Barkley Says Tiger's Career More Impressive Than Jordan's

Monday, July 20, 2009

This is just about the toughest argument in the history of Sports, but Charles Barkley knows where he stands. The AZ Central asked Chuck about the careers of Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods, and while you'd think someone who played against Jordan in his prime would pick "His Airness", Barkley decided to throw a curveball....

On Tiger Woods missing the cut at the British Open:

"It bothers me right now that people make such a big deal out of that. He missed one other cut in a major, and that was after his dad died. So that doesn't really count. And to go 13 years and miss one cut in the majors has to be one of the most remakrable achievements out there. That's really impressive. And it shows you the stupidity of certain people who are questionging him. I'll bet every pro has missed 10 or more cuts. but it just shows you the double standard. Some of those guys have probably missed 25 cuts. This is really his first one, and when I talk to him, I'll tell him, 'Bro, you're probably down and have the red ass right now, but to go 13 years and only miss one cut, that's one of your major accomplishments. You're talking about the world's hardest golf courses, and to go 13 years and only miss one cut is remarkable."

On who's more impressive, Tiger or Michael Jordan:

"I think Tiger is more impressive. He has to play against 130 guys or more every week. He can't control what other people are doing. He can only do his thing. They're the two greatest athletes I've seen in my generation. For me, it's cool to have competed against Michael and watched Tiger in his prime."
That's a tough one to answer, and Charles makes a couple of great points, but I would call it a dead heat. Michael Jordan was flat out unbeatable from age 23 to 33 (minus the attempt at Baseball), and Tiger just turned 33 himself. My personal view is that Tiger is starting his decline at the same time as Jordan's, and now that he has an injury to wrestle with and a growing family, winning might not be everything. Still though, it's a great topic to debate.

Congratulations Illinois, You've Won....Well I'm Not Sure What You've Won

Wednesday, February 25, 2009

It's over! The Mount Rushmore of Sports has been decided!!! After a month of random voting, and annoying appearances by Rick Reilly on Sports Center, your Mt. Rushmore is....drum roll. The fine state of Illinois!!! Via ESPN PR....

Fans have voted Illinois’ four sports greats – Michael Jordan, Walter Payton, Ernie Banks and Mike Ditka – the most impressive quartet of sports icons representing each U.S. State, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, to be chiseled on SportsCenter’s “Mt. Rushmore of Sports.” Illinois received 28.6 percent of the votes, beating out the other four finalists – Pennsylvania, California, New York and Alabama.

The five-week series, which began January 18 with fan nominations on ESPN.com and concluded today with the live announcement of the winning state on the 6 p.m. ET edition of SportsCenter, engaged fans with more than 300,000 entries nominating the personalities to represent the states/regions and voting online at different stages of the series. Final voting for the winner from among five finalists began Friday, Feb. 20, and ended Monday, Feb. 23.

Illinois- 28.6% (Michael Jordan, Walter Payton, Ernie Banks, Mike Ditka)
Pennsylvania- 25.5% (Joe Paterno, Mario Lemieux, Roberto Clemente, Wilt Chamberlain)
California- 17.4% (Tiger Woods, John Wooden, Magic Johnson, Jackie Robinson)
New York- 15.4% (Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Jim Brown, Joe Namath)
Alabama- 13.1% (Hank Aaron, Bear Bryant, Bo Jackson, Willie Mays)
I still think the Ditka addition should have bumped Illinois out of the Top Five, but whatever. Arguing that is like arguing the merits of the pointless segment to begin with. So congratulations, Illinois. You've won absolutely nothing! I can't to see what ESPN does next, during a downtime in Sports!!!

ESPN Hypes New Jordans In Top Plays, Josh Elliott Takes It Personally

Friday, January 09, 2009

So the newest Jordans were unveiled yesterday, and shoe addicts everywhere swooned. Well for some reason, ESPN decided to put a glorified commercial for the product before Top Plays, and SC's Josh Elliott took umbrage with the nonsensical spot. Here's the clip...

$230 dollars?!?! Good lord that's a lot of money! How about I give you ten and you just let me tie the tongue around the top of my foot with some twine?

Good on you, Josh Elliott. However, I will say that the new Jordans do look a little badass.

Must Watch TV, CNBC'S Special On Nike

Monday, February 11, 2008

We usually do a good of promoting everyone else's events and goings on in this here blogosphere and more often than not those things are pretty noteworthy. Well CNBC's Darren Rovell (a blogger himself....technically) was recently tabbed to take a look into the brand that is NIKE, and sent me and advanced copy of the program airing tomorrow.

I promised Rovell that I wouldn't hold any punches back when reviewing the documentary, and here's what you need to know......It's amazing.

There are interviews with Phil Knight, Jordan, Lebron, Tiger Woods, and Charles Barkley to name a few, but it's the history of Nike and a look inside it's labor turnaround that make it that much more entertaining. Via CNBC's press release....

Rovell takes viewers on a ride through Nike's history... from the company's chaotic start in 1962 as Blue Ribbon Sports to its current sports dominance. In a rare interview, Nike co-founder Phil Knight tells CNBC how the Nike name was conceived and how he paid a design student the grand sum of 35 dollars to design the signature "swoosh" logo now recognizable around the world. "Swoosh! Inside Nike" also gives viewers an inside look into the story of the groundbreaking advertising that made Nike famous. Dan Wieden, the driving force behind the genius of ad firm Wieden + Kennedy, as well as the athletes who made the ads famous-Tiger Woods, LeBron James and Charles Barkley-reveal how the ads came about.
Many thanks to Rovell for sending me the advance copy and kudos to CNBC for putting something together so interesting that I almost watched it twice. If you have an hour or so I definitely recommend checking out "Swoosh!" tomorrow night.

"Swoosh! Inside Nike": CNBC, Tuesday February 12th (10pm and 1am)
