Bowl Season Open Thread: The Poinsettia Bowl

Thursday, December 20, 2007

Let's go Bowling! It's the Reason for the Season! Or whatever cheesy intro you can insert here. The fun starts at 9pm and I hope at least a few of you are excited for the first Bowl Game of the 2007 Season.

AA's Pick(s): Navy +8 (They're playing in San Diego and should have a ton of servicemen and women/fans there)
Rams +8

"Where's your ball skills."- Marshall Faulk (Hey I'm watching....why not?)

"Willie Parker's condition seems to be more than a passing thing. They've loaded him on the cart and he would appear headed to the restroom."- Bryant Gumbel

I think my ears my be playing tricks on me, but I'm almost positive that's what Gumbel just said. I'm going to have to post the video for you all to verify that one.

"Marshall I love this guy. Powerful Eyes...hands, speed."- Deion Sanders

What the hell does that even mean and what in the hell is going on with this trio?

"We talked about Willie Parker and how big of a loss he is to this team. You see there he's leading the NFL in rushing and carries too. This is a guy who was worked a lot, last year at 337 calories....carries."- Bryant Gumbel

Okay....I picked the wrong game to live-blog obviously.

I'm telling you this just one more time Deion.....If you name a receiver before the play goes off one more time.....

"You saw him pick up the right puppy and tap it before he went out."- Bryant Gumbel on Issac Bruce getting his feet down in the endzone
"Great job with the feet. I watch Issac, he practices those type of things."- Marshall Faulk

No shit Marshall? You mean like catching the ball and making sure his feet are inbounds??? Who would have thought that a WIDE RECEIVER would practice such things.

Okay I think I'm just making this an open thread and just traking quotes. I feel like flipping back and forth between these two games and the NBA action, so I'm going to just make this a Smorgasbord of quotes.

"Sometimes you've just gotta kick it and take the win." - Deion Sanders, with 37 seconds left in the first half and Pittsburgh up by a touchdown. (Via Erik)

I have no idea what they're even talking about anymore.

After reviewing the last play with 15 sec. left in the half that they gave a catch to Isaac Bruce, Gumbel says "It is hard to tell the reaction of the crowd. That call was greeted with almost as many boos from the Steelers fans." Or maybe the fans were cheering "Bruuucccee" did you think of that Bryant? (Via NK)

"Let's meet the Midshipmen offense."- Rece Davis

Ummm......there's 7 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. Why the hell do they wait so long?

"He's producing....he's very productive."- Deion Sanders on Issac Bruce

Gumbel just called Tony Romo, Tony Romeo when promoting Saturday's game (Via BMroziak)

Annnnnnd.....that's video #5. I'll post them all tomorrow.

Lou Holtz just got very confused after Rece and Mark gave him a compliment. Rece said he was withdrawing his name from consideration for all open coaching jobs. The coach then said, "I don't know what you two are talking about, I'm watching the game. But it leads me to believe my contract's not being renewed."

Hilarious. Annnnnnd they just introduced Utah's starting D at the end of the 3rd Quarter??? That's odd.

Okay, now that was a good game. I can't believe Navy didn't call timeout at the end there and/or run it for the first down, but that's okay. In all honesty the trio of Rece, Mark, and Lou actually did a tremendous job tonight......The NFL Network on the other hand. Horrible.

I've got a ton of videos for tomorrow which may or may not include Jay Bilas having an on-air orgasm during a Duke game. See you then.

deion is without a doubt the worst announcer i have ever heard. at some point he was talking about pocket squares for some reason. sounds like a drunk bill cosby recovering from a series of small strokes

Just annoying as hell...the bitching and moaning about diversity, and we have two black dudes and one sort of black dude.

By the way, Enberg and Denny are really good, REALLY good. I wish they did MNF every week. Denny may be spouting shit, but he is confident in what he says, has BEEN there and Enberg is Jack Buck-like, calling plays and adding where he should.

Just tremendous stuff.

I've got to listen to them one of these nights.

The Navy defense delay was due to the basketball game. That was the second extended Utah possession since the game went from Classic to ESPN (with the Utah offense going on the first possession).

It is weird how Dick Enberg's voice sounds the exact same as it did in 1977.

He has lost nothing when I listen to him on the radio, but when he's on TV, he sounds really old.

Bizarre.

IKE HANDS OF STONE TAYLOR ACTUALLY PICKED A PASS!!! INCREDIBLE!

Any particular reason why the Utah defense was just introduced with three minutes to play in the third quarter?

If I haven't met them yet, I don't really care to meet them at all.

I just got back from watching the game (thanks NFL Network and Comcast!), and, while I'm sure everybody realized this already, I feel compelled to say that was some of the worst announcing I have ever heard. Marshall Faulk never said anything resembling an intelligent thought. At one point he mentioned how the Steelers usually push around opposing defensive lines. Now, if he had watched so much as 30 seconds of game film from this year he would know that's not the case. And he said that after they mentioned that Big Ben has been the second-most sacked QB this year.

Gumbel must have been watching ESPN this morning. Skip Bayless called Romo "Tony Romeo" several times during one segment with Mike Golic. You could tell he was very proud to have come up with such a witty nickname.

Dec 20, 2007, 11:49:00 PM

Bayless has been using the Tony Romeo thing for a few weeks, and I thought to myself, "Bayless, you douche! That stupid nickname will never catch on!" But apparently, douches stick together, so Gumbel was like, "Hey King Douche, I will use that nickname tonight, because I am also a douche. All hail King Douche."

regarding romo i find it odd that when he shits the bed the media run with 'his girlfriend was there shes bad luck omg!' but if donovan mcnabb had a similar game all the stories would be whether there is a qb controversy in philly. now i hate both teams, but it seems to me romo got a HUGE free pass

And so a nickname was bestowed upon Skip Bayless, and the Internet loved it, and it was good.

All hail King Douche!

As for Romo - has anybody considered that maybe he had a bad game because the Eagles have a tough defense? They've already shut down the Patriots offense this season.

Dec 21, 2007, 12:29:00 AM

Steve Lavin on sportcenter..."That allows him to freeball in moneytime."

That's nasy.

Unlike most announce teams, the Davis/May/Holtz trio actually had chemistry. You could tell they were used to (and maybe even enjoy) working together.

May seems to have a tendency to talk down to Holtz at times, but even that is refreshing in small doses. You don't want out and out fighting in the booth, but you also don't want two guys who spend the entire game agreeing with one another. As long as its presented properly, dissension can be a good thing.

Dec 21, 2007, 1:20:00 AM

Enberg is one of my all time favorites but listening to him last night you can hear why he isnt on TV. He had several gaps where he couldnt describe what went on it took him a moment or so. But still I'd take him over most of the guys that are out ther now.

I am stunned Mark May hasn't slipped a pillow over Lou Holtz during one of the naps he surely takes during the day in the studio. I will give credit for Lou's effort last evening in saying the smartest thing I have ever heard him say...during the final moments of the Poinsettia Bowl he said "you always onside kick towards your bench." That makes sense to me because your sideline can usually intimidate the officials into giving you the ball if there's any doubt who has it. Nice job, Lou. Mark, hold off on the pillow. There might still be some hope.
