas where the Phillies won Game 6 2-1 and they win the series 5-1
(how happy are they - no prolonged lawsuits from angry Rays bettors)
Was that Chris Myers handing out t-shirts during the celebrations?
"We are the Philadelphia Phillies and our first name is Philadelphia."
Hilarious. Nice job confirming that for us.
Hamels wins a 2010 Camaro!! 2010?!? We haven't even had 2009 yet!
Great call by Harry Karas, terrible call by Buck (big shock, I know)
Can I say that this was one of the worst World Series that I've ever watched?
- A Phillies team that couldn't hit with runners in scoring position
- A Rays team that didn't have its best hitters get many hits, hit into waaaay too many double plays, and that pitched so poorly (I have never seen so many leadoff hitters get on)
Congrats to the Phillies, they definitely deserve it, but overall, the series was pretty weak.
A few things....
Did Zelasko say something like "Philly eefia?" or did her mic cut out?
I can't believe she asked Manuel about such a sad in personal subject as his mom's death on an open mic in front of thousands of people. Just tacky.
Sunny in Philadelphia is an f/x show right? Will they ever stop the stupid cross-promotion?
Don't knock the transformers car.
It was mentioned above...it's great that Harry Kalas FINALLY got a chance to call a world champion.
Every possible emotion is going through my body: tears of joy, releashed anguish, exaltation, it's a beautiful thing.
Congrats do indeed go out to the Rays on an incredible season. I know that I did not expect the Rays to represent the AL this year, as I'm sure most people didn't. In a sport where it seems like worst to first stories are rare, the Rays had one and an epic one at that. Congrats Tampa on a great season, but this night belongs to the Fightin' Phila!
i thought the best part of the whole celebration was the fact that they showed all the players reactions when the last out was recorded. smooth, fox
I like to end this with a quote from Frank Edwin McGraw on October 22, 1980:
"For years, Philadelphia has had to take a back seat to New York. Well, New york can stick it...'CAUSE WE'RE NUMBER ONE!"
Tugger, you're up there tonight, and I know you're doing a jig!
Now it's Cleveland's turn to end a Championship drought... (44 years and counting)
Congrats Philly
Congrats Phils, but now I have two WORTHLESS tickets for Game Six (that won't take place obviously) and therefore no date for tomorrow night. BTW, my last date? Nine months ago. Shame that the Rays waited until the WS to play some of their worst ball, but the Phillies are a team that can make anyone look ugly.
What did you expect Buck to say? Something contrived like Jim Nantz? I like the simple, "The Phillies are World Champions." better than something prepared.
Did anyone catch McCarver's comments after Burrell's double? Apparently, he didn't run hard out of the box.
McCarver says, "I know Pat Burrell is married, but you always have to try for extra bases."
WOW.
Really loathed the McCarver garbage during the last at bat (well, ALL the time, actually). It's very possibly the last out of the World series, and he's explaining what a freaking slider is...
Hate.
Him.
Barack's commercial is on NBC, FOX and CBS... But not ABC.
