NFL Open Thread - Week 11 Late Games

Sunday, November 16, 2008

LT and Troy meet on the field in the late slate.

What we've seen so far today:

  • The Raiders just lost 17-15 to Miami thanks to some majorly incompetent play calling and time management from Tom Cable, saving Tony Sparano from his atrocious special teams.
  • In another case of crappy teams covering, the Lions were actually up on Carolina early, and just recently, were a two-point conversion away from tying the game when Daunte Culpepper fumbled the conversion try (he got face masked something fierce and it wasn't flagged.) 31-22, Panthers.
  • Broncos' defense gets a hold. Matty Ice just threw an incomplete on fourth down at the Denver 45 after Jay Cutler hit Daniel Graham in the end zone on the previous drive. Fullback Peyton Hillis has two TDs for the Donkeys in service as the emergency first-string tailback. WOOOOO, PIG, SOOOOEY. 24-20, Denver. Michael Turner is still the Burner -- scoring twice for the Falcons in the losing cause.
  • Jeff Garcia throws for 255 yards, no picks, one score from an RB, and TB is winning the kicker battle against Minny. 19-13, Bucs.
  • Brandon Jacobs runs over people. 30-10, Giants over Ravens, as the NY pass rush makes Joe Flacco throw two picks.
  • KC's lousy defense is going to cost them another good Tyler Thigpen start. He's thrown two TDs to Dwayne Bowe, but he isn't Drew Brees, who's thrown for 260, a TD and a pick, but has also handed it off to Pierre Thomas and Deuce McAllister for scores. Saints, 30-20.
  • 37-3, Packers. Absolutely no offense for the Bears, and Aaron Rodgers has thrown for 2 TDs. A 54-yard fumble return for a TD also added to the Pack's total.
  • Sage Rosenfels just gave the game away again. His first turnover of the game against Indy comes on a last second drive, after both Steve Slaton and Ahman Green did the bulk of the scoring. Peyton Manning threw two TDs, Addai got one. 33-27, Indy wins.
  • Philly is tied with Cincy mostly thanks to three picks thrown by Donovan McNabb.
That is an AWFUL set of afternoon games for Fox. Wow. Nothing but NFC West. Yikes. I'll be watching the Chargers fail in Pittsburgh. No one should be subjected to Rams-Niners, ever.

CBS:

San Diego at Pittsburgh - Jim Nantz, Phil Simms
Tennessee at Jacksonville - Dick Enberg, Randy Cross

Fox:

Arizona at Seattle - Dick Stockton, Brian Baldinger, Laura Okmin
St. Louis at San Francisco - Matt Vasgersian, JC Pearson, Nischelle Turner

I don't know how Troy Polamalu scooped that tipped pass with one freakin' hand, but if the call stands up, that's amazing.

I heard he had dinner this week with Vince Lombardi.

The Cardinals will win 63-0.....this is the worst defense ever.

there is going to be a tie in the bengals eagles game. What a horrible game to watch. Eagles should not get into the playoffs.

Albert/Johnston/Siragusa at Giants/Cards next week. Or "battle of the first place powers" as FOX's

sheldon brown just gave the game to the bengals with a late hit. Sugar Shayne just needs to kick it.

Bungles miss FG with :07 left in OT. Hail Mary by Iggles incomplete.
Game over. ITS A TIE !!

daryl johnston said during the eagles game that a tie won't really affect the eagles because they are playing an AFC opponent. He said that it will be the divsion and conference tiebreakers that matter. Um, hey Daryl, who is going to be in a tie with the eagles when they have a tie in their overall record. I hate Daryl Johnston.

Yes, the Iggles are toast.

If you can't get a chip shot FG in OT on the freaking Bengals...you're not a good team. You just aren't.

That Eagles game was quite possibly one of the worst games I've ever had to sit through. And we didn't even lose! Completely forget that we had to deal with Tony Siragusa for 4 hours. Bad, just bad. No team should play that bad against Cincinnati. It should be a law. Really.

Back from work...and I want the 3 and a half hours of my life back after that atrocious performance by the Bengals and (ESPECIALLY) the Birds. How bad was it? Well, here's my list of the three worst Eagles games I've ever seen.

3) PHI - BAL 10-10 Tie (1997) As a 13 year old, I may have uttered one of my first profanity ridden tirades.

2) PHI loses to GB 3-0 (2002?) - It didn't help that Ray Bentley was doing play by play for the game

1) Today's clusterfuck! I swear to God if I see McNabb smile after another incomplete pass...

You know it's bad when Derrick Gunn on CSN's Eagles Post Game Live pretty much calls out Andy Reid saying that the one thing he's learned is never to believe a thing Andy Reid says.

Even though I knew it would be a tie game when i heard Merrill Reese say, "We're going to overtime", it's still mind boggling.

Correction on the GB - PHI listing above of mine, it was a 6-3 GB win...my mind's fried from 8 hours of work, and a bungling game.

It didn't help that Ray Bentley was doing play-by-play for that game.

And the fact that Kenny, Moose, and Goose did this game did help?

Okay, Kenny Albert is bearable, but Moose and Goose (especially Goose, the Worst Analyst In Football)

Seeing as I missed most of the SD-PIT game thus far because I sat through the Clusterfuck, I'm just curious how many times Nantz and Simms mentioned the fact that the Chargers suck on the east coast?

Justin F. said...
Nov 16, 2008, 5:32:00 PM

jfein, Kenny's a decent play by play guy when you get by the fact that he merely is channeling his father poorly.

Ray Bentley, bad as he is with Pam Ward now, was far worse as a play by play guy alongside Ron Pitts.

JFein - nothing on that yet.

And Rivers floats another one for his second pick of the day.

@ jim williams: The only job Ray Bentley is good at is an analyst for arena football. That seems to be his niche.

Ah, it looks like the San Diego Padres are leading the Pittsburgh Pirates, 7-5.

Just announced that Eagles-Cardinals NFL network game will be on 6ABC locally in Philadelphia.

Also announced: The Eagles will wear their black unis on Thanksgiving night. Hey, what about the 1980 NFC Championship duds?

@ jamescraven: I'd love to see those unies again (the green ones). My favorite memory of the Eagles black uniforms was in the Monday blowout to Seattle when John Madden said the Eagles were wearing green.

Maybe they chose the black because that game will serve as an official mourning for our season which ended today (and hopefully, this will serve as the beginning of the end for Andy Ried).

@ SSReporters: Wow....Jon Runyan is an offensive lineman for the Philadelphia Eagles. The meds at the nursing home must be greatly affecting Dick Stockton.

Well, now I know where Andy Ried gets his play calling from...

Are the Rams even an NFL team? They're losing 35-3....to the 49ers!

I really wish I could be watching the Titans game right about now....

And just when the Seahawks were still in this game, it's 26-7 and you know what? I'm sorta happy.

Mike Holmgren has been overrated for years now, he is the most conservative guy in the history of football and he's just plain stubborn.

I just hope this team moves away so this can get me out of my misery.

Nov 16, 2008, 6:28:00 PM

@ Jamescraven: That would be the best case scenario. For the Eagles, that is. For the Rams, yeah, that's your worst case scenario.

And Holmgren has been glorified for the past 12 years because of that Super Bowl win in Green Bay. In a "What have you done for me lately" world, Holmgren's done squat.

Justin F. said...
Nov 16, 2008, 6:33:00 PM

JFreak - yes, but you throw a pick at the end of the game when you've been reliable on offense (or at least in dispensing it to Slaton and Green) and you can give the game away.

This is quite possibly the most scintillating 8-7 game ever. Please let SD lose like this.

@ anon @ 6:44: Obviously there's a difference but I actually encountered a few people today who didn't know regular season NFL games could end in a tie. That's not really a rule that you spend a lot of time thinking about.

Get ready Jamescraven, Olbermann will definitley make fun of that after the highlights when they go to the press conference.

@ SSR: Don't forget Magic Man Jon Runyan. He started the day as an offensive lineman for the Eagles playing in Cincinnati, now he's in Seattle punting.
