Chicago Radio's Mike North Out At The Score
Thursday, June 26, 2008
There's a ton of craziness going on in the world of Sports Media these days, but Sports Radio has to be going through the most turmoil. Mike and the Mad Dog are on the outs and now one of Chicago's most popular personalities is done at his current job. The controversial Mike North is done with WSCR 670-AM....
"I am done now at the Score," wrote North, who worked at the station for more than 16 years. "I met with management this past Friday and since I wouldn't accept the deal they offered, they told me I wasn't allowed on the air anymore."I personally couldn't stand what I had heard from the guy and he was arguably very similar to Imus but in a smaller market and topic (Sports), but it's still interesting to see him out of the job after 16 years. Also, the rumored pay cut is from well over $1 million to a paltry $700K.
"I want to thank all the listeners and callers who not only laughed at me but with me," he wrote on his Web site. "I heard from a lot of you over the years, and good or bad, I always welcomed your comments. To do radio in my hometown at such a great station was an honor. To all the people I used to work with and I work with now, I say thank you. To the advertisers on my show and on the station who were always with me thank you for being there."

The local ESPN guys are fine. Tirico and Van Pelt, who are decent on TV (albeit not as good as earlier in their careers), are brutal.
That's pretty damn good money for someone who has Down's Syndrome.
To paraphrase from "Major League":
"I thought you said you didn't have any high-priced talent?"
"I forgot about North because he's only high-priced."
The guy has no business being on sports radio in a market the size of Chicago. His blue collar everyman schtick got old years ago. He's lucky some of borderline racist ramblings didn't get him fired years ago.
The former hot - dog vendor basically proved his bona fides way back when during the beginning of his career. Embarassing, vile, ignorant, represents the worst of the genre here. Good riddance, finally.
Amazing day for Chicago sports. It's about time someone realized that no one actually enjoys ignorant douchebags when it comes to sports talk in this city.
Good riddance North, you retard.
If only The Score would get rid of Murph next!!!
They (the SCR) have Dan Patrick on at night, wonder if they'll move him in the morning spot. Or someone should email Keith Olbermann, he's about to emplode, again, at MSNBC.
Good riddance to bad rubbish. North's racists ramblings were tiresome and he should have been fired years ago. $700K was still way too much for this goof.
There's no reason the Score would ever put Dan Patrick's radio show in North's place. They've positioned themselves as all local during the day, with some success and they wouldn't change that now. When I lived in Chicago, I never really liked the Score: not Murph, not Rick Telander's abomination of a show, and certainly not Mike North.
The morning show will go to two locals who are doing the Noon-2 shift. Mully and Handley are good. They'll do well. I never liked North. Way to smug and arrogant. And claiming to be the "everyman" when he's a multimillionaire is B.S.
I didn't like North. I don't like the White Sox announcer Harrelson also. I know that 670 is the Sox' flagship but if you wonder why rating are lower check the show's content and not the on air people. If you talk 90 per cent Sox you get Sox fans. If you talk 90 per cent Cubs you get Cubs fans listening. What team doesn't fill the ball park only when the Cubs are there? What team sells out most games? In radio it's about numbers and cash. The Cubs never filled up till Harry went in the booth...Think about who's in the Sox booth now....This coment is OOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRR.
steve stone is in the radio broadcast booth for the white sox this season, making the broadcasts very enjoyable.
the cub fan who wrote that the score would only draw white sox fans, then denies the coverage of the bears (many/most argue that this is truly a football town), the bulls, and the blackhawks.
the score has some great upcoming and young talent that talk about BOTH baseball teams in the city with intelligence and insight that lacks from the espn local guys.
i didn't like North (i found him sexist) and i've been pleasantly pleased with the return of sports talk in chicago.
crude biggot finally off the air. surprised he wasn't fired sooner
back to the hot dog stand, you racist mental midget
North is a clown. And a talentless one at that. Chicago's sports talk is hyper-provincial and been a merry-go-round for the same talking heads for years. Garbage In. Garbage Out.
