Dear FOX, It's Time To Send Dick Stockton Out To Pasture
Sunday, December 20, 2009
I've been rather easy on Dick Stockton all year long. I've ignored the player name mistakes, and I even decided against pulling the video of him calling the play clock "the shot clock" last week. But after today's play-by-play abortion, I just can't keep quiet anymore.
Not only did Stockton screw up just about everyone's name on both the Jets and Falcons, and call the Jets , the Eagles, about 10 times during the contest, but he spent the last four minutes of a 10-7 game saying the score was tied. He even got the call of the go ahead touchdown, with a minute remaining, wrong (I'm trying to grab the video and will update when I do so).
I know Dick Stockton has been a great announcer for most of his career, and some people still enjoy him, but this has just gotten ridiculous. He was terrible covering Baseball this past season, and he's been even worse calling NFL games this season. It's time to hang em up, Dick....you had a good run at it.

Agreed, but then again, the shittiness of Charles Davis is highly contagious.
Funny...I was yelling at the TV saying the same thing.
Kinda hard to take you seriously, AA, when you get the headline that wrong.
How did that Andrea Kremer's not coming back story work out?
Yea, AA if you are going to criticize Dick Stockton's wrok, which I agree with 100 %. But come on AA, Dick Stockton hasn't worked for CBS sicne the early 90's he works for FOx !
Dick Stockton should think aobut hanging it up because every game he calls he gets worse.
Yes, it was awful, especially the scoring screw-up at the end.In his defense the Jets managed to miss what seemed like 8 field goals so I can almost understand his confusion.
Hate to admit it, its time for him to go. I can't see Stockton on TV without remembering him interviewing Harry Walker live on KDKA on the day the Pirates fired him in... wait for it... 1967.
Stockton and Enberg both... they're like twins anymore.
The Seahawks had him for 6 straight weeks... I seriously wanted to shoot myself, and not just because I was watching the Seahawks. Seahawk fans even came up with a drinking game with him. Everytime he mispronounced our kicker's name (Olindo Mare) you drink. It's in his Wikipedia article:

Sorry for CBS/FOX mixup. I blame it on my first cold of the winter and the subsequent NYQuil I've been throwing back.
Oh, now you're like Tiger? Drug use will take the blame? Sorry, you can't post every nit-picking mistake made on air then make one that big.
@ Mark: Picking on Dick Stockton is not nit-picking. He has constantly mispronounced the names of several players, he more than once called the Jets the Eagles as AA mentioned (is that glaring mistake nitpicking?) and the game is just way too fast for him. He needs to follow the shoes of Dick Enberg and hang it up for good or do exactly what Enberg did and take a job with a local broadcast channel of a baseball team.
And hopefully he'll take Verne Lundquist with him when he goes.
Count Stockula and Mangina.
The perfect excuse for having a radio nearby.
Wrong, JFein...this site makes more mistakes than you can imagine. It's hypocritical for him to be whining all the time.
I generally dislike sports media hacks with a passion. One reason is the whole 'swelled-head' thing. In today's era with 'old media' looking like the Hindenburg at Lakehurst, that act has worn thin. No one respects people across 'old media' anymore. But the bigger reason to dislike these people is because they hold onto their jobs for way too long. The media industry is awash in layoffs and young talent is held at bay because these fossils sink their fangs into their jobs like college professors clawing for tenure. We know why, too. Dump Stockton and he'll launch an age-discrimination lawsuit. It's what media hacks do. They always play that card (or threaten to).
It's what happens when you draw salaries from multiple employers. Stockton also calls NBA for TNT, and at last check was the play-by-play voice for the Oakland A's. Shoot, I can recall when he did that for the Red Sox during their '75 Series run.
Here's my two cents on Stockton:
I'm sentimental towards Stockton because I am a huge Celtics fan and I grew up watching him and Heinsohn call those classics on CBS. And they were a great announce team. But at the same time, it was sad listening to him make those mistakes during Sunday's broadcast.
He should have kept an eye on the scoreboard. In addition, a producer or even Charles David should have said something.
That is all. Happy holidays.
I haven't watched a NFL game with the sound on for years.
Hey, Hobby...he was pxp for the A's.... in the mid-90's. Way to stay current. How about looking it up before embarrassing yourself.
Dick Stockton has been borderline senile for years. He is either wildly unprepared or is simply an idiot. 'Dick Stockton' is synonymous with botched pronunciations.
The bad news... his painful announcing doesn't end after the NFL season. He's also doing BCS...
Hey Mark, if anyone or anything is embarrassing, it's you.
Honestly, who gives a s**t?
MARK IS REALLY ON THE BALL GUYS. GIVE HIM SOME SPACE.
I haven't been blessed with the Dick Stockton Competence Era, so I don't know what that was like. Someone will fire him.
Agreed, however, he calls games for FOX for the NFL, not CBS.
