Orsillo And Rem Dawg Crack Themselves Up Over Cows

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

If you have never watched a NESN Red Sox broadcast I will tell you that you are missing out on perhaps one of the most hilarious telecasts you'll ever see. I get people who email me nightly saying things like, "Remy is joking on Kevin Costner," or, "O and Rem are laughing out of control right now." The two really can't be stopped.

Well thanks to NESN we have a behind the scenes look at what exactly sets them off. The answer....cows....

Well, last Sunday, in the break prior to coming back to the start of the game, Russ Kenn and I were telling Don and Jerry that we would be showing some scenic’s of Vermont for our opening billboards, and the conversation turned to talking about cows for some reason. We started to get silly and were speculating that the cows in the scenics were the same cows that were in the Connecticut scenics, or that they were actually professional cows from Hollywood who travel around the country acting for scenics.

The laughter started to build, and about 10 seconds before we got back it became uncontrollable. Don was unable to read the billboard copy because he was laughing so hard…Jerry was rolling in his chair with his finger on the “talk-back” button…the button that allows him to talk to the truck without his audio going out on the air.

Two of my cameramen, Bill Titus and Matt Johnson, immediately shot the booth so we could see what was going on.

If this were school, I think it might be time for the teacher to separate these two. If one of them passes gas they're out of commission for a good ten minutes. That's what makes them so enjoyable though. Don't change a thing NESN and keep putting together clips like this for us.

These two are the absolute best, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a Sox fan.

I watch all the games on Extra Innings and find most of the other announcer/analyst combos to be either insufferable homers or nausiatingly boring.

These guys are genuine, they don't suck up to the team, they enjoy what they do and have fun on the air. How can you top that?

Well done, AA. This stuff happens all the time on Sox broadcasts. These two are off-the-chart funny on a, nearly, nightly basis. Usually, Jerry is the instagator(his humor is, certainly, a little twisted)..and it doesn't take much to get Orsillo snorting.

Sox haters can say what they will about these two, but those in the know realize how good Sox fans have it.

Here in VT, we have an annual cow parade called StrollingoftheHeifers. While I avoid it like the WNBA, it draws upwards of 40k people a year. NESNs producers were wise not to unleash that debacle on Don & Jerry. The guys in the truck would've had to take over the call.

Yeah, right, they aren't homers. Fucking idiots.

j rose-

The local announcers are supposed to be homers...that's their job. The national announcers, no, of course not.

But you're sitting there telling me these guys aren't homers? Give me a break.

G and anon 1,
Have you guys ever heard them on the broadcasts? Or ever heard them being compared to idiotic yahoos like Hawk Harrelson or Michael Kay?

No, because they aren't like that. Sure they support the team that pays their bills, but they don't fawn and fellate the club on a nightly basis.

Sure they are homers in the respect that they want the Red Sox to win the game. But they don't give you an unbiased broadcast. If a Red Sox player does something wrong/stupid, they have no problem pointing it out. If they get a call that maybe they shouldn't have, they will admit that they mightve got a break. Unlike the YES network where they NEVER admit a Yankee player mistake.

Exactly my point, Adam. Well said.

In fact, during the game I'm watching now there were two such instances like that.

Clay Buchholz appeared to nail a runner at first, but was called safe. All Remy said was "looked like he might've been out there, close play though".

In the same inning the Sox got a close call at first, and Remy admitted they caught a break.

You would never catch Hawk or Kay saying stuff like that. With those a-holes, every missed call is an incredible injustice, and every favorable call was meant to be. Not so with Rem & Don O.

They may not be as big "homers" as the White Sox guys (who are on their own planet in terms of crazy) but they are pretty much schills for the Mother Ship.

Remy is the friggin president of their made up fan club! He's as biased as they come.

Orsillo is a pro, but Remy is a caricature at this point.

And there are like 9 rotating people in the YES broadcast booth, each with varying skill levels... Michael Kay is a bafoon, but many of the others (Singleton, Cone, Flaherty) are pros and don't shy away from saying how much Damon's noodle arm or Melky's bat are liabilities.

Problem with NESN's overproduced Sox games is that the two announcers - especially the Remdawg(sic) take away from the play on the field.
I take the NESN feed and listen to the local radio folks. For my money, Joe Castiglione & Co. pay more attention to what's actually going on down on the field.
Still, different strokes I guess.

Remy & Orsillo crack me up. Their Patriot Day pizza-throwing video might be one of my top five all-time YouTube favorites.

I'm a Rangers fan, and I love our team of Josh Lewin & Tom Grieve. Remy & Orsillo are the best team of any non-Rangers broadcast crew I've ever watched.

I'm a Yankee fan and I must say that those two are pretty funny guys, and solid announcers.

Also, I'm not at all a fan of Michael Kay (mostly because he's a weirdo), but his homerism could be much worse. He'll actually show some excitement (however faked it may be) for opposing team HRs, etc., and does from time to time question close calls that go the Yankees' way. Sure, he's a homer, but nowhere in the same league as guys like Hawk Harrelson. With Hawk you can completely miss an opposing team's HR because Hawk won't even raise his voice in the slightest! "yawn... grand slam... sigh ... for the Indians... yawn"

Oh and I do agree with Nick that the best YES announcing teams don't involve Kay. I'd love to have Jim Kaat come back -- Singleton as PBP and Kaat doing color would be perfect, but I'd pick Singleton & Cone over any other current combination. Flaherty is a little too serious/boring, and Leiter is just a little off. Paul O'Neill has been hilarious at times, but he only does about 5 games a year, it seems.
