ESPN Isn't Exactly Expecting Big Numbers On MNF Tonight

Monday, November 10, 2008

Why in the world ESPN would ever schedule a 49ers-Cardinals Monday Night Game is beyond me but that's exactly what we're getting tonight. You can expect some pretty low numbers as far as ratings go tonight, but ESPN knows that, and they don't really seem to be concerned....

Despite the NFL's immense popularity among TV viewing audiences in America, ESPN executives told Arizona State University students Friday that it is still a challenge to get the nation to care about the game.

Visiting with students at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication in Phoenix, ESPN Monday Night Football producer Jay Rothman and director Chip Dean spoke of the weekly task of creating content and story lines that appeal beyond a local level.

"It's more of a national kind of scope we put on the game and games like Arizona and San Francisco are more challenging," Rothman said, referring to this week's Monday night game between the Cardinals and the 49ers, two teams that lack the national profile of the Dallas Cowboys or the New England Patriots.
For reasons that have nothing to do with the crapiness level of this game, I won't be doing a live-blog tonight, but after reading that....I'm almost glad I'm not. If you're watching, expect a lot of talk about teams other than the ones on the field and maybe some presidential anecdotes from Tony throughout the night. Feel free to use this spot as your open thread, and I'll see you tomorrow with video and comments, and try to enjoy the game if you're taking it in.

When you look at some of the games that are on Monday night, I wonder if for 2 reasons they do this, like what a previous poster putting bad games is that still some people do not get ESPN and like to be fair. My 2nd reason is that I wonder if the NFL hates the way ESPN does Monday Night Football, like in previous years always guest they would have come in, they don't have top notch announcing crew, Kornheiser bad, and Tirico on his radio show, was shocked when more people watched Colts vs Titans than the World Series game, I think you would be happy. Future games to look forward to, Bills vs Browns next week and Texans vs Jaguars.

Pretty sad how far the 49ers have fallen. A few years back they certainly had the national profile of NE or Dallas. Sucking does that to a team.

I think each team is required to have at least one nationally televised game, either a Sunday night, Monday night, Thursday, or Saturday. For the teams they don't really like, they'll throw them to the Lions on Thanksgiving (if that's the right network) or hide them on a Monday night when most people have better things to do.

Steve: Cardinals
Emmitt: Cardinals
Stuart: Cardinals
Coach Ditka: Cardinals
Sheshawn: Cardinals
Cris: Cardinals
TJ: Cardinals
Boomer: Cardinals (and he gives us a scord of 31-16)

And the map of who people in each state thinks is going to win looks exactly like the map of election day...

The Cards take the kickoff to the 25 and here comes Warner.

1st and 10 and Warner fires it to Preston (?...I don't follow the Cards) for 22. 1st and 10 and Fitzgerald with a short completion. Hightower takes the carry and 3rd and 3 is coming up.

3rd and 4 and Warner from the gun fires it to Irvin who catches it over the middle and the Cards are at the 30.

Hightower takes it to the outside for a dozen and the Cards are in the red zone. 1st and 10 and Warner hits Irvin for 8. Hightower takes the 2nd down carry back to the line of scrimmange and it's 3rd down again.

Warner rolls to the right and overthrows a wide-open Larry Fitzgerald in the endzone.

Here's Rackers from 28....Right down the middle 7-3 49ers

Shaun Hill is starting only his 3rd game. 1st down goes for 8. 2nd down is a handoff that goes nowhere.

Wildcat formation on 3rd down and Robinson picks up a 1st.

Stupid phonecall...missed a couple plays. Anyway, it's now 3rd and 7 and Hill goes underneath for a couple and the 49ers will have to punt.

Preston with an impressive return to the 30 yard line and now maybe this game will revert to the form it's supposed to revert to.

We are reminded that this game is also available on ESPN Deportes, which according to Dr. Kornheiser, means his laundry is done. I apologize.

1st down gets 5 and on 2nd down Boldin takes a direct snap from the wild cat for a couple.

"Do you know who named the wild cat? Obviously, the guy wasn't named wild cat" - Dr. Kornheiser

3rd down is incomplete and the 49ers force a 3 and out. Impressive.

The punt is shanked and the Niners will be taken over at their own 49.

Yay, the Singletary rant again. What exactly are we calling that?

Oops, that was meant to be 39, not 49. 1st down gets a couple. 2nd down and Hill throws at the feet of a Cardinal facing enormous pressure. 3rd and 8....

Hill passes underneath for the first down to Jason Hill

Handoff to Robinson on first down gets a couple. 2nd and 8 and Hill's pass is knocked away by ex-Eagle Roderick Hood. 3rd and long...

"He's 20 years younger than Isaac Bruce" - Dr. Kornheiser

3rd down pass to Hill is ruled incomplete though will most likely be challenged. And they are challenging. It looks like the call on the field will correct.

We are back and the ref is still under the hood. He comes out and announces what our boys in the booth had already said. He got both feet in but he dropped it upon hitting the ground. Everyone missed it on the sideline.

Lee punts it in the endzone for the touchback and here comes Warner.

Justin F. said...
Nov 10, 2008, 9:13:00 PM

From the 20, 1st and 10 and Warner will hand it to Edgerrin James for a couple.

"He was benched last week and didn't get any action at all" - Dr. Kornheiser on Edgerrin James.

2nd down and the pass is deflected and nearly picked off! Man that would have been huge. 3rd and 7. Scratch that, 3rd and 12. Someone for the Cards got a bit excited and jumped the gun. Warner's pass is incomplete and it's 3 and out again for the Cards. Damn, what's happening to this offense against the Niners? The NINERS!

A reverse on the punt return will set the Niners up with good field position. Now if only San Fran's offense can channel the intensity the special teams and defense is playing with.

Why does Thursday Night Football, well, have to be on Thursday Nights. Not a great night.

Breaston on the punt reture nad he took a shot at around the 20.

1st and 10 Cards. Warner rolls to his right and fires it to Breaston who makes the catch along the sideline for 11. Boldin from the wildcat takes it up the middle for another 11 and another first down.

Oh yay, more doctor talk from, well, Dr. Kornheiser.

Warner with a swing to Hightower and it gets a couple. 2nd down.

Has Jaws mentionned anything about penetration yet. Wow...

Warner completes it to Breaston who gets 3 or 4. 3rd and 3 as Dr. K reminds us that we were wrong in thinking that Warner's career was done.

"The last image of Warner in St. Louis was him on all fours like Mike Tyson against Buster Douglas" - Dr. K

Another Warner completion. Another AZ first down. Hightower on the carry LOSES THE BALL AND....

1st down is an incompletion. HIghtower picks up "3 and a half" according to Tirico and it's 3rd down 6.5.

Warner hands it off to Boldin who gains a couple and the fans have everyright to wonder why Ken Whisenhunt was channeling Andy Ried.

Niners ball. 1st down from the 23 and it's nearly intercepted! 2nd down and Hill hands it to Gore who gets 4. And Tony Kornheiser is re-telling what Emmitt Smith said, in slightly better English.

3rd down and the 49ers got a wee, bit eager. Move 'em back 5, ref. 3rd and 11...

Shaun Hill on the QB draw to his left takes it to the outside, LOSES HIS HELMET! And he gets the first! What a run!

Hill hands it off to Gore with 1:15 left and no timeouts. He gets 9. 3rd and 1 Hill to Johnson picks up the first and he gets out of bounds!

And Dr. Kornheiser is going gaga over the Niners.

1st and 10 from the 18 with 46 seconds left. Hill fires it to the turf monster. Cards and fans want a grounding penalty but won't get it. Outside the tackle box.

2nd and 10. Hill...under pressure...fires it out of bounds. There was a man there that time.

Yeah, Weinke was drafted by the Panthers in a rather dumb move considering his advanced age. Yet, he apparently started the last game for San Fran... last year. Yes, he played in 2007. There's no word on where he is now, except that it's probably at some loading dock.

Wow, what a great f'ing catch. Not a great f'ing TD celebration, though. I think Singletary just told Davis, "If you ever hug me again, Vernon, I'll Goddamn murder you!"

Unsportamanlike conduct on Davis for taking his helmet off in the kickoff and we see Davis and Singletary on the sidelines....hugging??? How cute, Singletary forgives him. Let's see if he comes out for the 2nd half...

Irvin tries to field the kick, and it goes off his hands and out of bounds. Cards ball at the 12 and their lining up forom the gun? There's 26 seconds left.

Short gain to Fitzgerald and that'll do it for the first half as the boo birds rain down at University of Phoenix Stadium.

21-13 49ers at the half.

Lessons learned by Andy Reid tonight:

1. Some coaches actually know how to challenge plays and WIN the challenge. The key is choosing to challenge plays that have a remote chance of being overturned.

2. A head coach taking off his pants in front of his team in the locker room will promote inspirational play by his team during their next game. Not a pretty image.

Vernon Davis is back on the field. Singletary's a hypocrite! Not really, but you get the joke, I hope....

Nedney kicks it off and here's Breason channeling Rossum until he's shoved out of bounds by Rossum at the 39.

Warner to Fitzgerald who makes the catch and then takes a huge hit! Gain of 9. 2nd and 1. Warner throws to Breaston over the middle to the 33-yd line! 1st down Cards and they're lookin' good to start the 2nd half.

1st and 10 Warner to Fitzgerald for 5 and we have a flag and Singletary's not happy. And Nate Clements just channeled Davis

"That should win an academy award. Beautiful acting." - Jaws on the drawing of the penalty.

Warner to Fitzgerald to the 10. 2nd and 6. Warner to Irvin and he'll be a yard shy of the 1st. 3rd and 1....

Handoff to Hightower and he's close after a gain of 1. Let's see, they mark it a bit short.

Jaws says kick a field goal, I say you only live once, might as well go for it. Yeah, I just channeled Russian Roulette from GSN. Good times....good times.

Cards look like they're going to listen to me...

Rackers with a pop-up kick that's fielded by the tight end who takes it to the 43.

And Suzy was shy to ask if Singletary dropped trou again.

1st down and HILL IS NEARLY INTERCEPTED! The turf monster saved the day there. 2nd and 10 and Josh Morgan makes a catch for 6. 3rd down coming up. Hill from the gun hands it off to Gore and they have a fresh set of downs.

1st and 10 and Morgan makes a catch for 7. 2nd & 2. Gore hurdles tacklers and picks up another first for the 49ers.

And we find out that Hill played 5 years with the Vikes and took 2 snaps. Both kneeldowns.

Hill...GOING FOR IT ALL ON 1ST DOWN....Incomplete. 2nd and 10. Hill hands it to Gore up the middle and he gets 9. 3rd and 1 and it will all depend on forward progress. They say he's short, and not in height, that is.

And they're going for it...wait, no, field goal. Here comes Nedney from 41. It's up, hooking slightly, but Good! 24-20 San Fran

The Eagles problem isn't the lack of TO. He's a problem child everywhere he goes. IMHO, Philly's problems are:

1. Overrated QB - their best season in the past 3 years was when Garcia came on to lead them to the playoffs.

2. They have no idea how to use Westbrook. He gets put in too many situations to take a beating and then end up hurt.

Mal said...

1st down and Warner connects with Boldin for a gain of 16. 1st and 10 again for the Cards. Warner's on fire this half. Hightower on the carry doesn't get a whole lot.

"Do you notice Mike, how excited Jaws gets when he likes the quarterback when they're doing well?" - Dr. Kornheiser in a creepy voice.

Warner to Hightower for 5. 3rd down for the Cards.

"Do you think it's in thier contract that they have to have equality?" - Dr. Kornheiser on the fact that all of the AZ receivers at that point had 7 receptions.

Warner to Hightower for the first down. Irvin catches it from Warner for a gain of 9 but there's a flag on the play. Roughing the passer. That's an extra 15 and the Cards are at the SF 27.

Ex-Eagle Takeo Spikes takes out Hightower in the backfield for a loss of 3. 2nd and the unlucky number. Warner gets dropped! Penalty down...face mask?

No, offsetting penalties and we'll replay 2nd and That Unlucky Number. Warner to Boldin for a first down but there's another hanky. Gain of 20, but that's negated by an offensive pass interference. Wishy-washy call.

2nd and 23. Warner throws and it's dropped by Breason. 3rd and a mile...

Warner hands it off to Hightower for 3 yards and the fans are livid and I don't blame them. Trust me.

2nd and goal from the 8 and we have an encroachment that will move it up to the 4, but a false start on the Cards will move it back 5.

Warner to Hightower on the handoff and he takes it to the 5 and another penalty. Yeah, the refs definitley put the over.

"A lot of zebra meetings tonight. Those are the refs, Tony." - Jaws to Dr. Kornheiser who apparently is yet to pick up that zebras = refs.

It's already taken.

3rd down, it's tipped and dropped and we have 4th down. Breaston makes the fair catch at the 9 yard line and the Cards have yet another chance to take the lead.

1st down and Warner goes underneath to Hightower for 3.

"Arizona's gotta win this game to have credibility in this league." - Dr. Kornheiser

Really? One game is that big?

1st and 10 and Boldin makes the catch for a 1st down at the 34 yard line. Here's Hightower who runs into a 49er wall consisting of Ex-Eagle Takeo Spikes. No gain.

2nd and 10 and Warner drops back fires and caught by Boldin for 16 into Niner territory. And the Niners are on the ropes, folks! My apologies for that channeling of Brent Musberger.

Warner again throws and Boldin nearly made the catch of the century! 2nd down. Oh shoot, I just realized I was calling Urban, Irvin. Again, I don't follow the Cards or the Niners that much. My bad. Hope the Cardinals fans weren't offended. All 39 of them (I'm kidding).

We have 3rd and 10 and Warner airs it out and it's dropped by Fitzgerald. 4th down and the Cardinals squander a huge chance.
