World Series Game Five Live-Blog
Monday, October 27, 2008
I can't remember the last time I live-blogged a Baseball game, but we're going to give it a shot tonight. Hopefully I don't bore you too much and I can keep your attention for the better part of the game. I'll also be flipping over to Football when there's a break, so keep those updates coming if you're watching the game. It's the Rays, It's the Phils....and it's on Fox....NEXT (or around 8:35pm after Daryl Hall sings the National Anthem)!
Alright. Joe Buck is on camera giving his whole "no one thought the Rays would be here" speech for the 15th time this Series, so that means we're about ready to get going. McCarver just mentioned that Maddon has moved Crawford up into the two spot, which is seemingly where he should have been all postseason.
28 years Philly! Are you ready?
Stat of the night: The rays are 0-6 when the temprature is below 50 degrees. As posted on FOX, the game time temprature is 44 degrees. (James Craven)
This pregame music is definitely less than inspiring. (Anon)
It really is. It's like the Oscars music, only nowhere near as good and even more annoying. Rocco Baldelli is on lineup duty and has to deal with a damning "Rays in World Series: .187 Team Avg" graphic. That's not good at all.
"The Ford Keys To The Game" are for the Phils to not let up, and for the Rays to get big hits early and "rise from the ashes". Do people even read this stuff before they write it?
Top of the First:
Cole Hamels gets Iwamura on a flyout, Crawford on a groundout and Upton on a groundout. That was quick...one, two, three.
"Cole Hamels may never have this chance again."- Tim McCarver
Huh? It's not like he's Jamie Moyer. The kid is 24!
How many times are we going to hear the "Rocky" theme tonight? I say atleast 5 times. (Via Anon)
Am I having a stroke, or did Tim Macarver just start speaking a completely different, hitherto unknown or unheard of language? (Via Anon)
It's very possible.
Bottom of the First:
Donovan McNabb is on the Phillies lineup complete with some money glasses. Joe Buck correctly points out that Donovan was poked in the eye during yesterday's game. Kazmir falls behind to J-Roll but gets it back full with a close call on the inside. Rollins then flies out to left.
Tony Kornheiser just made a really bad joke where he said "The Titans haven't been in the spotlight in a long time for something that didn't involve Elvis impersonators." Kill me now. Buck/McCarver, or Kornheiser? Choices... very bad choices. (Via Anon)
Ugh....I'm almost glad I'm missing that thing. Werth draws a walk with one out and Utley is coming to the plate. Kazmir decides to hit the second baseman and that brings up Howard with 2 on and 1 out.
"They had the worst record in baseball last year, we've worn out that stat" - Joe Buck (Via JFein)
Howard falls behind and K's on a fastball on the inner half. Kazmir is working it in there at 94mph now. The hitless ladies man, Burrell is your batter now. Patty draws a walk and Shane-O-Mac is at the plate with the bases loaded and two outs.
Line drive and Victorino drives in two! 2-0 Phils.
Feliz up and he rips a pitch straight back. He was all over that fastball. Pedro follows that up with a line drive single to left, but he hit it too hard for Steve Smith the 3rd Base Coach to send Burrell. Bases Loaded again....
McCarver says the Rays should get someone up in the pen, but Ruiz flies out. Cue the Rocky Theme! 2 Runs, 1 Hit, 1 Walk, 1 HBP....2-0 Phillies.
Why can't Fox find any other music besides the damn Rocky theme? (Via 49er16)
WHY DOES TONY KORNHIESER NEVER TAKE A SICK DAY!?! (Via Frank T. Tank)
He did earlier this year actually.
"In many ways, it is easier to hit a pitcher when he is wild." - Tim McCarver (Via JFein)
"Kerry Collins steps up in the pocket, and he can still stroke it." - Ron Jaworski (Via SS)
Top of the Second:
I don't think the Simpsons "Tree House of Horrors" commercial has been played as much as the Frank TV spot on TBS....but it's close. Pena tries to bunt his way on and hits it right to Ryan Howard and that's immediately followed up with a flyout by Longoria. Navarro draws a two-out walk and Baldelli will be your batter....He pops out to Utley and Cole Hamels is flying through the top of innings tonight.
At this point, "Eye of the Tiger" would be welcome relief. (Via Rob in WI)
Amen.
Bottom of the Second:
Hamels, Rollins and Werth due up, and that pitch count for Hamels sits at an amazing thirteen through two innings. Cole goes down on three pitches....one down. Victorino, who's mic'd up, talks to Werth about the wind and that can't be fun to deal with tonight. Rollins then flies out to right field on cue, but it's not a problem for Baldelli.
@ AA: I'm pretty sure the Family Guy commercial with Stewie high on soda has been played as much as the Frank TV ads. (Via JFein)
Touche.
To make things interesting, they should have switched out McCarver and Kornheiser for these 2 games. I mean, a Kornheiser/Buck Duo??? Could it get any better? And McCarver could say the same exact things he would be saying in the baseball game and still would make just as much sense! (Via Keith)
I think my head would explode if that actually went down. Werth is battling with Kazmir and has the starter up to eight pitches before singling to left. Great at-bat. That gets Utley to the plate with two outs. Pop up....no damage done. Still 2-0 Phillies after two.
"I think that 4:00 tomorrow would be a good time for you to stop by a Taco Bell." - Joe Buck admitting even he doesn't like Tim McCarver
Hahaha....that one actually made me laugh out loud. Indy just got a TD (Manning to Clark) and they're up 7-3 nearing the end of the first.
Top of the Third:
Hamels mows gets Bartlett to groundout and has Kazmir and Iwamura left to deal with this inning. Joe Buck is annoying with me his whole "check on ______" schtick, whenever someone grounds out. I'm also getting annoyed with the whole FOX sponsors thing in the middle of the inning. I haven't noticed them missing a pitch yet, but it's certainly distracting.
"He really does himself a favor by throwing strike one." - Joe Buck (Via J)
Thanks Captain Obvious. Iwamura gets a single up the middle and there goes your no-hitter. Crawford up and he ground the first pitch right to Utley. Howard, Burrell and Victorino are up next half inning.
Bottom of the Third:
Credit where due: I think that kind of "behind the scenes" thing, having the umps mic'd and talking about the first base line is one of the better things Fox Sports does...The other of course is scooping Chris Mortenson. (Via Rob in WI)
I certainly agree. Hamels up to a whopping 33 pitches through three innings. Howard strikes out on three straight pitches and he looks to be struggling with the lefty on lefty matchup tonight. Burrell pops it up to Baldelli for out number two and Victorino follows with a K of his own. Finally a quick inning for Kaz.
0 Runs, 0 Hits, 0 Errors.
I submit the Holidy Inn Express commercial with Cal and the fake security guard who needs to be punched in the face as the beisbol Fox Caliendo. (Via Rob)
Yes, yes...that one too.
Top of the Fourth:
Upton, Pena, Longoria due up for the Rays. Buck tells us that rain is picking up and looking at the map, that should be the last of it for the night. Upton grounds to short.
"Honest, thoughtful and straight."- Tim McCarver on Joe Maddon
Now what does his sexuality have to do with anything, Tim? Pena crushes one of the wall and that's a double for the Ray. Longoria with a shot now with one down.
His leap was there but his windage was off."- Tim McCarver on Werth's attempt at catching the ball.
What the hell is "windage"?!?!?
Longoria singles past Rollins and Tampa is on the board....2-1 Phils.
A 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Navarro ends the inning. 1 run on two hits and no errors.
Bottom of the Fourth:
Bottom of the lineup coming up for the Phils and the rain has really started to pick up now. Feliz goes down and Kaz has five Ks now....
"I think the Titans need to win this game more because they're a small market and if you dont they stop talking about you." - Kornheiser
Why is that a bad thing? Ruiz laces one to left field and Hamels is coming up with a runner on first and one down. Hamels tries to bunt and oh no!!!!!!!! It hits his pitching hand! Doesn't appear to be bothering him on the next pitch though as he bunts it back to Kazmir who guns out Ruiz running to second. Hamels gets a coat and will be on first with one out.
"It appeared to hit the knuckle and not the tip, which would be better for Hamels. You would think."- Tim McCarver
Really, Tim? Really??? Rollins up....and good lord do those fans have to be miserable right about now with that cold, rain and wind. Ugh. Rollins walks and there's two on with two out and Werth coming to the plate.
Hamels hit in the pitching hand. Philly collapse in... 3....2.......1.... (Rob in WI)
If they stop this game because of the rain. Do you think Buck finally goes crazy? (Via 49er16)
I'm praying for it actually. McCarver tries to explain the difference a 4-seam and 2-seam fastball and I think I actually just became a little dumber trying to listen to that. 3-2 to Werth....fouls it off. 3-2 to Werth....fouls it off. 3-2 to Werth....walk. And the bases are loaded. Hickey comes out to visit with Kazmir and Utley will be your batter.
Damn, what an at bat by Werth. (Via JFein)
Seriously. A ten pitch at-bat in this weather, and with two outs, can only cause Kazmir more control problems. Scotty Kaz is all over the place now and it's 3-1 (the one strike being a ball that Utley swung at). Ooooh....Kazmir gets a close call on the inside which Fox Trak shows was actually a strike. 3-2....Utley hits into the shift and the Rays get out of the jam.
Top of the Fifth:
Rain, Rain and more Rain. Baldelli up and the outfielder pops up behind third.....WHOA! The wind picks it up and Rollins can't get it!!! That's an error for the shortstop. Bartlett comes to the plate now with Baldelli on first and no one out.
Damn Candlestick and Wrigley winds thinks that was brutal. (Via James)
The error doesn't matter though as Utley completes a great double play by tagging Baldelli and flipping to first. Amazing concentration there. Kazmir strikes out and that's your inning. The hand doesn't seem to be bothering Hamels much.
Twelve to go. (J Craven)
Jinnnx. Jinnnnnnnnnnnnx!
Bottom of the Fifth:
"All of a sudden, a domed stadium doesn't seem like a bad idea."- Tim McCarver
Ummmm....are they normally considered bad ideas? Tim is all over the place tonight. Howard walks on four straight pitches and Buck throws to Chris Meyers for a weather report.
"I have to sit down. I'm blocking someone's view I think."- Chris Meyers
7-6 Colts at halftime. (Via SS)
Phillies Fans don't care about your dumb update, Meyers! Burrell up and he takes a strike to start off the at-bat. If I were either of these teams, I'd start trying to hit fly balls because that wind ain't slowing down. Pat B takes a sure strike that isn't called and it's 3-2....foul ball. 3-2....foul. 3-2....foul. 3-2....Low! Another walk and that'll do it for Kazmir. That was another strike that Kellogg didn't call and the Phils are in business with a new pitcher coming in.
Never understand why they don't do this. But, I'm sure there is a Fox affiliate in Philly. Why not bring on the weather man to give an update on the situation so people watching the game know what is going on. (Via Alex)
Hmmm good idea.
I'm sure Jillian would do the weather update. (Via 49er16)
And I'm sure I'd let her. Balfour is in and so is the grounds crew to work on the infield. Maddon is also out there checking on his new pitcher and we got a shot of Joe and Tim in the booth, which is complete with a giant hippie tapestry of the World Series logo. Nice touch. Victorino comes up after what seemed like a 20-minute delay and to reset....Howard on 2nd....Burrell on 1st....nobody out.
Victorino tries a drag bunt and that goes foul. Shane then pops up to Crawford....should have stayed with the bunt. Feliz up now and he proceeds to crush a pitch foul and then another straight back....0-2 and Feliz pops up on the infield to Pena who has trouble....but makes the catch. Buck and McCarver start talking about some "Fair Catch" rule and I'm pretty sure it's actually called the "Infield Fly Rule" in this Sport.
A fair catch rule in baseball? Who knew? (Via James)
2 down and Ruiz with the last chance to drive the runners in. Carlos pops it up and Balfour is pumped....2-1 still and I'm guessing we're going to get a delay any second now.
"The weather has taken the routine part of the game out of the routine". - Tim McCarver (Via J)
Top of the Sixth:
We get our first look at Ken Rosenthal tonight and the kid has an umbrella, an overcoat and gloves on while standing right outside the dugout. Grow a pair, Kenny! He's talking about CBA's and Umpire agreements so I'm tuning him out now. The Phillies are now getting the extra special treatment from the ground crew and we're still waiting for the start of the sixth.
They do realize that if they just play the game instead of having 20-minute delays every 5 minutes, they would finish the game faster. (Via JFein)
If I could redo my Venn diagram from earlier today, I would give Joe Buck his own circle off in the middle of nowhere. But I felt my eyes would explode if I had to see that I'd taken the time to write both his and McCarver's names on the blackboard. (Via Dante)
I love me some Venns! Hamels is finally ready to go with Iwamura coming up. Every other pitch is a bad one for Hamels, but he has the count to 2 and 2...and the crowd tries to come alive. STRIKE THREE! That one was outside but Hamels gets the call and Buck points out the inconsistency at the plate. Crawford grounds out to Howard and there's two down. Upton up....and he gets an infield hit as Rollins juggles the ball on what would have been a tough play.
TOUCHDOWN COLTS!! Dallas Clark, 14-6. (Via SS)
Is MLB trying to become the NHL? They are really trying to destroy baseball. I'm waiting for them to call the game because of rain so the Phillies clinch in a game that goes less than 9 innings. (Via Captain Redbeard)
There's no way that Heir Selig would let that happen. They'd HAVE to play the whole thing. McCarver is saying that the weather is "robbing" the Rays of their talent, and I'm sorry....but those are the breaks. Mother Nature is a part of Baseball and if you can't run because of a wet field, then oh well. That's why teams water down infields all the time.
Hamels is throwing over to first on every play now, four in a row actually, but it doesn't matter....Upton walks into second base. A basehit will tie it, and Hamels is still worried about Upton.
Just heard a "fuck" from a titan o-lineman after a false start. Yay for ref's open mike. (Via JFreak)
"You would need a moat to get to second." - Joe Buck
"Hydroplaning has come to baseball." - Tim McCarver
"I don't know how a crowd this soaked can make this much noise."- Joe Buck
28 years, Joe....28 years.....
Pena singles to left....Burrell with the throw....NOT IN TIME! Upton scores and we're tied at two!!!
Longoria swings through a changeup but Ruiz misses it and Pena heads to second. He's in scoring position now but Longoria flies out. Well that was a crazy inning wasn't it? Onto the Bottom of the Sixth with Hamels, Rollins and Werth coming up.
Bottom of the Sixth:
Titans just scored on a LenDale White run and got a two point conversion to tie it. Not sure why they went for it in the third, but they still got it. 14-14.....
****AND WE HAVE AN OFFICIAL RAIN DELAY****
Meyers is talking with Bob DuPuy now and it's not looking good for us to finish this thing tonight. He does however say that the game would be picked up tomorrow in the same spot because Tampa Bay tied it up in the top of the inning. If they hadn't of scored that one....this thing might be have been over. Wild.
Well I'm going to try and wait this thing out, but it's looking like a wash at this point (pun intended). I'm going to get the DuPuy video up underneath here and then see if I can't pick up on the Football game for a short, 4th quarter live-blog.
Hahaha....just caught this on CBS' Live Scoring of the game and it made me laugh....
43°F - Light rain. Mostly cloudy. Nippy. Wind: 15mph/NW

181 Comments:
@ James Craven: Not to be pessimistic but the Bucs were 0 or one in a billion all time in games played under 40 degrees, and yet they won in Philly in the NFC championship game.
Whoa, is that J-Roll in the middle? Is he really that much shorter than the other guys?
jfein, let's not play the role of Debbie Downer...
Well I guess 5'8" is pretty short. Utley is next-shortest of that bunch at 6'1"...
the rain is coming
sorry philly fans, i'm not partial to either team but i am a huge baseball fan, so tonight i root for the rays just so i can see another game of baseball on wednesday and hopefully again on thursday!
(note: i am aware that a seven game series equals two more games of mccarver, but i love baseball that much!)
Well, the night is already starting on a good note, the national anthem wasn't mangled!
Oates did a much better job with the anthem than Patti Labell.
Who knew Bill Curtis was so fast? He should be a lock for London 2012...
@ Anon: Doing a much better job than Patti LaBelle is not that much of a feat. Really.
This pregame music is definitely less than inspiring.
How many times are we going to hear the "Rocky" theme tonight? I say atleast 5 times.
McCarver just called B.J. Upton, B.J. Uption. He did correct himself, however.
Am I having a stroke, or did Tim Macarver just start speaking a completely different, hitherto unknown or unheard of language?
In case you care, I'm live blogging the Colts/Titans, and Tony K made a beard comment that confused me.
http://ssreporters.wordpress.com/2008/10/27/colts-titans-live-blog-1st-half/
@ AA: It's been 28 years since a Phillies championship, however, it's been 25 years since a Philly team won a championship (the Sixers in 83). And yes, I'm ready. This is the night. We either win tonight or the Rays win the series.
noah, do you have your ark ready? the rain is all of the Rays' fans crying for the fact that the series is going to end tonight.
Joe Buck: "[Hamels] working in a hurry."
Jim Kaat: "Think long, think wrong."
I missed it, who declared the paint dry enough to start the game?
Lesson to Carl Crawford: Never give up. He just cost his team an out.
@SSR
We don't care, for once, let us beisbol lunatics steal the thunder ;-)
Buck: "that was quick."
AA: "Duh!"
@AA
Quick side comment, please pass the word to the masses. Basketball season is starting this week. That means ESPN Digs Screamin' A out from under the rock he hid all summer. Adjust your TV volumes accordingly. Also, if Philly wins this series, expect even MORE Screamin' A.
Oh, fuck I HATE Donovan McNabb.
"The Ladies' man in left field: Pat Burrell" - Donovan McNabb
McNabb gets to contribute to a Philly championship
Wilbon's boy, Donovan F. McNabb doing the Phillies lineup...
A whole new meaning to that phrase "Oh Snap!"
Tony Kornheiser just made a really bad joke where he said "The Titans haven't been in the spotlight in a long time for something that didn't involve Elvis impersonators." Kill me now. Buck/McCarver, or Kornheiser? Choices... very bad choices.
"They had the worst record in baseball last year, we've worn out that stat" - Joe Buck
You think?
McCarver > Kornheiser.
Dear Googooly, Patrick, McGuire and Theismann > Tirico, Jaworski and Kornheiser.
"Here's Howard who has re-discovered the long ball." - Joe Buck
Not just his long ball, he re-discovered the long ball. Funny, I never knew it was lost...
Burrell's up. Inning's over.
And it looks like the Rays will get out of this inning. Pat Burrell is up and he is hitless thus far in the World Series.
WHY DOES TONY KORNHIESER NEVER TAKE A SICK DAY!?!
Damn. Burrell walks.
Yes, Yes, YES!
"In many ways, it is easier to hit a pitcher when he is wild." - Tim McCarver
That could be it for the Rays, if Hamels continues pitching the way he has been pitching.
jfein beat me to it.
please dear god let this be the last game of the season.
-dan
3-0 Titans, and
"Kerry Collins steps up in the pocket, and he can still stroke it." - Ron Jaworski
Why can't Fox find any other music besides the damn Rocky theme?
"Rocky" theme #1
At this point, "Eye of the Tiger" would be welcome relief.
Why do people try to slide head first into first base? It never works.
"I almost bought a guitar, but I realized I don't know how to play it. I was gonna serenade you guys." - Tony Kornheiser
You also don't know how to analyze, but that's never stopped you.
Then after a Pierre Garcon return:
"How can you resist saying, check please Garcon?"
"Good rip" - Joe Buck, either commenting on Navarro's swing or he did a monster fart...
@ AA: I'm pretty sure the Family Guy commercial with Stewie high on soda has been played as much as the Frank TV ads.
To make things interesting, they should have switched out McCarver and Kornheiser for these 2 games. I mean, a Kornheiser/Buck Duo??? Could it get any better? And McCarver could say the same exact things he would be saying in the baseball game and still would make just as much sense!
You gotta love the MLB Network ads ... well done.
"I think 4 o'clock would be a good time for you to stop by Taco Bell, Tim"-Buck
@mosey
I hope my provider doesn't carry it on my basic package... I would probably spend HOURS a day on the MLB channel... good god, I have no life now as it is.
"I think that 4:00 tomorrow would be a good time for you to stop by a Taco Bell." - Joe Buck admitting even he doesn't like Tim McCarver. Why else would he wish the shits on him like that?
TD Colts....Kornheiser is surprisingly quiet tonight.
@SSr
I need Reggie Wayne to outscore Adam Vinatieri by 11 tonight. keep me posted please.
"He really does himself a favor by throwing strike one." - Joe Buck
Credit where due: I think that kind of "behind the scenes" thing, having the umps mic'd and talking about the first base line is one of the better things Fox Sports does...
The other of course is scooping Chris Mortenson.
"Daniel Muir's penetration forced White to come wider than he wanted." - Mike Tirico
"Think outside the bun."-Buck
I love it when he says that line for Taco Bell.
I submit the Holidy Inn Express commercial with Cal and the fake security guard who needs to be punched in the face as the beisbol Fox Caliendo.
There's a surprise. Burrell pops out.
I do believe that Hamels was showing Victorino his "O" face.
Wow, Eva and Pena actually got a base hit. Shocking.
"I think the Titans need to win this game more because theyre a small market and if you dont they stopping about you." - Kornheiser
No Tony, if you dont win they stop about you regardless of market size, unless its the Cowgirls or the Bellicheats
Also this gem from the Buffalo-Ottawa NHL game earlier:
"he was like a baby fish trying to swim across a river of piranas" - Bill Clement after a Buffalo player tried to skate thru the entire Ottawa team.
"Scott Kazmir would like to do that first inning over again" - Tim McCarver
And on a completely unrelated note, there are two means of causing riots in Philly tonight. a). If the Phillies win and b). if they postpone this game and they have to play it over tomorrow night.
If they stop this game because of the rain. Do you think Buck finally goes crazy?
Hamels hit in the pitching hand...
Philly collapse in... 3....2.......1....
How is getting hit in the hand with gloves on makes it better Tim?
Damn, what an at bat by Werth.
Put the Saved by Zero ad right up there with Frank TV, Family Guy, and Holiday Inn.
Most. Annoying. Commercioal. Ever.
Rob in WI, Wayne hasn't sniffed the end zone. Still 7-6 Colts.
jfein, every commercial is annoying, especially when three car commercials in a row play...four pisses me off even worse.
Damn Candlestick and Wrigley winds thinks that was brutal.
Wow! What a double play!
Twelve to go.
Even Ed Hochuli can see that Utley made the tag.
49er16, would that Candelstick wind be known as General Westerly as Bill Conlin once dubbed it?
@AA: Jinx this!
Ah, quit your whining Joseph. You cover football games, you should be used to this kind of stuff.
And did Tim McCarver just say that a domed stadium sounds good about now?
And suddenly a domed stadium doesn't seem so bad --Tim McCarver. There it is the comment about the Trop even though the game is in Philly
"I think this pillow fight of a 2 minute drill here will come to an end." - Mike Tirico
7-6 Colts at halftime.
What would Buck sound like, if he was hammered drunk right now?
For some reason, with the Titans on their own 5 and about 1 minute left, whether the Colts got the ball back before halftime was very amusing to Tirico, Jaws and TK.
We sure don't want to be the only team ever to win a clinching game cut short due to rain.
Never understand why they don't do this. But, I'm sure there is a Fox affiliate in Philly. Why not bring on the weather man to give an update on the situation so people watching the game know what is going on.
What would Chub Feeney do?
I'm sure Jillian would do the weather update.
alex, we have a Fox O&O here in Philly. Hell, Jillian Reynolds would be good at this point.
Wow. Burrell is having a good at bat. I'm shocked. Really.
jamescraven, thanks for letting me know. But, with "Dopper 12 million" or "storm watch team 2008" you think they could get the guy to stand in front of a green screen and let the poeple watching know if the rain will let up/continue/get worse
Fork...stuck.
Stamps...on the envelope.
Mail it in...yeah, it's about time.
@AA
I hate, hate, HATE Domed stadiums... I know Heir Bud adores them, and wishes every team had one, but the damn elements are part of the game, man up and bear with it.
You know Buck is grinding his teeth, while saying "I guess we are in a delay."
Jungle Love during the pitching change. Gotta be the craziest song ever next to The Bird by Morris Day and The Time.
Hey, rob in wi, isn't there a retractable roof in Milwaukee?
Cynicism at its' worst.
Was Joe Buck actually sitting up straight?
"The weather has taken the routine part of the game out of the routine". - Tim McCarver
@jamescraven
For the record(s)
Me: Cubs fan.
Me: HATE Miller Park. A horrible, horrible stadium. And "retractable" roof really doesn't count if you can't open or close the roof because you'll wake the neighbors 5 states over.
Oy... but Selig got his wish, conned some state senators to vote for his precious ballpark.
I hate Selig more and more every day.
A fair catch rule in baseball? Who knew?
"The longer they let the Colts stay in the game, the better chance of Manning beating you. They havent seen a passing attack like the Colts." - Kornheiser
DUH !
"[Pena]'s two for two, on catching pop-ups" - Joe Buck
rob at wi, you mean "Interim Commissioner for life This Bud's Not For You Selig?"
If I could redo my Venn diagram from earlier today, I would give Joe Buck his own circle off in the middle of nowhere. But I felt my eyes would explode if I had to see that I'd taken the time to write both his and McCarver's names on the blackboard.
And thanks, AA, for the link today. Truly appreciated.
@jamescraven
Yeah... I sum that title up as Heir Bud...
god I hate that man. However, he is semi-responsible for reaffirming my belief in politics (not to bring THAT topic up today), but the senator who changed his vote to approve the stadium was recalled, booted out of office, and basically became an ambulance chaser. I was amused.
They do realize that if they just play the game instead of having 20-minute delays every 5 minutes, they would finish the game faster.
TOUCHDOWN COLTS!! Dallas Clark, 14-6.
Jaws is so awesome..he predicted the play before it happened, this is like the 10th time he's done that
Is MLB trying to become the NHL? They are really trying to destroy baseball. I'm waiting for them to call the game because of rain so the Phillies clinch in a game that goes less than 9 innings.
Manning to Clark for TD. 14-6 Colts 11 min left in 3rd
@jfein
BP's roundtable summed it up best. The Umps are basically NOT delaying the game for an hour, but adding 5-10 minutes each half inning to get the field as ready as possible.
I'm ok with this, if only that A) I don't want Buck and McCarver to have to fill for an hour and B) I don't want any of that useless fucking Fox Time Filler Programming.
Gotta love Buck for mentioning the Philadelphia police. Reminding the nation, what we already know about Philly.
As we all know, it's not raining at the airport in Philly.
Nice shot of a 3 inch puddle around 2nd base.
Why would Joe Maddon want to talk to the umps about calling the game? Wouldn't that be handing the Phils the World Series?
McCarver: "Hydroplaning has been introduced to baseball."
Red flag at NASCAR much?
Just heard a "fuck" from a titan o-lineman after a false start.
yay for ref's open mike.
"You would need a moat to get to second." - JOe Buck
"Hydroplaning has come to baseball." - Tim McCarver
And to those saying that the conditions rob the Rays of their talent, the Phils are a running team as well.
I was just about to make the same hydroplaning comment that Timmeh did... does that make me BAD? Or Timmeh a genius?
You decide!
I think they passed out happy pills at the MNF production meeting. Jaws and Kornheiser cant finish two sentences in a row without laughing.
Credit to both Buck & McCarver - they are FINALLY getting critical - the field is a joke...and MLB (as always under Bud) has COMPLETELY MESSED THIS UP.
@Jfein
There is NO way that this game ends before nine innings. If they go to a delay, they'll wait it out.
"I don't know how a crowd this soaked can make this much noise." - Joe Buck
Oh, I don't know, maybe it has something to do with the possibility of clinching a World Series tonight.
And now they pull the tarp out since the game is tied....
Again, I ask What would Chub Feeney do?
Wow... Pena delivers big time...
Upton finally hustles on the bases.
@ Rob in WI: The weather is only going to get worse from here on out. This ain't letting up anytime soon.
he is loving the hydroplane
AWESOME
I honestly would have thought they'd have Philly play out their atbats.
Okay, we're in a rain delay, so by rule, it is a suspended game if the rain continues.
So if they pull the tarp out with the score tied at 2 after 6 full...and it rains forever...the two options are resume the game in 7th tomorrow night for 3 innings of elimination ball or wait until 2a?
I live on the west coast and my kids are already about to go to bed. I imagine we can tuck MLB to bed in a few years too...how sad. How truly sad.
"The Titans arent built like a team for the 2000s. Theyre like a 1950s team" - Kornheiser
No Tony, they're probably modeled on the mid-80s Bears since that was the teams their head coach played on.
Perfect. Maybe they talked to the NFL and decided lets make sure sports fans that can only afford one HDTV can watch the finish of both games without using a remote control. This could turn into a late but great Monday night.
Love me some fun Monday night sports action.
And Tirico just welcomed baseball fans to the telecast. Awesome Mike.
"This would be a suspended game to resume later"
Chris Myers: "So, if we can't play tonight, do we start from scratch?"
"No, it's a suspended game".
God I hate that guy...
Baseball players are such sissies. Play the damn game!
Joe Buck explaining the new suspended game rule VERY well... I knew that MLB had changed it, but I didn't realize it had to be a tie game (and my google search had been half hearted).
Why can't we have THAT Joe Buck more than 1% of a game?
Wow. All I can say is wow.
Word of the day = hydroplaning
Well, every weatherman and woman in Philadelphia blew this one!
Everyone said light rain through midnight, but alas the precipitation is only intensifying.
The Phillies Radio Network has their local meteorologist Kathy Orr on and she's saying the rain could lighten up in a couple of hours, but odds are it's the I-95 corridor getting socked and that things aren't going to get any better 'til Wednesday. Take it at face value.
Suspended game! Glad the weather didn't decide this game played in hockey weather.... Will probably be resumed on Wednesday, is my guess.
WTF... I just turned on the football game, and even I realized that going for it on 4th and an inch was bad move by Indy...
Lindsay Soto is making the rounds of the low exposure sports networks, being on NFLN for Total Access and was the sideline reporter for the hockey game on VS.
I'm getting "King of the Hill" reruns out here in Sacramento. What about you guys?
Two unofficial polls at the bar in Philly.
Yes, God hates Philly
Yes, we riot win or lose.
No truth to the rumour that Bud Selig is planning to move the game to Miller Park.
They really would've called the game if it was still 2-1? It almost seems as though Playoff games should NOT be decided that way.
Crap, now we are getting "Everybody Love Raymond" reruns. I hope the rain lets up soon.
Fox paid god to make it rain like this and extend the series back to Tampa for more raitings.
49er
the FOX station in Philly went to news, and their annoying pompous weather guy said conditions probably wouldnt improve until Wednesday
Well on to football.
"If you cant beat them, hire them." - Kornheiser on two former Colts playing for Titans
We got local news here in VA, I think something shitty is about to start though.
Too bad I chose beisbol to be my favorite sport... this looks like it might have been a sweet little game. Plus, I think Fisher's a hell of a coach.
jg, I'm surprised said weather guy, John Bolaris hasn't called for everyone to grab 2 of everything a la Noah's Ark. Keep in mind this is a guy who was sent packing for calling the botched "Storm of the Century" blizzard that wasn't 5 or 6 years ago.
I'm sorry but for all the Philly fans(not all Philly fans, just the ones who act like assholes and throw stuff at other fans/players in the stadium), I'm laughing a little right now cause now they are probably angry that the game got suspended and start their conspiracy theories about the weather. I do feel bad for Hamels and the Phillies though since it looks like the game won't end tonight and have to continue tomorrow or Wednesday
It looks like we may not be able to resume this game until Thursday. The weather tomorrow in Philly is supposed to be worse, colder and heavier rain. And while it may let up in the evening, the wind gusts are supposed to be up to 50 mph and the wind chill could be in the 20s.
@49er16: Local news as well, as Fox 2 in Detroit is detailing how former Mayor Kilpatrick is gonna spend his time in jail.
Too bad I chose beisbol to be my favorite sport
Same boat. Curse Old Style beer & Ernie Harwell!
/not really
Oops, I meant Wednesday. My bad.
So the question becomes how long before Bud Selig mandates that all stadiums have retractable roofs?
Oh GOD. Steelers-Redskins IN the Nation's Capital next Monday in the Presidential Bellweather game.
TK is going to be UN. FREAKING. BEARABLE.
And I couldn't be more excited.
@RJBO
Budweiser and Harry Caray. I hear yeah.
Good lord, Tennessee's uniforms are just atrocious.
@jim williams
I usually mute it or change station when Bolaris comes on, cant stand him. Shame really, FOX affiliate in Philly has some rather attractive female reporters.
Has anyone gotten any updates from Buck in Philadelphia yet? I've been stuck with Seinfeld.
Tirico tells us the game officially suspended until tomorrow night.
If I fucking miss House because of this, i'm going to be righteously pissed off.
According to Tirico on the NFL game, the baseball game officially suspended for tomorrow.
Oh Well, at least Raw comes on in 45 minutes.
@ Rob in WI: At what times is Dr. Kornheiser NOT "UN. FREAKING. BEARABLE"?
Now that Seinfeld is over, could we please hear the official call that will no doubt be the announcement that game 5 will be finished on Wednesday night?
@jfein
I'm not a big Kornheiser hater... kinda got used to reading him and listening to him and can generally put up with his nonsense. Anything that slowly pushes away memories of Frank Gifford and Dan Dierdorf is fine by me.
There ain't no way they are playing baseball tomorrow. Well, let me put it this way, I'd be shocked if they did.
Yay, now it's the King of Queens!
ESPN is reporting game is suspended played tomorrow, FOX Philly is saying no word on when game will resume.
@rob 11:09
The train wreck possibilities for next week are just mind-boggling. Plus, I'm sure Tirico will have some social commentary ready
FOX Philly just showed scoreboard message earliest resumption 8 pm tomorrow. Press onference w/ Selig and umps starting.
A Bud Selig Presser?... i SO wish I had ESPNEWS right now.
24-14 Titans and Manning just threw a pick to Chirs Hope who took it inside the red zone.
I turned on Fox just in time to hear the official word that the game has been postponed until tomorrow (which may have to be re-postponed until Wednesday). Coverage, as always, is going to start at 8.
31-14 Titans. I missed how they scored.
"We talk about how it's a football town, it's a small town." - Dr. Kornheiser
"Its not New York, not Chicago, its a small town." - Kornheiser on Nashville.
OK Tony we get it. Nashville is not a large city. Second time tonight he's gone off on that point.
Peyton Manning with scores a TD on a QB sneak with less than two minutes remaining?
31-21 Titans.
"The colts are hitting foul balls and they are just missing the foul poll." - Mike Tirico making little sense.
Titans recovered the onside kick. And this one is over.
After watching Selig's press conference, what the hell were Fox's reporters doing during the game? Shouldn't they have interviewed him during the game so he could have told us that the game will go 9 innings and not be a shortened game?
Just did a check with AccuWeather.com, now they say it will stop raining around noon, but it will be colder though.
@ James Craven: The latest forecast I saw from weather.com has the steady rain stopping at around mid-afternoon. Not only will it be colder, but it will also be windier. The question will ultimately be does the commish want the game to be played in freezing temps with huge wind gusts?
Stat of the night: The rays are 0-6 when the temprature is below 50 degrees. As posted on FOX, the game time temprature is 44 degrees.
