Erik Kuselias Is Burning

Saturday, May 24, 2008

I had no idea that Rome Is Burning was live (or perhaps taped live), and apparently Erik Kuselias didn't either. Kuselias was filling in for Rome on Friday and botched an intro for an interview with Jeremy Roenick. So how did they fix it after the mistake aired? ESPN just re-ran the commercials that just aired and did it over....

I love the look on Kuselias' face and the fact that they cut the mic off. Live television is never easy people. Especially when you don't know it's live.

Stick to radio, Kuselias. He was in all week as a forum guest. He should've known the show's live.

This was not live. It's shot live to tape. Meaning, it is pre-recorded. Each segment is delivered unedited to ESPN's format guidelines.

Having used to work there, here is my guess as to what happened:

The wrong information was given to the ESPN department that controls these live to tape shows. That information usually states that Segment X runs from a specific beginning timecode (usually time of day) to a specific ending timecode. If there is an instance when a segment needed to be re-done, it is noted on the log that is delivered to ESPN and the department that deals with this show.

My guess is that whatever person was responsible for supplying ESPN with the ins and outs of each segment accidentally gave them the wrong timecodes for that particular segment. Instead of giving them the in and out timecodes for the re-do of that segment, they gave ESPN the timecodes of the bad take of that segment.

Therefore, what happened is that you see the host start the segment and stop it so he can do it over. So when they saw the segment abruptly end, ESPN did not know what to do...and therefore went to commercials to fill the time.

If you ever watch the west coast SportsCenters that re-run in the morning, you will see that segments that were messed up live re-air corrected. This is because they re-shoot the bad segments after the live show airs and supply the correct timecodes for the new and improved segments to whomever gets them.

If it wasn't live, then why didn't anyone on-staf flet him know before he did his Final Take ripping Indianapolis for getting the 2011 Super Bowl that we actually got it for 2012 ?!

No-talent asshat.

That might be my favorite soundbite from the show:

Until you can step and bring home some hardware, you earn the right to talk the smack. Not just 'cause you're from Cleveland?!?!

I've been to wrestling TV tapings where some matches were re-wrestled again when a cameraman would miss a big shot, or shot something that shouldn't have been.

This is not the first time this has happened on JRIB. In one episode during Super Bowl week in Miami, Rome completely screwed up the opening "burns" segment, with the videos airing out of sync, and Rome stopping and restarting his thoughts. He managed to get out a "live TV" comment, to at least acknowledge his mistakes. So I've always assumed the show was live.

Kuselias bores me to tears. Stick to NASCAR.

Can he please be rightfully given a permanent radio show instead of that hideous Orestes Destrade and John Seibol production that concentrates on online polling by the 45 people who listen to it.

You guys are idiots. The show is live, but some segments are pre-taped. The tape operator played back the wrong tape. It wasn't Erik's fault at all. I know this because I work on the show.

As for the one guy complaining about him calling it the 2011 Super Bowl in Indy. It will technically be played in the year 2012, but Super Bowl's are always referred to by the season that they precede. Look it up. Thus, Erik was correct in calling it the 2011 Super Bowl.

As for whoever's blog this is, you've really got to get your facts straight before you post stuff like this. It's irresponsible and the exact reason people like Bob Costas and Jim Nantz hate bloggers.
