Arizona Could Be The Dumbest Team Ever
Wednesday, November 19, 2008
If you watched any of the 23-hour College Hoops Marathon on ESPN, you were probably bored through most of the day long extravaganza. It's great that College Basketball is back, but most of the games were blowouts. That was until late last night when Arizona and UAB battled down to the wire and had one of the most bizarre endings you will ever see. College Hoops Journal has the story and the video....
Then, with the score 71-69 after Arizona’s Garland Junkins missed a free throw, Arizona’s Kyle Fogg scrapped up the loose ball and put it in the hoop, tying the game at 71 with :30 seconds remaining. Fogg, not thinking because he was probably told in the timeout before the free throw to foul by the coaches (thinking they’d be down by one or two after the free throw), fouled UAB’s Aaron Johnson....
....So Johnson misses his one-and-one attempt. Jordan Hill grabs the rebound. Arizona calls timeout, sets up a play, and puts it in the hands of Nic Wise. Wise’s shot clanks off the rim with about three seconds to go and UAB’s Paul Delaney (the THIRD) gets the rebound. That’s when Jamelle Horne completely forgets how to play the game of basketball, ignores the fact that the game is tied at 71 and lunges for Delaney III, causing the refs to call an intention foul on Horne, giving UAB two shots and the ball.
That was just flat out wild. I can understand the first foul being a mental error, but how does someone commit a second one like that? Just crazy.

Why do i see Nick Nolte, watching this game film with other assistant coaches. Getting up after watching it and angrily charges into a Arizona frat party and asks both players if they were in on the fix.
Brutal. And to think Arizona used to be a powerhouse.
And now we know why Lute Olson quit...he couldn't handle coaching idiots.
Now this is a situation where not knowing the situation did cost a team the game. Even I, someone who only watches basketball periodically (more so as it gets closer to March Madness), recognized the situation.
There was an undisciplined and unorganized team on the floor and Mike Davis wasn't coaching it?
The hilarious part is that Horne was the first guy to console Fogg after the first foul. Makes you wonder what he said to Fogg ... "Don't worry, frosh. That was dumb, but I'll be dumber tonight, then we'll get those spiffy neon orange and powder blue suits with walking canes and crash a formal charity dinner."
Wathching this live was unbelievable. It was about as bad as forgetting you don't have a time out and calling it and getting hit with a technical foul.
WTF?
Who is the ridiculous color commentator? Keeps trying to blame it on the coaches in a sense for "lack of communication." How about the player is just a fucking dumb ass?
Yeah Anon, I'm with you. I understand the first one, and being caught up in the moment, but the second one was just dumb. Well....they were both dumb, but that's all on a player in that situation.
It's not like Webber and not knowing timeouts.
there will be a lot of that in tucson this season.....wheeeeeee

I'm with Dan. I'm a returned LDS missionary who covered Tucson, Ariz. and one of the hallmarks of the community was the intelligence and athleticism of Lute's players. Perhaps now the Wildcats are morons and this explains why he bolted. That was ridiculous!
Gotta put this one on the coach. If one guy does it... ok, mental error. If two players do it, something is wrong and these players aren't getting the message.
This is like watching your best friend be publicly executed. And then waking up and having a video tape of the execution sent to you on on RSS feed.
I actually think Arizona will be a top half of the Pac10 team this year. Chase, Nic, and Jordan are three of the top 10 players in a league that is otherwise going to be down this year.
watching it live was absolutely one of the most bizarre things i've ever seen.
it's on the coaches, especially after it happened once already. everyone on the floor needs to know the potential situations which can occur in a last second shot.
Not the coaches fault. What in the FUCK@!@@?@?@?@?@@
Donavan McNabb's ghost was on the court.
Actually.. what was the line on this game?
It's on the players. If a pitcher were to intentionally walk in the winning run, he'd be an idiot. If a QB were to spike the ball on 4th down, he'd be a dummy. You shouldn't need to have a sign for "don't ensure the other team's victory". Do you really think with an extra practice, or extra game strategy sessions, the game would have played out any differently?
Coach:"Okay, guys! We're down 87-86. There are 4 seconds left. That means, we have to score BEFORE those 4 seconds run out. If we score one point, we'll tie. If we score 2 or 3 points, we'll be in the lead. Any questions?"
Player #1:"Can I shoot the ball AFTER the clock runs out?"
Coach:"You can, but it won't count."
Player #2:"Can we shoot at the OTHER team's basket? It's a lot closer!"
Coach:"No, those points would count for the other team."
Player #3:"I'm thirsty!"
Coach:"Drink some water."
Player #3:"I can't get this bottle opened"
Coach:"You need to twist the cap in a counter-clockwise motion."
This would have never happened if Lute Olsen were alive.
anonymous..this is the funniest post I have ever read...you have talent..hahaaahaa

Actually that was "Steve" not anon. It's kind of confusing, but the name of the person who made the comment appear below the comment, not above it.
thanks Zack.I guess I'm not much smarter. Lucky I wasn't out on the court, I could have ended up fouling the ref.
all you McNabb haters need to get a life. Donovan is still better than 80% of all starting QBs in the NFL.
this foul proves that idiots can get full scholarships too. maybe the dumbest foul I have even seen.
Put Horne up for the "Darwin award" this season.

The ridiculous commentator someone asked about was Len Elmore, he was the one that kept saying lack of communication....like a college player should have to be told not to tackle somebody with 1 second left in a tied game.....AWFUL ANNOUNCING...
The announcer is the bigger moron. He keeps saying there was a play called that was called off...what the hell is he talking about. What possible scenario would necessitate a foul? They are either tied or in the lead if they make a shot! Why would there ever have been a play called to foul ! ...idiot
Anon - the scenario is this: Arizona's coach told his kid to foul IF THEY MADE A BASKET. This sends UAB to the line, yes, but it also decreases the chances that UAB ties the game. It's a good strategy, when used by people with more than half a working brain.
Also, the commentator was Len Elmore....a man who was, is, and always will be, a first class douchebag.
McNabb plays for Arizona? What?
