God, It Feels Just Like 1948
Sunday, October 21, 2007
You can read everything you ever wanted to know about the 2007 American League Championship Series here, so I'm not gonna pretend to be smart and act like I have anything new to add. That 1948 reference in the title pretty much stretches the limits of my knowledge base. Oh, and this: Denny Galehouse - BOO! Gene Bearden - YAY!
Alright, and this: in the 1965 World Series, Sandy Koufax shut out the Twins in Game Five, then came back on two days rest to pitch Game Seven. He didn't have his best stuff that day, and Don Drysdale was up in the bullpen more than once, but still: Game Seven, leave it all on the line. I kinda hope Josh Beckett gets in touch with his inner Sandy Koufax before the game starts. Or at least his inner Don Drysdale. Just not his inner Jim Kaat.
Related note: you could also make the argument that Koufax had to retire a year later before his arm fell off, but I choose to ignore that particular development.
Bottom line is this: if you're rooting for the Red Sox, hope that Daisuke Matsuzaka is more kaibutsu than koneko. If you're rooting for the Indians, hope that Jake Westbrook doesn't wake up in the morning, look in the mirror, and remember that he's Jake Westbrook. Simple as that.
And with that, I leave it to you, the readers. Predictions? Decrees? Hopes? Dreams?

goat, read your Bible! chill out.
AA, the indians should be GLAD they're not in the same position with C.C. or Fausto ready to pitch on short rest. Talk about over-rated.
Not that I want to get into this, but shouldn't the people who demanded that Tampa Bay remove "Devil" from their nickname be the ones to "chill out?"
Let's not even get started on how many of the Rockies believe that their winning streak is the product of devine intervention...
I have read the bible, and I don't remember the part about the almighty taking sides in sporting events... I'll be rooting for Cleveland or Boston to defeat the Rockies on that basis alone.
Thankfully my Sunday worship starts in about an hour. :]
Sox win tonight because it feels like Cleveland lost the last two games when they got on the plane to come back to Boston. Sox are hoping for five or six out of Matsuzaka then they can get Beckett for two and Papelbon to finish.
Steve is correct. Matsuzaka needs to go for 5 decent innings. Then you can still use Beckett, Jeemer, hell.. even Wake. Then Papelbon sews it up.
I hope :]
I prefer to view this as a repeat of the 1999 ALDS. I shall allow Josh Beckett to channel his inner Pedro and pitch 6 perfect innings in relief.
"J.D. Drew showed his worth tonight ... he is a major part of the reason why there is a Game 7."
featured ESPN the conversation comment right now
first off no, that does not prove someones worth, one playoff moment does not equate to justifying a horrible contract. and second, how do they feature a comment with such a glaring grammar error?
anyways, tribe win 7-3
I know this is a football comment but someones has to post the burn on Tiki from the Giants game. "There is nothing wrong with the Giants running game, while Tiki sits on a couch and talks about shoes and handbags..." happened about 7 min left in 2nd q. Good stuff.
who said the almighty takes sides in sporting events?
YOU brought it up -- not anyone else?
which 'religious group' is asking the d-rays to take the devil out of their name?
in 2003 when beckett was with the marlins, he pitched a 2 hit shutout in game 5 of the nlcs against the cubs, then pitched 4 innings in relief in game 7 giving up only 1 run.
I wonder if Matsuzaka misses pitching against teams with names like the "Ham Fighters." Sounds like a team I might have created in "Baseball Stars" when I was 15.
Tampa Bay Ham Fighters... Think about you, you christian fundamentalist twits! (ooh.. we can't bear to have the word devil in our name anymore)
Anyway, Red Sox win 6-5 tonight.
