Gameday Heads To Baton Rouge

Monday, November 03, 2008

Here's your weekly post on where Gameday is heading and this one isn't much of a surprise. Chris, Lee, Desmond and Kirk will be heading to Baton Rouge, Louisiana for the Crimson Tide's visit to LSU. More importantly though, it's Nick Saban's return to the team he abandoned....

Just two years later, Saban lied and denied his way from Miami to Tuscaloosa, Ala., while LSU fans cried as he bolted the big time to return to his comfort-zoned college coaching at none other than LSU rival Alabama.

And just two seasons later, Saban, who signed the most lucrative long term guaranteed contract in college football history at $32 million for eight years, has Alabama on top of the world of college football just in the nick of time for his return to the bayou. ESPN's College GameDay show will broadcast live from LSU Saturday morning.

"We want to kick his butt," said veteran LSU fan Gary Perkins of Pineville while at LSU's 35-10 win over Tulane game Saturday night. "I don't respect him. We don't respect him. He's a carpetbagger and a turncoat. I appreciate what he did and what he left us, but we don't respect him. We appreciate having him, but we don't respect him."
Man, that seems like forever ago, but it's good to see the Tigers still hold a grudge. Makes for a better game that way. With that game on CBS, it looks like Herbstreit is going to have to fly into Baton Rouge this week and then head right back to Lubbock, TX after Gameday to call the OK State-Tech game late Saturday night. Well either that or ESPN will try to make CAL-USC relevant, but I don't see that happening.

LSU fans appreciate a guy they disrespect? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

Looking ahead to next week, Gameday could end up in a number of places. Florida-USC if they want to stay SEC. No real intriguing Big 12 matchups. Maryland-UNC in the ACC could be a dark horse. Other than that, USC-Stanford is the only other intriguing matchup, but that doesn't seem likely

How long do you have to be a fan of a team to be considered a "veteran fan"?

LSU fans will be more p***ed than usual because it's on CBS. They *SO* wanted this to be a night game.

I don't know where they are going to put that caravan of a set they have now. The parade ground (where they setup the last few times) will be occupied by the ROTC graduation/ memorial ceremony. And the PMAC ramp is now occupied by the booster club.

It'll be a split schedule for the 8 PM game. West Coast (Pac-Ten) gets Cal-SoCal while rest of the nation gets Oklahoma State-Texas Tech.

ESPN only chose this game because it will satisfy SEC fans. They've spent three weeks in a row in Big 12 country and didn't want to go there for a fourth straight week. Without a doubt, the biggest game of the week is in Lubbock. LSU isn't even that great this season and should lose to Alabama.

I for one thought that they went overboard with the SEC earlier this year, especially when they chose Auburn/Vanderbilt which now looks like the deciding game as to who will play in the Liberty Bowl.

When will the economy catch up with Disney/ESPN and Kirk will be forced to stay in one place on Saturdays? Is he that much of an analytical god he has to do Gameday and then be in place for the "game of the week?" Can't Brent Musberger just man the booth by himself?...I know he probably secretly wishes for that anyway.
