Matt Ryan "Appears" In "Oklahoma"

Friday, July 11, 2008

I know athletes do a ton of stuff they don't want to do, and I don't have anything against musicals, but standing awkwardly on the stage for almost two minutes isn't something I'd look forward to. Here are Falcons players Matt Ryan and Sam Baker doing just that with the cast of Oklahoma. Via WL and KSK....

Wow. That song could have the longest outro ever. They had to be up there thinking, "Just put your g'damn hands up and end this thing!" Too funny.

Introducing Baseball Tonight's Battle Of The Bands

Friday, June 13, 2008

It's Summer programming time folks! Are you ready?! Oh, I'm not so sure. Of course Titletown is going to be annoying but how about a "Battle of the Bands" playing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" on Baseball Tonight? What if I told you Journey and Peter Gammons are involved???

But you won't see it from ESPN analyst Peter Gammons, who will play Ball Game on-air Sunday (7 p.m. ET) in a sort of homage to the late guitar legend Bo Diddley: "It's how Bo Diddley would have played it."

And ESPN's Baseball Tonight on Monday will begin airing music videos from nine musical acts — including REO Speedwagon — playing the 100 year-old anthem. (FYI: Lyricists Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer never went to a baseball game — and weren't even interested in the sport. Art needn't imitate life.)

The idea, says ESPN producer Jay Levy, is to create a battle of the bands decided by online voting, starting June 29, with a winner announced July 13: "Personally, I'm a huge American Idol fan, so I figured why not have our own little American Idol."

Other contestants: Jazz guitarist John Pizzarelli, bluegrass band Punch Brothers, rhythm-and-blues singer Lloyd, rockers The Cab, country singer Gretchen Wilson, Latin and salsa hip-hop group Ozomatli — "they're fabulous," Gammons says — as well as saxophonist Branford Marsalis and rockers Candlebox.
Wait, Candlebox?!?! I love Gammons, Journey, and Ozomatli, but f'ing Candlebox??? Actually, come to think of it....I might actually get into this. At least they tried to get a nice variety of different musical acts and this could be fun. If they hadn't tried to compare it to "American Idol" then I would definitely be on board.

(Yeaaaaaah. You left me faaaaaar behinnnd yind. Now may-a-a-be I dint mean to treat youuuuu oh sooooo ba-a-d, but eye diddddd it anyway yay!!)

Try to get that out of your head the rest of the day.

Old 'Ball Game' will get new treatments on ESPN (USA Today)

The World Must Know Of Bonerama

Tuesday, January 01, 2008

Nothing against the group's singing of the anthem, but you're telling me the network that airs American Idol couldn't have gotten a band better than one named "Bonerama"? Via B-Rama's webpage....

The buzz on Bonerama grew with hometown acclaim (with the band winning numerous OffBeat Magazine Awards; and Mullins regularly topping Offbeat's trombone category), lots of roadwork, and a pair of live albums - the first recorded close to home at the Old Point in Algiers; the second on tour in New York. The Boston Herald called them a "bonehead's dream"; the Vail (CO) Daily noted that "the sound is fat and wet; sometimes downright lusty." As hometown music zine Offbeat put it, "That nerdy kid in the band room with the trombone just might have the last laugh after all."
Fat and wet my friends.....Bonerama is Fat and wet.

About Bonerama (Bonerama.net)

Monday Night Football, New Music, And You!

Monday, October 01, 2007

I don't know how I missed this but apparently this has been going on for awhile now. The Music Industry continues lose album sales every month to piracy, and they have to come up with innovative ways to market their artists. Well one of those creative avenues is now Monday Night Football. ESPN actually has deals with several record labels to feature their top artist's new releases each Monday before their albums come out on Tuesdays.

"On Tuesday Mornings that's when all the labels turn out their big record releases and we have the biggest eyeballs, we hope, that a label and an artist can reach on a Monday Night before they drop their record and we thought what a perfect way to fuse the two."- ESPN Music Director Kevin Wilson via Wall Street Journal Radio

You know what...as annoying as hearing an entire album all game is.....that's actually a really great idea for both parties involved. Everyone always complains the songs they use on Football and Baseball broadcasts are over 20 years old (if I hear "Start Me Up" by the Stones on another NFL Kickoff I'm going to off myself), so this might be a good thing. I thought back to the first few weeks and sure enough Kanye West was Week One and the Foo Fighters were last week. What do we get tonight you ask?

The Boss Bruce Springsteen and Matchbox 20! As long as it's not that stupid "This is how a heart breaks" song they played during the NBA Playoffs two years ago I'm cool with both of those selections.

Here's the rest of the growing list according to Wilson.....Rascal Flatts, Eddie Vedder, Nelly, Jordan Sparks, Chris Brown, and myyyyyyyyy nammmmmmme isssssss Kiiiiiiiiid Rock!

P.S.- ESPN is also now saying that the Jamie Foxx piece is not mocking the "Cameragate" incident with the Patriots as the Boston Herald had originally reported. Jay Rothman is on record as saying this idea was hatched between weeks one and two of the season.

You Create the Caption #23 (Now With Links!)

Tuesday, June 05, 2007

(Usually) Everyday (usually around noon) I'll throw out a photo from the AP or one of the bigger sites and you provide the caption. Hilarity ensues. I'm also adding a handful (or two) of links at the bottom of the page that you should check out each day.

Yesterday's Winner: I put up a very uninspired picture, but you didn't disappoint. Your winner goes by the name offfffffffff........Pete!

"Hold on just one second there. You mean to tell me that EVERYBODY in this league pays their players? Well then how in the hell am I supposed to get the best guys? A DRAFT? I thought this was the NBA, not god damn Vietnam! Oh, I am so frickin' out of here! I want nothing to do with this Bizarro league!"- Pete

Sometime(s) I just go with the ones that make the most sense. Couldn't you imagine him saying something like that. Maybe not the Vietnam part, but you get the idea.

Are you funny enough to create a headline for this photo of Jean-Sebastien Giguere blocking a shot by Ottawa Senators center Antoine Vermette?

Musical Links- VT Edition

Friday, April 20, 2007

There's going to be only one link and one song heading into this weekend. The past week has been a tough one for everyone. I can't even imagine the pain that the direct Virginia Tech community has endured, and is still going through. I just want the student body to know that you have been not only strong and courageous, but classy as well.

I fully respect your stance on not talking to the media, and agree that the vultures have once again gotten out of hand. Please stay strong and my/our thoughts are with you.

The one link for the end of the week is to the Foundation for Roanoke which has setup a fund to take care of funeral and medical expenses. If you are able send in a little bit of cash over the weekend please do so.

The song is Hokie Triumph. Since today is National Hokie Day I found it only fitting to display the colors (idea borrowed from Fanhouse) on the site to show my, and the entire Awful Announcing Community's support.

Techmen, we're Techmen, with spirit true and faithful,
Backing up our teams with hopes undying;
Techmen, Oh, Techmen, we're out to win today,
Showing pep and life with which we're trying;
V.P., old V.P., you know our hearts are with you
In our luck which never seems to die;
Win or lose, we'll greet you with a glad returning,
You're the pride of V.P.I.

Just watch our men so big and active
Support the Orange and Maroon. Let's go Techs.
We know our ends and backs are stronger,
With winning hopes, we fear defeat no longer.
To see our team plow through the line, boys.
Determined now to win or die:
So give a Hokie, Hokie, Hokie, Hi,
Rae, Ri, old V.P.I.
Have the best weekend you can,

AA

Musical Links and Whatnot

Friday, April 13, 2007

From now on I'm going to put the links out front and have your crappy song on the rest of the entry. Some people like getting a song stuck in their head for an entire weekend....some don't. So click read more if you dare.

A great post on the Washington Nationals Announcers. (Tad Cranky)
Ugh. Gilbert is depressing me. (Bullets Forever)
Oh Ken Tremendous....Joe's just special. (FJM)
Great Video on the Duke Lax closure. (Larry Brown Sports)
Robert Kraft has a little bit of money. (The Feed)
You thought the Cincy Mayor was bad? (Setpro via SBTB)

Extra P and OMDQ will provide your reading material, and I'll see you with the 1st Round Mock Results on Monday.

Onto the song.....

This is why I link
This is why This is why
This is why I link
This is why I link
This is why This is why
This is why I link

I'm hot cause I link (link)
You ain't cause you don't
This is why This is why
This is why I link

This is why I'm hot
I don't gotta link
I can sell a mill linkin' nothing on the site
I represent DC
I got it on ma back
ESPN say that we lost it
So I'ma link it back
I love the Dirty, Dirty
Cause those sites show me love
The ladies... start to bounce
As soon as I hit the club
But in the Midwest
They love to link it slow
So when I hit the H
I watch you link it on the floor
And if you needed it hyphy
I take it to the Bay
Frisco to Sac-town
They link it everyday
Compton to Hollywood
As soon as I hit L.A.
I'm in that Low, Low
I link it the Cali way
And when I hit Chi
People say that I'm fly
They like the way I link they like
(They like my) my attire move crowds from side to side
They ask me how I do it and simply I reply...

Slow day here at AA headquarters, so I was thinking it's time to dust of the musical links. Haven't done them in about two weeks. so I hope you enjoy.

Unfortunately my appearance on ESPN Radio has been nixed for the day, so you get the entire live-blog of the Patriot League Final starting at 4:30. I do hope you'll follow along. Also, I'm still looking for some folks to round out the seeding previews. Let me know through email if your interested.

The Song.......

Why? In memory of one Anna Nicole Smith (yep, it's confirmed....she's gone from this world)

Did you ever know that you're my hero,
and everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
'cause you are the link beneath my wings.

It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
but I've got it all here in my post.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it,
I would be nothing with out you.

Fly, fly, fly away,
you let me fly so high.
Oh, fly, fly,
so high against the sky, so high I almost touch the sky.
Thank you, thank you, thank God for you,
the link beneath my wings.

RIP Anna.....onto the links.......

Oh that Bill Simmons. You just can't help but call him out sometimes. (Fire Joe Morgan)
A great find of an Eli Manning doppelganger. But you'd probably rather read an interview of me. (NFL Scores)

Announcement and Musical Links

Friday, January 26, 2007

For a good while now I've been saying that everyone who links and/or asks for a link will get one. Well that process has slowly deteriorated over the past few months. Talk to that hussy of a USC Song Girl Megan if you're looking to place blame. There have just been so many links over the past few months that it's just impossible.

No I'm not bragging.....I think it's rad that people come here everyday, and I'd never take myself that seriously. So here's what I'm proposing......just email me. I don't care what your site is....just email me and you'll eventually have a link. And if you don't get a link....email me again.....make me feel guilty.....and you will get a link. It's just much easier to stay organized through email.

Mr. Mottram.....The Blogfather, and creationist of the insanely popular, rad, and informative (I'm really only saying this because I want him to hire me. Seriously....you so need a "make fun of people" guy) Fanhouse.....will be in Miami all next week for the SuperBowl. Sports Bloggers Live will be on site and will undoubtedly have some insane guests. Well one of those guests happens to be yours truly. I am certain to be the lowest guest on the totem pole, but I'm going to try my darnedest to give my two cents on everything involving the Super Bowl Broadcast and the Announcing Team.

This should take place Thursday around lunchtime, and I'll give you some more info as it comes to me (Seriously......they've had Bob Costas, Lee Corso, Jim Nantz, Peter King, AND Wayne Brady......I don't know how I can compete). Below is Jamie on Cold Pizza talking about the Top 40 Sports Figures of 2006 which AA was a part of.

And finally a funny tidbit from reader Riggster......

Not sure if this qualifies as "Awful Announcing" but it made me laugh as I was listening: I was listening to the Lakers game last night on AM570 KLAC as they were playing the Warriors. Color commentator Mychal Thompson was talking about Kobe Bryant. He said, "All Kobe needs to do is average 8 points a quarter, if he does that he'll average 24 points." A few seconds later, as Spero Dedes was continuing to call the play by play, Thompson mentioned that the producer corrected him and the correct total would be 32 points." Thompson attended the University of Minnesota and excelled in basketball, he is still the schools leading scorer. They must not make the basketball players take math up there.

They must not. Have a great weekend!

Live-Blogs, Musical Links, and Agent Zero for MVP

Friday, January 05, 2007

Haven't done one of the musical links in a while, so that's what you're getting this afternoon courtesy of Three Days Grace. But a little info first.

Update: Another thing that I forgot to mention was the links. I am most definitely not swaying from my original promise that anyone and everyone who links this site, or asks for a link, gets one. Ass-Gate sort of blew up the site (for those of you in NewYork look for an AA mention in Newsday....hopefully) and it will take a little while to catch up. Please bear with me.

If you are around this weekend I and my Merry AA Cohorts have pretty much every Football game (but one....and it's the Cowboys/Seahawks so who cares) covered with a live-blog. So if you're bored at home please join us for some football......

The Live- Blog Schedule:

Saturday 4:30pm- KC/INDY......Signal to Noise kicks off the NFL Playoffs.

Sunday 1pm- NYJ/NE.......yours truly is on the case.

Sunday 4:30- NYG/PHI......Beloved commenter Sam T. leads you through the game.

Sunday 8pm- GMAC Bowl......One More Dying Quail is back to do another crappy Bowl Game for me. His quote "Hey, someone has to do the 2AM SportsCenter". Well OMDQ is right....someone does....and I'm glad it's him.

Monday 8:15pm- The National Championship- Florida v. Ohio State......I'll be your host with many others chiming in. Also a special appearance by OSU Alum The Awful Girlfriend (please pray that OSU wins for my sake).

In case you forgot.....there are also two other crappy Bowl Games left. One is actual tomorrow morning. Western Michigan takes on the Scarlet Knight killing Bearcats of Cincinnati. Cincy is at -7.5, the GMAC Bowl has Southern Miss -6, and your championship game is OSU -8. Get your picks to me soon.

Okay onto the Musical Links.........

I can't escape this link
So many times i've tried
But i'm still linked inside
Somebody get me through this nightmare
I can't control my liiiiink

So what if you can see the darkest link of me?
No one will ever change this linky that I have become
Help me believe it's not the real link
Somebody help me tame this liiiiink
(This link, this link)

Somebody help me through this link
I can't control myself
Somebody wake me from this link
I can't escape this hell

Bad I know....it's no Fergie, but what the hell.

Terry Bradshaw hypes Ugly Betty from the San Jose Mercury News
Why the MVC shouldn't be called a "Mid" Major anymore from Extrapolater.

Agent Zero is making up new terms daily from YAY! Sports
An interesting Sports Book Review from the Big Picture
An interesting piece on Pistol Pete from Signal to Noise.

And with that I give you your 2006-2007 MVP Gilbert Arenas destroying the Bucks with a 40-Footer the other night. Just amazing. Make sure you check out the second video to see that Gil turned around and walked away before the shot went in. He is just amazing.
