Trent Green Takes Over MMQB, For Vacationing Peter King

Monday, June 29, 2009

Trent Green recently retired, and while he seems to still seems to be getting used to life without Football, the former NFL qb might have found a new career. Green is filling in for the vacationing Peter King, and decided to write about Mike Vick, the NFL schedule, Brett Favre....and of course....the "10 things he thinks he thinks". Here are some highlights....

2) I think I'm going crazy because I feel like we've been talking about Brett Favre and his retirement since the new millennium. You want to play, Brett? I hope you do. I've always enjoyed watching you play. But please decide by the start of training camp.

6) I think, actually I know, that Mark Brunell is the last quarterback standing from the 1993 draft class. He's outlasted Drew Bledsoe (No. 1 overall), Rick Mirer (No. 2), Billy Joe Hobert (No. 58), Gino Toretta (No. 192), Alex Van Pelt (No. 216), Elvis Grbac (No. 219) and me (No. 222). Keep going, Mark! I'll be pulling for you.

8) I think that brings me to ticket prices. Where are the family seats at most stadiums now? Teams need to realize they are pricing out a huge part of their fan base. DirecTV is great and watching games in high definition is amazing. But absolutely nothing can beat watching a game live. The atmosphere, the grill smells, the people all dressed in team apparel, the elements, the live sound of a good tackle, 80,000 people all cheering at the same time -- you can't replicate the experience. I'd like to see all owners set aside a few sections for reasonably-priced seating so parents can afford to take their kids.

10) I think I hope Peter King has a great vacation. Thank you for allowing me this opportunity.
Okay that last one was a bit cheesy, but I think Trent Green may have a future in the writing business. Apparently those concussions haven't had THAT much of a lasting affect on him. In fact, Peter King may have just been Wally Pipp'd! Oh and who knew Mark Brunell was still in the League? That my friends is insight!!!

Billick, Millen And (Gulp!) Theismann In The Running To Replace Collinsworth At NFL-N

Tuesday, June 02, 2009

Well at least that's what Peter King is trying to tell people. is reporting that newly signed ESPN analyst, Matt Millen, is the leader in the clubhouse to replace Cris Collinsworth, but the network is also considering Brian Billick, Marshall Faulk and the one and only....Joe Theismann!!!

Remember I told you a couple of weeks ago how NFL Network was furious with Jon Gruden for agreeing to a deal to do color on the Thursday night games in a two-man booth, then reneging to sign with ESPN? NFL Network wasn't exactly thrilled with the worldwide leader for ripping off Gruden. Well, ESPN and NFL Network may just have to play nice now to get another deal done -- if league TV decides to make Millen the color man to replace Gruden for its eight-game slate of late-season games.

In the wake of NFL Network losing Gruden, the channel has considered a few options of analysts to pair with Bob Papa. One is Brian Billick, the quick-on-his-feet former Ravens coach who had a successful debut on Fox last season. Another would be a three-man booth, with Papa, Marshall Faulk and Joe Theismann, who, presumably, would walk to each game if the network would give him the gig. But I hear Millen is the leader in the NFL Network clubhouse.
Bob Papa and Matt Millen would actually make a heck of a team, but to do so, Millen would have to work approximately 90 hours a week. He'd potentially be in studio for Monday Night Football, have NFL Live during the week, Thursday Night Football and finally College Football work for ESPN on the weekend. Even the most dedicated of broadcasters can't talk that much without losing their voice.

While I think Joe Theismann would be a bad choice, I almost miss him at this point. A three-man booth of Papa, Theismann and Marshall Faulk, would be dreadful....it would certainly provide tons of posts for the site. Hmmm....someone flip a coin for me.

Sign Of The Apocalypse: Peter King Is Twittering

Monday, April 20, 2009

If there was one thing that I never thought see, was the day that Peter King opened a Twitter account. KSK found the SI writer's page the other day, and there are so many good entries, that it's almost impossible to link to just one. Here are my top three....

3. "Good morning all. This is my first Tweet of all time. Noticed in the NY Times that Oprah beat me by one day. I'm bitter."

2. "Just talked with Mark Sanchez. Dedicated lad. Worked out at his old high school tonight. Will go to class all week at USC. More in MMQB."

1. "Have a good day. Off to run some errands. Hey, thanks to Karen Dmochowsky and Sam Farmer for making Twitter sound not so intimidating."
As KSK points out, it didn't take just one person to help open a Twitter account for Mr. King, but it took two. I also like the use of the word "lad" in reference to Mark Sanchez. Twitter has taught me that Peter King talks like he's stuck in nineteen dickety two (King had to say dickety because the Kaiser had stolen our word for "twenty.")

Peter King Is Not A Fan Of You "New York Times People"

Monday, April 13, 2009

Peter King usually uses the last page of his Monday Morning Quarterback column for a collection of random thoughts, and in his last "thing he thinks he thinks", he decided to take a shot at the New York Times. The Times, who acquired the Globe recently, announced that the Boston paper is dangerously close to being shut down, much to the dismay of the state of Massachusetts and King....

You cannot be serious about shuttering the Boston Globe, you New York Times people. That's unjust and ridiculous and will be a black mark against anything you do journalistically in the long-term. How do you walk into the flagship journalistic institution in a six-state region and say, "Unless everyone in the building takes a monstrous pay cut, and a few of you walk away from your jobs forever, we're closing the place?'' What kind of management style is that?
I think everyone is in agreement that it would be a shame to lose an institution like the Boston Globe, and it's certainly good to have someone as widely read as King, to have in your corner.

SI's Dr. Z Recovering After Multiple Strokes

Tuesday, December 02, 2008

I'm still playing a bit of catch-up after talking about a half of a week off for the holiday, but wanted to make a spot to send best wishes and speedy recovery to Sports Illustrated's Paul Zimmerman. Dr. Z, as he's known within the magazine, suffered back-to-back strokes late in November, but according to Peter King, the longtime SI scribe is slowly but surely own his way to recovery. Via SI's Monday Morning Quarterback....

It is Saturday morning. The best football writer of our time is sitting in a chair in room 106 of St. Clare's Hospital, looking very much like Paul Zimmerman. In fact, a little better. He's lost some weight, maybe 15 pounds, and he has the beginnings of a Hemingway beard of gray stubble. For a man who had two strokes a week ago -- one on Saturday, the next on Sunday -- his gestures and facial expressions when I speak to him are precisely the same as the last time I saw him. Dr. Z is still most definitely all there. It's the cogent speech, for now, that's not. Temporarily. But that's not going to stop him from trying.

"He still talks all day,'' says his smiling and wonderfully devoted wife, Linda, a.k.a. The Flaming Redhead from all those Zim columns on SI.com.

I write today to tell so many of his friends and acquaintances in the league and in his reading public about him. I wasn't sure how. I thought it might be good to just tell you about him and how he's doing because I know you'd want to know. And then, because so many people who read Web sites are young, I wanted to give those readers a chance to find out what all the fuss is about. Why, you might ask, with so many interesting things happening in the football world -- the idiotic Plaxico Burress tragicomedy, teams going into the playoff home stretch, the Packers and Chargers and Saints falling out of the race with bad losses -- would I lead the column thusly? It's because you need to either learn about how well Zim captures the essence of this great game, or you need to be reminded of his brilliance because you haven't seen the breadth of it in a while.
I've mentioned on these pages before that I look forward to the good Doctor's Media Rankings every year, and while his game picking skills are still questionable, I hope to read one of those articles again in the near future. All the best, Doc Z.

If you get a chance, make sure to read the rest of that Peter King entry on Zimmerman, which is linked below.

Deanna Favre Defends Husband On Family Blog

Monday, October 27, 2008

I had no idea that the Favre Family knew what a blog was, let alone that they had one on Blogger (using the most basic template possible), but alas there it is....The Family of Favre. It's a good enough website on the family with pictures, stories and links to charities. Nothing out of the ordinary really. Well outside of the latest post titled "Family".

I almost skipped past it because of the title, but the post is actually Deanna Favre's first blog entry. One that actually serves as a defense of her husband against the "continual attacks" from the media....

But, over the past weeks, we have been deeply affected by the various media reports and accusations that have unfairly questioned Brett’s loyalty, fairness and character... Our children, family and friends have been so supportive and steadfast during these times. Brett and I have two wonderful girls, who, daily, show us unconditional love and remind us that everything will be okay. And, they remind us that media reports, accusations and rumors become irrelevant in light of the joy they bring to our family and in how they remind us that, in all things—even the tough things--- God has a bigger, better purpose.

But, I will say, most hurtful are those media reports who would like you to believe that Brett is eaten up with bitterness over his split with the Packers. Still feeling some grief, sure… but not bitterness. Yes, in the beginning, Brett was angry and hurt with the way things ended, but how could he not be? Brett gave most of his career (and his adult life) to the Packers. They were more than just an organization but also became our home away from home and our surrogate family. We will always love the Packer fans for making Brett more than just the focus of their applause on game day, but as part of their families, too. Again, how could any of us not be hurt and brokenhearted about such a loss of connection? Thus, certainly, Brett does not, in any way, hold a vendetta against his former team. But that has not stopped some from scrutinizing his every move and blaming him for so many things that simply are not true. Some incidents, like the locker room pranks appear funny (but they are still untrue)… Others, like the questionable phone calls to other teams, are hurtful, distasteful, and… still untrue as they have been reported.
Because of this, lately, my heart has been so heavy.
She's kind of all over the place (not unlike myself), but you get the general idea. Let me first say that I'm sure Deanna Favre is an amazing person. She survived Cancer, wrote a book AND helped her husband beat addiction (she was also the only guest on MNF that was even remotely interesting). She is certainly a better person than I.

With that said, while it's great that they are sharing their lives with their fans, it was an extremely sketchy decision to post this. I mean Brett was caught in an all out lie whether he was helping the Lions or not. He went running to Peter King and Chris Mortensen to deny the whole thing, before finally admitting to the Millen conversation in a press conference. I know athletes play the media, and vice versa, but to come out and try and defend something in this fashion just reeks of a PR stunt. Not saying that it is, but it's just odd.

It'll be interesting to see if anything is added to the site in the coming weeks. I'm guessing it will go dormant for awhile.

Peter King And Tom Brady: A Timeline

Wednesday, September 17, 2008

Okay, I'll admit it....I'm fascinated by Peter King. No, not because I think his writing is amazing, or that he has virtually the whole NFL in his cell phone. None of that. It's really the fact that he just doesn't care. He'll write an article that contradicts something he wrote a day ago and isn't even fazed. He's like Derek Jeter in that Gatorade commercial, "but for me the next article begins when the last one ends."

Well that brings us to some stellar research that reader PW put in regarding the relationship between Peter King and Tom Brady. In PK's latest article, he posted the following email exchange about Brady and Matt Cassel....

From Brian Maxwell, of Minneapolis: "I know it's early but if the Pats win the Super Bowl this year with Matt Cassel, does it reflect negatively on Tom Brady's legacy? I think if that happens, we can stop the "greatest of all-time" talk.''

PK: Not sure I've heard anyone call Brady the greatest of all-time. But you're right. Cassel has made one start. Brady has made 128, has won 79 percent of them, is 14-3 in the postseason, is 3-1 in Super Bowls. I understand your point -- that if the Patriots go far into January, then it takes some of the shine off Brady's star. But we're not even far into September.
Now it struck both PW and I, very odd that Peter King would say that he has , "never heard someone call Brady the greatest of all-time," when King himself has probably written those exact words about a million times in Brady's career. Let's take a look shall we....
October 5, 2004
Patriots QB Tom Brady is as cool as a man can be when the rush is on (Sports Illustrated)

"Playing like this is the biggest reason why the Patriots are poised to set the all-time record for consecutive wins Sunday against Miami. Tom Brady is simply an unflappable player, one of the greatest pressure players I've ever seen."

December 19, 2005
Brady, Pats are back; Bolts end Colts' perfection bid (Sports Illustrated)

"I was in the Brady-for-Sportsman crowd, probably as a leader of the pack. This morning, I'm not here to say he's better than Peyton Manning, worse than Peyton Manning, the same as Peyton Manning, because, let's face it, they're both all-timers."

October 23, 2007
Pats-Colts, Brady-Manning ... let the arguments begin (Sports Illustrated)

"Tony Kornheiser asked Ron Jaworski Monday night on ESPN who he thought is better right now -- Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. Jaworski looked like he'd rather answer this question: "Which of your daughters is your favorite?'' The answer is simple. We're living in an era with three of the best 10 quarterbacks (Manning, Brady, Brett Favre) ever to play. We'll have years to debate what order you'd put them in, and more great ones will be added as time passes."

November. 6th 2007
Personnel chiefs Scott Pioli and Bill Polian are behind the success in New England and Indy (Sports Illustrated)

"Tom Brady and Peyton Manning are already among the alltime greats."

January 14, 2008
Observations from a nearly perfect NFL weekend (Sports Illustrated)

"Tom Brady was a ref's buried whistle and a stunning drop by Mr. Hands Wes Welker from being 28-for-28 the other night. Are we watching the best quarterback of all time in mid-career? Are we watching, maybe three of the best five or six of all time?"
And all of that research was done in the matter of about 10 minutes using Google. I can understand forgetting certain stances or predictions that you've written in over twenty years of Football reporting, but come on! He's devoted entire articles to that same "All-time Greatest" debate about twenty times since Brady's been in the league. The guy is either like Guy Pearce in "Memento" and he's working backwards and sideways, or he's just messing with everybody. Either way, he continues to blow my mind.

Warren Sapp Hypes Showtime's "Inside The NFL", Peter King Gets Mad

Monday, September 01, 2008

Warren Sapp is one of the four parties involved in the new version of Inside The NFL that just moved from HBO to Showtime for this upcoming season. Warren is with a lot of people in thinking that the HBO version of the show had become boring and that the relaunching of the show on Showtime will help. He had this to say on the new version of the show to Boston.com....

Former NFL star Warren Sapp will be an integral part of the series. Sapp, who will team with Cris Collinsworth, Phil Simms, and James Brown, promises the show will be an improvement.

"I would hope to God it would be because the one on HBO just got bland," said Sapp, not one to edit himself. "It got bland, it got boring, and it just sat there that it was a foregone conclusion that somebody was supposed to tune in because it was what it was. You have to entertain the people. I think us four guys are diverse in every way possible and complement each other. We've got two champions. We've got a quarterback, a receiver, a defensive lineman, and a non-football guy. We've got four guys who are respected throughout the league."
Seems like standard operating procedure right? The show is moving networks and people need a reason to watch, so he hypes it up a little. I'm also inclined to agree with Sapp in that the show really didn't bring anything new to the table in the last few years, but apparently those comments rubbed one Peter King the wrong way. From MMQB via Fanhouse....
It'll be interesting to see the first production meeting at Showtime, when someone reads that quote to that boring co-host of the HBO show, Cris Collinsworth, who is only the best studio analyst in recent sports TV history. He never "entertained the people.'' No, not Cris. Remember last year, Warren, when every other sports TV analyst was covering his rear end on Bill Belichick and Spygate -- and I mean every one -- and Collinsworth ripped him a new one for dishonoring the game? There's a case of the totally bland Collinsworth just showing up for the paycheck every week. I can hear Sapp in that production meeting next week: "Cris, I didn't mean you. You're the greatest! It was all those other guys who put me to sleep!''
Ooooooooooh snap! We've got a budding analyst war before the show even starts!!! The first show on the new network is September 10th and I think this little tiff just gained it one new viewer.

NBC To Hire Dan Patrick And Reunite Him With Olbermann

Monday, July 07, 2008

Wow. How about this little bit of breaking news for a Monday afternoon? NBC is going to bring on Dan Patrick to work with Olbermann during his highlight section during halftimes of the network's Sunday night games....

Dan Patrick, who left ESPN last year to create his own syndicated radio program and write a column for Sports Illustrated, will join NBC Sports where he will be reunited with Keith Olbermann to call the N.F.L. highlights on “Football Night in America.” NBC is scheduled to make the announcement at 2 p.m. Eastern.

NBC is looking to recreate the chemistry and quirky humor that Patrick and Olbermann demonstrated when they were co-anchors on ESPN’s “SportsCenter,” which they dubbed “The Big Show.” Olbermann joined “Football Night” last year, but is best known now as the host of MSNBC’s nightly “Countdown” program.
I love the two together as much as the next person but it just makes zero sense to hire more people for that studio show. This hire makes seven employees that currently work on the show and that's just way too many cooks in the kitchen. I wish nothing but fun times for the two, but I don't know how they're going to get to say what they want with Costas, Collinsworth, Bettis, Barber and Peter King vying for airtime as well. It'll be interesting.

Sports Illustrated To Bring Back The 'Point After' Column

Friday, December 07, 2007

Rick Reilly's departure from SI has brought on a ton of questions about the publication, but none bigger than what would replace his "Life of Reilly" column on the last page of the magazine. Sports Illustrated has decided to bring back the column Frank Deford penned from 1986 to 1998. "Point After" will grace the final pages of Sports Illustrated effective immediately, but will feature a neat little twist.

There will be a different writer doing the column each week (exciting I know). And this week's "Point After" author is Peter King! And can guess who he's talking about? Why Brett Favre of course (he is the Sportsman of the Year you know)!!!

I've covered Brett Favre throughout his pro career, and when people ask, "What's Favre really like?" I might tell a story about his dead-on imitation of Billy Bob Thornton's character in Sling Blade, or about the time on a hunting trip that I heard him tracking his prey by cooing, "Here grousy-grousy-grousy."
Aw, that's cute. I thought Dan Patrick was going to be picking up where Reilly left off, but I guess that's not the case. Can we have Dr. Z do a column about his career .343 picking percentage next?

Update: Correction- The old "Point After" had the rotating writer aspect as well.

Keith Olbermann Implores You To Do Something

Sunday, August 26, 2007

What it is...I have no idea. Maybe it's just me, but I'd like my Football with a little less anger. It is just a "game" after all. I don't care if we are talking about Mike Vick....no one ever needs to be THIS serious....

I'm so confused. So I'm supposed to hope that Vick comes back soon why? Because jail sucks? Isn't that the whole point? Someone help me out here.

Also, Jerome Bettis' orchestrated explanation of how he wasn't calling Coach Cowherd out was the biggest hunk of garbage ever. I can't believe I'm saying this, but....

Can I have Peter King back?

The Daily Show vs. SNIFNIAON- Round 1

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

Ding! Here's Jon Stewart's take on NBC Sports' coverage of the Michael Vick case. Enjoy...

Oh Tiki....they hate you already. And I forgot who said this in the comments yesterday, but I agree....this site could have been created "solely for the purpose of destroying Tiki Barber".

(Thanks to Jason at Ballhype for the tip.)

P.S.- SNIFNIAON stands for "Sunday Night Is Football Night In America On NBC". Just combined the two slogans to make it "easier" for everyone.

Eli Manning Grows A Set, Trashes Tiki

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

It's still beyond me how someone who trashes coaches in the media and throws teammates under the bus during interviews got a job in network TV (it's not like them to hire people like this). But alas, the quientessential teammate got a job with NBC. If you saw Tiki's debut on Sunday you know he's still ragging on the Giants, and just like last year.....I'm sure everyone in New York is just begging Tiki to shut the hell up.

Well now that he's gone...someone has. That someone is Elisha Manning, and he did so on ESPN 1050 in New York....

"I don't always believe everything Tiki says. I feel very comfortable. And I saw the [halftime show] last night and it seemed very rehearsed, kind of like his pregame speeches in a way," Manning said. "I feel confident in what I'm doing in getting the team ready. And if you ask any of the players around here who the leader is of this offense, they're going to say me."

"I'm not gonna lose any sleep over what Tiki says at halftime of a preseason game. Tiki is just making a smooth transition into his role as media and that's just part of their deal," Manning added.
Burn! Welcome to the Thunderdome Tiki!!! This is going to be a hard battle for you to win. Well it will be a hard battle, up until Eli throws 3 picks in the opening game of the season against the Cowboys......on NBC. Okay....nevermind.

I like the trash-talking Elisha, but please do something first. Life isn't going to be easier this year with Tiki yucking it up with Peter King, and not protecting your ass on third down with a dinky flare to the right side.

2007-2008 NFL Season Announcing Preview: Sunday Night Is Football Night

Monday, August 13, 2007

Sunday Night Is Football Night! Sunday Night is Football Night!

It's like a cancer.....you will hear that slogan until you want to rip your ears off. To tell you the truth ....I don't even mind it. I don't mind it because NBC could have Jerome Bettis and Peter King strip at halftime and I'd still watch.

Here's all you really need to know.....

1. NBC has the best schedule of teams all year long.
2. Even though Madden and Michaels are old as hell, they get a free pass (to some degree) unless Michaels is complaining about Indoor fireworks.
3. As random as the Studio Show is....it's still the best in the business. It's the only one that actually talks about Football (Frank Caliendo dressing up and making jokes about Bradshaw does not count).
4. The Flex Scheduling

Sure they have about 10,000 people for the Studio Show, John Madden isn't always sure what city he's in, Al Michaels seems bored with life, and Andrea Kramer is way too giddy for my tastes.....But they're still better than any other collection a Network could put together. Who cares if it's a little over the top.

Tuesday, June 19, 2007

Just curious because Peter King is openly and admittedly breaking the law. From PK's latest Monday Morning Quarterback....

10. I think these are my non-football thoughts of the week

a. I know it's illegal to even imply this, but there's not a lot of better things to do in the world on a nice early-summer night than smoke a Cuban Cohiba, which I was lucky enough to be able to do the other night to celebrate 27 years of wedded bliss.

b. Who woke up Kaz Matsui? The guy's playing like Ichiro.

First....I wouldn't be openly admitting that you're breaking the law on these here internets. The Federalies will take you down to Chinatown for something like that. Second....why is the name Ichiro italicized?

Peter King Just Now Learns About Friday Night Lights AND Picks The Super Bowl Winner, All In the Same Article!

Monday, June 04, 2007

I think Peter King isn't bad on TV. The guy has great contacts and always seems to have some insider information to provide "Sunday Night Football in America The All-Time Fabulous Show", or whatever they call it.

Well, I know I'm not breaking any new ground here, but his column is completely the opposite. I have no idea how I came across this, but he's already predicting the winner of Super Bowl XLII....

Feb. 3, 2008, in the desert: Colts 44, Saints 37. My advice: Score your tickets now. It's going to be one of the best Super Bowls ever. And the zaniest.
Why do I have a feeling they won't post 81 points? Not that I don't trust Mr. King, but that seems unlikely to me. One other thing struck me as odd, and I will leave you to discuss in the comments.

You work for NBC and you work in Football....How haven't you seen Friday Night Lights?
Before my vacation began, I asked NBC boss Dick Ebersol which show I should download to my IPod. "Friday Night Lights,'' he said without hesitation. I took him up on it, downloading all of season one, and he's right. The parenting stuff in there is as good as the football stuff.

Interesting story coming out of Miami.......

According to the Miami Herald via the The Big Lead

Daunte Culpepper confronted Steve Young after comments Young made during the X-Mas game this past Monday. Culpepper apparently was in a luxury box and heard Young say that "he's been missing meetings". Well Daunte decided to take matters into his own hands....

''I don't miss meetings,'' Culpepper said as he waited to confront Young outside the ESPN broadcast booth. ``That's not who I am. I'm working so hard to get back right now, and I don't need to hear someone who doesn't even know me say I'm missing meetings and I need to work harder.''

Culpepper felt so strongly about the inaccuracy of Young's allegations, he left his suite in search of him, a trek that led him a considerable distance from his box to the press box. Young came out of the broadcast booth nearly five minutes after Culpepper arrived.

The two quarterbacks spoke in a corner for several minutes. At one point, former Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann, a Monday Night Football commentator, also joined the conversation.

Young had this to say....

''I made the mistake of not calling Daunte himself,'' Young said afterward. ``He was doing rehab, he was doing all kinds of other things. He tells me he wasn't [missing meetings]. He looked me straight in the eye. Joe [Theismann] is going to fix it on the air for me.''
Well that's all well and good Young, but there's one thing you're over-looking.....YOU LIED! Why does ESPN allow this to take place? All the time people just say random crap on the air, and when they are called out they back-pedal and it's forgotten.

Yes Daunte hasn't been as vocal a leader as he should, but I really don't think he wanted to interrupt the season. The sad thing is that I was watching when Steve Young said that, and I believed him......straight up. Why wouldn't you believe him? Daunte has been painted as not a hard worker. He's taken a chain back from a paralyzed high school kid. And then there was the Sex Boat thing that got him bumped out of Minnesota. But to spin your lie about someone's character like you have some inside info is just wrong.

Damn, and I liked Steve Young too. Like TheBigLead says.....Peter King now looks good. He does straight up reporting and people respect him for it. Now just stop talking about lattes and I'll read your articles.
