ESPN is sending College Gameday to Boston for the officially dull, and unranked, matchup of Florida State and Boston College. Obviously there has to be a reason, and while some might think it's to promote the launch of ESPNBoston.com, that's actually not the case. ESPN is heading to BC in part to discuss the story of Mark Herzlich, who was the Eagles' star linebacker who was 2008's ACC Defensive POY, and diagnosed with cancer this past March. ESPN's College GameDay has been all over the country since they took their show on the road, literally, in 1993. Until this coming weekend, though, the show had only been in Boston once, parachuting into Chestnut Hill in 2005 for Boston College's first ACC game.

The reasoning for going to a matchup of two unranked teams in a town where college football may be the fourth or fifth passion? Well, at least on its surface, it likely has something to do with the story of Mark Herzlich, the BC linebacker who was 2008's ACC Defensive Player of the Year and diagnosed with cancer in March.

However, at the risk of sounding crass: Does this really require moving the entire production to Boston? ESPN's offices, it is impossible to forget, are in Bristol, Connecticut, and their crews are more than capable of driving to Chestnut Hill or Pennsylvania, where Herzlich may be with his family, and putting together a moving piece with or without GameDay in town.

I personally think where Gameday goes, isn't really important, and there's not a chance that ESPN would send the crew to hype a CBS game airing that day. Sure there's Cal-USC, and Oklahoma-Miami, but why not raise awareness for Cancer research whenever you can.

Why College GameDay Is Coming to Your City, If You Live in Boston (The Sporting Blog)

For the third time in five years, ESPN will send it's Gameday crew to Penn State. The trio will post up at Beaver Stadium before the Iowa-PSU game, and the fun will get underway at 10am, yet again....

ESPN's College GameDay will travel to Penn State Saturday for the No. 5 Nittany Lions game against Iowa at 8 p.m. at Beaver Stadium.

Host Chris Fowler and analysts Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard will broadcast from Penn State prior to the Big Ten opener for both teams. Penn State will seek redemption from the Hawkeyes, who upset the Lions late in the season last year to spoil their national championship hopes.

The program will air from 10 a.m. — noon with other live segments throughout the day, as well as late Friday afternoon.

For the second straight year, ESPN will be taking College Gameday to Austin, TX this weekend, for the Texas Tech-Texas game this Saturday. Via Scout.com....

For the second-straight year and third time in the last five years, ESPN's College GameDay will be on site Saturday in Austin for the annual grudge match between Texas Tech and the University of Texas.

The show, which features analysts Chris Fowler, Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard, will begin at 9 a.m. (CT) and will air live from an undisclosed location on the University of Texas campus. For more information on the chosen location, visit www.texassports.com.

The Texas Tech-Texas game has kept the GameDay crew busy over the last few years as the show first broadcasted from the site of the game back in 2005 when Tech's Cody Hodges led a 6-0 team into Austin to face a 6-0 Texas squad led by Vince Young. The show made its first appearance in Lubbock last year for the matchup between No. 5 Texas Tech and No. 1 Texas.

Saturday's game between the Red Raiders and Longhorns will kickoff at 7 p.m. (CT) live on ABC from Darrell K. Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium. Brent Musburger, Kirk Herbstreit and Lisa Salters will call the game for ABC.

I'm actually surprised that ESPN didn't pick Florida as the location, with Tennessee coming into Gainesville (or Nebraska @ VT), but Texas Tech-Texas is certainly a big enough rivalry now to fit the bill.

ESPN's College GameDay Headed To Austin (Scout: Raider Power)

A Columbus radio station, that has on ESPN analysts as regular guests, has been talking all week about the upcoming UM-OSU game. They've had both Chris Spielman (OSU alum) and Desmond Howard (UM alum) on in the past few days, and both have pulled no punches in laying into the team and the coaching staff....

Desmond Howard- "That would be the popular thinking after watching them lose eight games this season, and the way they've lost some of those games. I made a comment (Sunday) on our show that it's not like they were trying to learn a spread offense (as much as) like they were trying to learn how to play football in some of those games, they looked so bad. This isn't Michigan, this is like Michigan Tech.

"I said, 'If they win six games, Rich Rod is one of the best coaches in college football.' Then I said, 'If they win seven, he has to be finalist for the best coach in college football, if they win eight, he is the best coach in college football.' I expected them to struggle.

"Now, there's a way to lose, and there's a way to look embarrassing. Earlier in the season, when guys couldn't field kickoffs, that to me that goes beyond coaching.

"There's a lot of blame to go around, so Rich Rodriguez, and (defensive coordinator) Scott Shafer and the rest of the coaching staff -- those guys definitely have to shoulder some of the blame, there's no doubt about that. But as a player, you have to have some pride to go out on the field and do certain things that show you're a football player."

Chris Spielman- "[The Wolverines] stink, they're not very good. They don't play offense ... they can't run it consistently, they can't throw it consistently, they can't stop the run, they're not very good defending the pass, they're not very good covering kicks, they're not very good returning kicks."

"I love seeing them beaten down, man. It's great."

Well how's that for journalistic integrity? I understand the rivalry and the hatred, but saying you love seeing them "beaten down", is just a little over-the-top if you ask me. I think Herbstreit has always taken the right approach when he discusses the two teams, and there's always going to be some level of love for your school, but let's tone it down some there, Chris.

Here's your weekly post on where Gameday is heading and this one isn't much of a surprise. Chris, Lee, Desmond and Kirk will be heading to Baton Rouge, Louisiana for the Crimson Tide's visit to LSU. More importantly though, it's Nick Saban's return to the team he abandoned....

Just two years later, Saban lied and denied his way from Miami to Tuscaloosa, Ala., while LSU fans cried as he bolted the big time to return to his comfort-zoned college coaching at none other than LSU rival Alabama.

And just two seasons later, Saban, who signed the most lucrative long term guaranteed contract in college football history at $32 million for eight years, has Alabama on top of the world of college football just in the nick of time for his return to the bayou. ESPN's College GameDay show will broadcast live from LSU Saturday morning.

"We want to kick his butt," said veteran LSU fan Gary Perkins of Pineville while at LSU's 35-10 win over Tulane game Saturday night. "I don't respect him. We don't respect him. He's a carpetbagger and a turncoat. I appreciate what he did and what he left us, but we don't respect him. We appreciate having him, but we don't respect him."

Man, that seems like forever ago, but it's good to see the Tigers still hold a grudge. Makes for a better game that way. With that game on CBS, it looks like Herbstreit is going to have to fly into Baton Rouge this week and then head right back to Lubbock, TX after Gameday to call the OK State-Tech game late Saturday night. Well either that or ESPN will try to make CAL-USC relevant, but I don't see that happening.

LSU fans waiting for Saban's return (The News Star)

In what will easily be the biggest showdown of the season so far (sorry USC-OSU was terrible), #1 Texas heads to Texas Tech, and College Gameday will be on hand in Lubbock for the Big XII matchup. Via Lubbock Online....

The Texas Tech football team will host No. 1 Texas at 7 p.m. Saturday, and ESPN has chosen Lubbock as its host site for its pregame show, "College GameDay."

"I don't know how you could place a price on the exposure that this brings," Tech athletic director Gerald Myers said. "It's priceless. I don't know if there's a way of knowing the value of this kind of exposure that GameDay will bring to the university and the city of Lubbock. You can't put a price tag on that."

The students aren't the only ones gearing up for the big game. Tech already has received the most credential requests for a single game in school history. The number reached 339 requests by early evening on Sunday, according to Tech spokesman Blayne Beal, with requests coming from the New York Times, USA Today, Sports Illustrated, Yahoo Sports, ESPN and several bowl-game officials.

This marks the third time that ESPN is sending Gameday into the State of Texas, but it's the first time they'll be doing so on the campus of Texas Tech (they covered TTU-UT in 2005 but the game was in Austin). As far as the game itself, it's looking to be a hell of a matchup. Not only are ticket prices through the roof (upwards of $3500 on Ebay), with both team's offenses among the Top Five in the Country, but the over/under could be set at an unprecedented number.

ESPN's College GameDay' coming live from Lubbock (Lubbock Online)

I thought Home Depot owned all the advertising space within College Gameday but apparently I was wrong. ESPN has sold the naming rights for the Corso Picks segment (you know the one where Corso puts the mascot head on?) to Chick-Fil-A....

In the segment, ESPN analyst Lee Corso predicts the winning team by donning the mascot head or gear of one of the competing teams. It's the culmination of the show, drawing cheers or jeers from the crowd depending on Corso's pick.

Aptly enough, "GameDay's" first show this season will be in Atlanta for the Chick-fil-A College Kickoff, an Aug. 30 matchup between the University of Alabama and Clemson University.

The move is significant for the chain of about 1,400 restaurants because it does little national advertising, choosing instead to focus on local and regional efforts.

College students, alumni and fans make a great audience for Chick-fil-A, said Steve Robinson, the company's senior vice president of marketing. "GameDay" and football tailgating create a lively atmosphere for marketing products, he said.

The agreement includes Chick-fil-A TV commercials during the show and a live shot of a Chick-fil-A fan interaction area. Event staff in "College GameDay" and Chick-fil-A co-branded uniforms will escort a crate carrying the mascot head for Corso's announcement.

And here they come to ruin the best show on the network! I can understand a main sponsor for the show, but naming a cheesy segment that no one really cares about it, is a little much. Soon they'll have cows bringing out the headgear to Corso, while Desmond Howard eats waffle fries. It's only a matter of time.

Chick-fil-A in pick 'em role on ESPN show (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

No announcers have been assigned as of yet, but I thought I would pass along the first full ESPN/ABC College Football schedule. Kickoff Week starts August 25th with College Football Live and our first game is the clash of the titans between Vandy and Miami U. Dari Nowkhah will be studio host in Atlanta with Robert Smith and Trevor Matich and Rece Davis will lead from Los Angeles with Mark May and Lou Holtz. As previously posted, Gameday will originate from Atlanta for the Alabama-Clemson game, but you can expect a bunch of other shows to originate from the city as well that entire week. Pay attention to the "reverse mirror" info at the bottom and I'll fill in the announcers when I get word.

Also, The Pam Ward Chronicles will be back in full force that week and better than ever. I'm searching for a new logo if anyone is good with photoshop email me, but other than that we're ready to go. It's almost here people!

I mentioned at the beginning of the month that the Lions were interested in having hometown boy Gus Johnson call their preseason games. Well it's official. Gus and his jorts are leaving the Eagles and calling games in Detroit before the start of the 2008 season. Oh and he's bringing another friend of the State of Michiagn along, Desmond Howard....

Lions exhibition games will have some new voices as they move to Channel 62: Detroit native Gus Johnson will do the play-by-play with Desmond Howard as the analyst, and Matt Shepard and Lions Hall of Famer Charlie Sanders will do the pregame show.

Johnson, a U-D Jesuit grad, replaces Frank Beckmann, who called the games for Channel 50.

I can't think of a worse person to have as a color analyst in Howard and that's coming from a Michigan fan. The guy is just not quick enough for television. I'm also going to need some video from you Detroitans(?) when get the first, "Calvin Johnson, WITH THE CAAAAAAAATCH!" Good times and sorry Philly for your loss.

What is in the water these days up in Bristol? You've got Simmons calling his bosses out, podcasters arguing online, and now one of you're College Gameday guys has words for another. From The Detroit News via Fanhouse....

Q. What was your take on the Herbstreit's report when he said Miles-to-Michigan was a done deal?

A. I was in Hawaii doing ESPN, so I had no knowledge of anything. I put the (earpiece) in my ear, and I'm hearing Herbstreit break this news, and I'm thinking, 'You know, things happen overnight, maybe it did.' He's a seemingly intelligent guy, so if he's going to say it, I don't think he's going to go out there and blurt it out. He must have believed what he said. Whether it was true or false, there's no doubt in my mind that Herbstreit believed what he was saying on TV.

Now, should he have dug deeper, should ESPN have dug deeper? Of course. They have a Michigan guy on their crew and they knew how to get in contact with me, but no one ever called me.

It put Les in a bad position. That was wrong on so many levels. As a former player, unless I spoke to that coach and he told me it was cool, I would never have done that because he was still coaching a team that's about to play in a (SEC) championship game. ... His team, the first thing they saw when they woke up was that report. It was not fair to him and not fair to the players. ... And no one from this side of the story (at Michigan), as far as I know, came out and refuted it. The only one who said something was Les Miles that day.

Now the only question is what the repercussions will be for a statement like that. Herbstreit is the face of College Football on ESPN and saying he screwed something that big up (let's face it he did), when ESPN never said anything publicly about the mistake, you're going to get a talking to. Keep it up ESPN, you make this "job" so easy at times.

Red On Red: Desmond Howard Criticizes ESPN's Reporting (Fanhouse)

I don't know about you but I was ready for Football to come back around February 15th, so this idea doesn't really bother me. For some of you that welcomed the break from the game this might get under your skin a bit. ESPN is sending their College Football program Gameday to Florida's Spring Game on April 12th.

Oh but that's not all. They're adding a very special correspondent for the festivities...

For the first time, College GameDay Built by The Home Depot will originate from the site of a college football spring game. The popular Saturday morning pre-game show will originate from Gainesville, Fla., for the University of Florida’s spring game Saturday, April 12. Florida is led by 2007 Heisman Trophy quarterback Tim Tebow.

The two-hour College GameDay will be aired from 11 a.m. ET to noon on ESPN2 and noon to 1 p.m. on ESPN. ESPN will televise the spring game following the show at 1 p.m. The show and game coverage will be hosted by Chris Fowler with analysts Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard. ERIN ANDREWS will join them to report from the sidelines during the game. The two-hour game telecast will showcase the school’s final spring football intra-squad scrimmage, and will include interviews with coaches and players.

ESPN is also naming a late night College Football show "College Football Final" which will air late night leading up to the start of the Season. I'm of the more Football coverage the better, but this might get into National Signing Day territory if they take it too seriously.

College Gameday is heading to Eugene, Oregon for the third time ever, and second time this year, this upcoming Saturday.

EUGENE, Ore. – ESPN College GameDay has confirmed it will produce its weekly college football preview show from the University of Oregon for the second time this season prior to the Ducks’ home game vs. Arizona State.

Kickoff for the football game, which is currently slated to be televised locally on the Oregon Sports Network, will be 3:45 p.m. (PDT).

I was hoping it would head to Columbus, Ohio because I will actually be at the Wisconsin-OSU game, but alas no such luck. Going back to Oregon, as the #5 Ducks take on the #4 Arizona State Sun Devils, is definitely the right choice.

Everyone in the nation knows Raymell Rice, so that'd be too easy. Ray will get his yards so I think pressure is on Teel to be accurate and not make mistakes. He can't have another game like he did against Cincy (4 Ints).

Kansas State's Freshman QB #1- Josh Freeman

In his past three games (Col, Tex, Kan) Freeman is averaging 254.6 Yards per game. He's gotten better as the season's gone on, but he's still prone to mistakes he has over a 2-1 Int to TD ratio. If he plays like he did against Texas, K-State can hang around.

Deciding Factor(s): The Rutgers D forcing turnovers.

Obviously Freeman is prone to turnovers, but he's been better of late. Rutgers has one of the top D's in the country and will be all over him. Kansas State wants a high-scoring affair like the Texas game and Rutgers wants it low.

Honestly, I don't. These teams seem pretty damn even to me. They are the perfect polar opposites of each other. When that's the case I usually go with the better defense.....and Cal has zippy.

AA's Pick and Analysis: I'm seeing this one play out as another letdown game. CAL floundered at the end of the season (losing to Arizona is inexcusable) and should have made a better Bowl.

Texas A&M plays great team defense and the option should be good for 300 yards against a suspect CAL Defense.

I got this email from John V. yesterday, and it hurt me to the core. Desmond Howard is our favorite college player ever. Hands down. So you can understand why I was hesitant to post it.....um, that was until I found the video.

From John V: Last night, before the game, they asked the studio guys to pick the pre-New Year's game they were most looking forward to. Desmond Howard selects the Holiday Bowl, and how much he is looking forward to the Cal/Texas game. He then launches into an analysis of how Colt McCoy will fare against the Cal defense. That's all well and good, except for the fact that Cal is playing Texas A&M. None of the other guys in the studio bothered to correct him.

Desmond Howard has been consistently horrible, but this takes it to a new low.



Why Desmond!?!?!?!?! WHY!!!!!!!?????? No, you can't be an Awful Announcer! I refuse to accept it. This never happened.

Update: Apparently I'm slow.....The 12th Manchild already has Howard's Apology from the Bud Hot Seat. I guess it's an apology....Howard says he "mis-spoke" when saying Texas instead of Texas A&M.
