You Could Say That Jack Edwards Was A Little "Over-The-Top" Last Saturday

Thursday, November 06, 2008

Former ESPN Sports Center Anchor, Jack Edwards has been the Bruins play-by-play guy for a few years now, so you could understand some level of attachment to the team. On Saturday though, he was probably a bit over-the-top. The Bruins were in the midst of a handful of fights following several cheap shots by the Dallas Stars, and for eight minutes, Jack completely loses it. Watch for such highlights as Edwards calling a player a "scud", the announcer mentioning the Hanson Brothers and actually using the words, "having his kisser rearranged"....

While there were a lot of cheap shots in there, calling players cowards and flipping out like that was just a little too much. I've gotten a few emails saying people complained to NESN, so Jack just might want to reel it in a bit.

Edwards is a huge Bruin homer but this was ridiculous.

"Wants to tear him limb from limb and who wouldn't want that."

Nice one Jack.

Embarrasing.

Not to mention the hit by Avery was more from the side than from behind..

Jokers.

Edwarda is a life-long Bruins fan, grew up in New Hampshire, went to UNH, etc. So thats where his love of the Bruins comes from.

"Rip that guy limb from limb. Who wouldn't want to see that?"

Chill pill time for Mr. Edwards.

And it will be awesome.

I like it. Ott was a coward. In every sense of the word.

Claude Lemieux thinks Ott is a pussbag.

I've heard Gus go more crazy than Edwards...

This world is so pussy, so PC..I see no problem with it at all..All i know about NHL is that Sean Avery is hated and a dick bag, so to see him get involved, and get his clock cleaned, is not really a surprise to me..
I never watch hockey, but this might actually turn me to the game...I found no problem with it, Steve Ott or whatever did run out of there too quick

Edwards should work with the commentator from The U that wanted to fight FIU.

Avery and Ott are the two most ridiculous cheap shot artists in the NHL. Don Cherry HATES Sean Avery with many others who do as well. What he did vs. the Devils last year that completely made the sport look ridiculous. People love Sean Avery cause he has dated some hotties but he's a friggin joke. He won't drop the gloves when he's challenged sometimes cause he's worried about his modeling career.

What Jack Edwards was saying was definitely homerism, but he is calling the game for the Bruins, and what he was saying was something that I'm sure most Bruins fans were thinking themselves. I don't think this is over the line considering this is the Bruins Broadcast. They're expected to be homers.

"Matty Niskanen's not gonna be a pretty little boy anymore"...wow.

But really, should we expect anything less from the announcer that gave us all "Mine eyes have seen the glory!" back in the 2002 World Cup?

That was some hilarious stuff from Jack Edwards!

Maybe it all sounded strange to me because we don't hear these comments on the Kings or Ducks broadcasts here in southern California. And it all goes back to the sensitivity of the announcers here, who recognize that many times, viewers come to see the opposing team play as much as their own. Look in the stands of Staples Center the next time the Kings play the Rangers, for example. Neither Bob Miller or John Ahlers would get away with what Edwards did last Saturday night.

P.S. The analyst on the tape is Andy Brickley, and the fan cameo refers to the Patriots-Colts game the next night.

Boston media figures/fans/ whoever need to grow thicker skin. Anytime that an opposing team, coach or whoever does something like this to a Boston team, the Chowds are instantaneously offended. Grow a pair (well, the men anyway) and reemember that Boston teams don't have some mystical sense of entitlement. It's nice to see New England teams for the most part coming back to earth.

I don't see what the problem is at all. The only problem I see is hockey. I think the fighting makes the sport look embarrasing, and it's why I won't watch it.

@ anon @ 1:57: It is extremely rare that hockey games end up like this one did between the Bruins and the Stars.

As far as Jack Edwards goes, That. Was. Hilarious. Regardless of the cheap shots that Ott took, he's still a human being and Edwards sounded like him to leave the TD Banknorth Garden on a stretcher. Nonetheless, as I said above, that little bit of screaming homerism was hilarious, in every sense of the word.

It was a case of homerism but I HIGHLY DOUBT any Bruins fans called NESN to complain. Theyve been dying for years to see that and Edwards just jacked up the intensity a bit.

The problem is the pussification of hockey and when as Brickley put it "old school hockey" shows up people are stunned.

I stopped watching NHL hockey ten yrs ago but damn that was entertaining and as a teenage I was at the WHA game between the Whalers and the Fighting Saints that featured a bench clearing brawl along wth penalty box fights.

The voices on that are Bob Neumier (pbp) and Bill Rasmussen (the man who started ESPN).

God I miss hockey.

I think I am stuck in a strange mix of attitudes, where I disagree that less fights and roughing in hockey is a bad thing and making hockey "pussier", but I also don't have a problem with a home announcer getting riled up about the away team; it makes for good listening, in my opinion, makes one feel more like part of the game despite not being at the arena.

what's the deal with the guy wearing the "I hate peyton manning" t-shirt?

Anonymous said...
Nov 6, 2008, 4:35:00 PM

It's not like the guy is supposed to be a journalist, he's an announcer and a well-established Bruins fan.

I thought the Stars were a joke in that game. They're going after people with cheap shots, going at people's knees, etc. Do you think Cam Neely's knee is far from the minds of most real Bruins fans? You think we want to see Dallas pull an Ulf Samuelsson on Thornton or Lucic and then refuse to fight?

Edwards went over the top, true, but Dallas needs to man up if they want to play that kind of cheap hockey. It's disgraceful. Sean Avery can go back to stitching matching blouses for him and his girlfriends.

Anybody who's a real hockey fan knows that you dont go for another player's knees.

That's absolute chicken-shit.

I think the announcer was being kind.

Jack Edwards is a nice enough guy, but certainly prone to hyperbole. And he's just the latest in a LONG line of homer Bruins announcers with a failing grasp of reality (Fred Cusek and Derek "So Drunk I Sleep On Park Benches" Sanderson). That said, Avery makes Ken Linesman look like a stand-up guy. Whattapussy.

I've met Edwards, and he is a great guy, but, DAMN, I have never heard him go off like that. He was sort of right to do so. Avery's just lucky that his team got on Savard right away. It would have been pretty bad to see five guys on one, but, hell, Marty McSorley almost had six guys beating his ass after the final buzzer in Vancouver 8 years ago. Anyone notice Tim Thomas leaving his crease during that fight? Probably wanted a piece of Turco.

Go fuck yourself whoever thinks this shit is one sided. And fuck you to whoever made this site, stop fucking your mom and get out into the real world where if you say dumb shit to people, theyll fuck you up. Eat shit.

jack edwards does not know the definition of a "dangle" he constantly throws this word out so much for even the slightest bit of stick handling. he even says it when a player tries to stick handle and loses it, which is the total opposite of a dangle. it gets very annoying if you pay attention to it
