Michele Tafoya Is Just A Bit Hypocritical
Thursday, May 01, 2008
Lost in all of the Bissinger talk yesterday was this story via MDS at Fanhouse. Apparently Mike Tirico and Michele Tafoya were talking about Deadspin and the like yesterday when Tafoya decided to go to the site for presumably the first time on-air. Here was her initial reaction....
"While you were talking I went to Deadspin, just to take a glance, because I don't frequent that site by any stretch of the imagination. I see very quickly why it is popular with a certain audience, and it disgusts me. And that's all I'm going to say."I'm guessing that she saw the post about SexySoxGirls.com or Ronadldo's Tranny Prostitutes, but I could be wrong. I wouldn't call either of those stories disgusting, but I could see why a woman might not like those posts. Well, almost immediately following that segment Tafoya had a discussion with a producer about of all things....guys at urinals....
Phil: It's the same thing with urinals in the men's room.So pictures of a few attractive chicks or a story about Ronaldo hiring legal prostitutes is disgusting, but urinal talk and guy's stances aren't? Glad we could clear that up. I understand that there is a lot of misogyny in the Blogosphere, but that's just a tad bit hypocritical. Especially when the Red Sox girls submit the pictures themselves to that website.
Tafoya: It is?
Phil: The same thing.
Tafoya: So it should be every other one. But has that happened to you, Phil?
Phil: Absolutely. There's a row of urinals, about 10 of them, you go to one on the end, you go to number two, the guy goes right next to you, to number three, while four through 10 are open.
Tafoya: Is he trying to pick up on you maybe?
Phil: No.
Tafoya: What's the stance of his feet?
Michelle Tafoya on Deadspin: 'It Disgusts Me' (But Talking About Men at Urinals Doesn't) (Fanhouse)

i heard this exchange yesterday (both tirico and patrick recapped the whole costas debacle quite a bit). i'm not a fan of tafoya, but if i had to guess i think she meant more the commentators than the actual blog posts. even as a guy, there are times when i think the comments go a bit too far (see anonymous 930a).

Yeah I hear you Dan.
Hey, she just has a wide stance.
I'm with Michelle. I think that the world would be a much better place if everyone knew the rules regarding Urinal Etiquette.
Gotta cut her some slack, she just wants to be one of the guys. Therefore, she'll be crushing beer cans on her head in no time.
She tried to be one of the guys when she poured beer on those Michigan fans at the Metrodome.
Who stood next to Phil? Larry Craig?
As the saying goes, "you don't always need to work blue to get a laugh."
As a female, I've just got to say, the only ones of us who do find Deadspin 'disgusting', as Tafoya put it, are the ones without any semblance of a sense of humor.
I heard the exchange, too, and of course, Vanilla Ice Tirico agreed with her. Putz...
Damn, I used to like her too. Oh well, one less chick to give me and my fellow females a bad name ...
I have to admit, I kinda wish Deadspin wasn't the standard for all sites. It's much more of a sports gossip site than sports analysis. SBNation is probably a better representative of what bloggers are capable of.
True story: I have an old friend who did some work for CBS during the Nagano Olympics for Tafoya's late-night roundup show. The crew had a cute little nickname for her: Cunt.
Great point AA. It is as if people have this view they can say whatever they want, but if it's in print, "HOW DARE YOU DO THAT".
Another example of hypocrisy: Stephen A Smith. He would be the first to point out racial inequalities and yet talk about women as if there only contribution to society is to be sexual objects for men.
