Being Number One Is Not A Good Place For College Basketball Teams This Year
Wednesday, January 28, 2009
Not sure if you all were watching, and it's been a long time since I've put up a highlights video, but Wake just knocked off number one Duke at the buzzer after a great comeback by the Blue Devils. Here's the end of the game in case you missed it....
That's three number ones to go down in just twelve days, and we're officially in the College Basketball season. Just a great game, and even though I'm not entirely sold on either team as a National Champion (one has too much inside game, one has too much outside), both teams have a shot of going pretty far in the Tourney.
The best part about all of this? Pittsburgh went down tonight, so that means that with a win against Providence (who put up 100 in a win over 'Cuse tonight), UConn will be number one. Why is that significant? Because the day after the Super Bowl, the Huskies travel to current #7 Louisville, and a fifth different number one could be crowned this season.

Wow, what a game.
Congrats to Wake Forest. Personally, I can't stand Duke (relax Duke fans, I hate UNC just as much), so anytime they lose, especially with two of their biggest fans calling the game (Mike Patrick & Dick Vitale), it's going to put a smile on my face.
The best thing about this game late was when Patrick compared Duke's "comeback" tonight to the 10 points down in 55 seconds comeback against Maryland. Not even remotely close to the truth.
As I saw the end I was hoping the court wasn't stormed. Fortunately, only some did, and those fans are idiots for storming the court. The smart ones stayed in their seat, knowing the real celebration is in April.
Jeff Teague's my home dog. Represent Pike High! Doing the Red Devils proud.
I spent more time yelling at the announcers in this game than any game recently.
Mike Patrick was annoying as hell asking "Can you believe it?" literally 10+ times in a 3 minute span leading up to the start of the clip.
Dick made one point every 5 minutes, and would just repeat himself between. Plus he kept using the phrase "winners circle" which was annoying me.
And to top it off, after Wake controlled the entire second half and eventually won, both guys (not surprisingly) wouldn't shut up about the heart Duke showed in not giving up, even though their largest deficit was only 9.
I wonder were dickie v n his partner were anti-wake or pro-duke towards the end of the contest?
@ M: Mike Patrick and Dickie V are very pro-Duke.
One of my biggest complaints with Mike Patrick is his "Are You Kidding Me?" pop at every big moment of every game he does.
What the fuck does that even mean? He didn't convert some circus shot prayer.
Mike Patrick is annoying. HOWEVEHHH, I'm still the most annoying person of all time.
Sincerely,
Stephen A. Smith
P.S., hey BCS proponents I thought the college basketball regular season had no drama. OOOOOPS!!!
Great ending to the game.
But I don't see why the fans are storming the court. They are the No. 4 team in the country. The fans need to act like that.
