Breaking News: Pam Ward Still Has No Idea What She's Doing
Friday, June 27, 2008
It was about a month ago when I got this email from a reader named Patty.
What exactly do you have against Pam Ward? Now back then I didn't really know what to say. Do I tell her that nothing's really personal, I just think she's bad at what she does and that I don't hate women? Or do I just say that Pam is terrible at her job more often than not and screws up even the basic of Sports concepts? It was a tough call so I did neither. That's why I'm proud to finally answer Patty's question with the following video. I'm pretty sure it doesn't need a setup....
Do you know her? Have some personal vendetta?
I am just curious.
I hope that answers your question Patty and thanks for writing in!!!

i'm not about to subject myself to a wnba video to reinforce what a pathetic announcer pam ward is. just brutal.
i still think the big ten network was created because bspn stuck her on their big ten noon bspn2 broadcasts.
I'm confused, Patty or Kathy? Or does it matter?
Pam Ward naked...enjoy the rest of your day trying to get that thought out of your head.
Sorry...I wrote that at 3am and was falling asleep at the wheel.
Evidently women announcers aren't allowed to be criticized in the same fashion male announcers are.
Equal rights and all that shit.
What's more brutal?
A. Pam doing NCAA men's football
B. Pam doing the WNBA games
C. The WNBA
Pam Ward is not particularly good at her craft. And a site called Awful Announcing should point that out. But I have to admit that it makes you look misogynistic to carp on one of the few women announcers out there. I'd take Pam Ward over Mike Patrick. Why not rename the Pammies the Britneys in honor of Patrick?
Have you not been to this site much? Ward gets skewered just as much as a lot of male announcers. If you suck, you suck. And it's pointed out. If you're going to be in the big bad world of national broadcasting, be able to stand up to the criticism.
As a broadcaster who hopes to one day BE at that national level, it frustrates me and every other small time announcer to watch people with the high-profile jobs not live up to them. Because the first thought to that is "CHRIST! I COULD DO BETTER!" And THAT'S when a national announcer is in trouble...when some 21 year old asshole like me can do their job better than they can. And it doesn't matter if they're a man or woman. As milehigh sais, "If you suck, you suck." And you will get pointed out on this wonderful site.
"If you suck, you suck" should be the motto of the site. I understand what AAHE is saying for once though. Everyone is going to think what they want about me and how I feel towards women in the booth. If you write about women or race, it can always be construed.
The only thing I can give you is my word that sex doesn't even cross my mind. I've even stated for years that I think Stacey Dales, Doris Burke and Suzy Kolber should be in a booth somewhere. My biggest pet peeve is when an announcer doesn't know the rules of the Sport they're covering and Ward is just the worst at breaking it.
I would also gladly change the name of the "Chronicles" as well. Maybe we'll have a vote or something.
(Anon- I feel your pain. Just be patient. With the roles of the likes of Dan Shulman, Dave Pasch and the like....a turn could be around the corner.)
Poor Pam Ward. Always left out by the girls in grade school, and never pretty enough for the boys, well, ever. And yet, here she is, calling college football and WNBA games when she's not qualified to do either one. Its a great story, I tell ya. A great story.
She sounds like she is talking through a handful of valium.
Someone wake her up! It's the WNBA!
First of all, that video was the most pathetic bit of announcing I think I have ever seen. It's basketball, and I understand it can be easy to lose track of the score if you're fixated on the action, but if it's double OT and time is winding down, you should be aware of the situaton (especially if it's a tie or a 1-possession game where anything can happen)
I agree, "if you suck, you suck" regardless of your gender, age, and race. Criticisms (and for that matter, complements) should not depend on those factors.
As far as the younger ESPN talent goes, I like Dave Pasch a whole lot but I (and I know I'm in the minority on this one) can't stand Dan Shulman. He spends way too much time discussing miscellaneous things and no where near enough time calling the action.
Back to Pammy, once she realized her mistake (I wonder who won in her mind), did she really say "we're going back to overtime", as if the game had actually left it? I'm not an expert at this, but I don't think any game in the history of sports as ever left overtime, gone back to regulation (that right there would be a first) and then returned to overtime. Mike Spears, I mean, er...Mike Patrick is much better than her (then again, most kids can do much, much better than Pam).
I'll wait for my cut of the royalties. But seriously, as AA said, and I agree with, there are women announcers who I like. Male ones I don't. Black ones I do. White ones I don't. I could care less. It's a matter of what I'm HEARING and SEEING. And, yeah, if you suck, you suck.
Well, the game was over. That part of the game. The overtime... second overtime.
She's hot. Let it slide.
