ESPN Finally Gets A Hold Of Someone From The Boston Herald

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

It's been almost a week since I posted that ESPN was all over the Boston Herald after the news came out the Pats didn't tape the Rams walk-through, and the Herald has yet to address the validity of the story. After Goodell held a press conference this afternoon (which solved nothing), NFL Live had BH Columnist Mike Felger on to discuss the story and tapes and he of course diverted all questions regarding it.

Good times! If I was Trey Wingo, I would have hung up on him (I think he was close) because that guy provided absolutely nothing. It appears that the Herald is just hoping this will go away, and it probably will, but seriously it's not that hard to say you're sticking by the story or you're retracting it.

I thought ESPN was going after them unfairly last Thursday (some of the reports did), but after that showing I'm on ESPN's side (for once) and I want answers too. Also, to say you don't represent your employer is pretty ridiculous if you ask me. Especially to someone who works for ESPN, the Leader in employees representing their company.

ESPN Is All Over The Boston Herald Today (Awful Announcing)

Is anyone else confused more now than ever before?

Felger does the ESPN drive time show in Boston, so it was logical for Bristol to question him on this story, but can he really say? He didn't write the article nor did he approve it being printed. He said he would comment on it during today's show..Don't know if it would be different than what he said on SC.

trey did start off the interview as if felger had written the article. can't blame felger if he felt like he was attacked right off the bat for something he didn't have any part of.

I don't know about that Anon. Trey did call him a representative to start and clarified his position right away. It seems like Felger was prepped just a bit beforehand.

From a legal perspective, I disagree, AA. Legally, a person (in this case, Felger) would only represent his employer if he is working within the scope of his job description. So, if Felger wrote a column in tomorrow's Herald, yes, he would be representing the paper. But, if goes outside the scope of his employment, like going on ESPN or even on his own radio show on ESPN 890 Boston, then he is definitely NOT an agent of the the Herald. I'm not a lawyer, but I have studied the law...perhaps there's a lawyer out there who can clarify this more. Bottom line, given potential libel suits, I think Felger was wise not to comment.

The Herald has been very protective of the story and I guess they want no commenting from anybody including the writer John Tomase. Wingo was wrong with saying Felger is a representative but Felger can be a jackass and his response showed that. I wonder what Jessame (sic?) Tang who owns 890 will say because of how Felger treated the mothership.

P.S. I actually enjoy Felger. He is great on Comcast New England and the radio. He will not throw softball questions which is why he maybe having a hard time getting guest. He has been having a long running fued with Richard Seymour of the Patriots.

Will this story and all related please just go away. There is NOTHING interesting about it at all, I don't care how many articles that Peter King writes.

Don't judge the Herald on Michael Felger. That guy is a huge douche.

I agree on the whole him not commenting thing but the level of defensiveness was a bit over the top. I guess the representative thing, while not fair, happens whether you like it or not. I think Stephen summed it up perfectly.

I like how he claims he "knows" other teams have taped the Patriots. Typical Boston douchebag.

Felger is barley a columnist any more anyways, writes twice a week for the herald during football season, thats it, far to busy with a drive time radio show and nightly tv show, how the hell is he supposed to speak for the herald? as any boston resident can tell you, felger is a guy full of opinions (often ones that people hate), this is not fair critism. if you heard his show today, he had plenty to say about the issue, but not about the herald, a paper he has not written for since the super bowl

Those of us who live in New England already know that Felger's a douchebag. Nothing new here.

Also, anon @6:19 - other teams have admitted to taping, you typical Boston-hating bigoted douchebag.

The Heraldmust have Tomase in hiding. I figuretheyneed o make some sort of statement in tomorrow's edition.

They need to say that:

a. they ran with a highly circulated rumor or

b. Tomase was told by Walsh that this was indeed fact or

c. Tomase has some other source, that no one including Matt Walsh or the NFL knows about or

d. That Tomase was duped by someone claiming to be a Patriots employee at the time of SB XXXVI.

The newspapers reputation, what there is of one, rests on how they handle this come tomorrow morning.

Tomase was at the press conference in New York

AA, there is a difference between representing your company and being authorized to speak on their behalf.

Wingo was essentially asking him to speak on behalf of the paper -- basically the role of an editor, publisher or hired spokesperson.

ESPN should have known what they were getting when they asked Felger on. They shouldn't act surprised. Having worked on the PR side of things (and actually for a company that represented the Herald), most reporters will ask for "someone authorized to speak on behalf." Unless the Herald represented Felger in that way, ESPN has no reason to be upset that they didn't get an apology or Felger to address the article specifically.
