Welcome Boston, Houston, and San Antonio......I'd Like to Assssk You A Few Questions.
Monday, June 04, 2007
Hopefully the readers coming from the Houston Chroicle, San Antonio News-Express, and the Boston Globe(!?) have stuck around to check out some other things in the world of announcing and YouTubeage on the site. We've got a nice little growing community in these here interparts, and you are more than welcome to join in the fun.
Why have I welcomed you instead of just going about my normal day you ask? Well, an Anon reader from Boston posed an interesting debate in the Manny Post put together by our fabulous weekned editor Mr. OMDQ, and that is....
The list of clueless announcers continues to grow. It's easy to keep McCarver at the top of the list, although Joe Morgan is mounting a strong challenger for the top position.- AnonymousSo here's my question for you the AA reader....
"Who's The Worst Analyst In Baseball?"
Pretty straight-forward right? Right. We've pretty much narrowed it down to two (although some seem to think Hawk Harelson could give them a run), and it's your job to decide who's the "Crappiest Analyst in Baseball". Vote or Die kids!
I'm sitting here trying to cast the first vote, but I can't for the life of me pick one or the other. Give your reasoning in the comments, and you might be able to sway me. Is there even a right answer?
P.S.- If you have another entry be sure to say who and why.
Labels: ESPN Baseball, FOX Baseball, Joe Morgan, Tim McCarver

Don't underestimate how bad Hawk is.
even though it's radio Suzyn Waldman sucks.
I was very fortunate to be at Fenway park for last night's game. Fortunate because I was able to see the game without the ESPN commentary. Fox handles the playoff games, so I voted for McCarver. Plus I remember when he called Bronson Arroyo "Brandon Arroho". If "Morgan's magic" was fresher in my mind I may have voted differently.
McCarver v. Morgan:
1. CONTENT
Morgan and McCarver are equally bad in terms of content. (As in, "I can't believe these guys get paid to say the crap that comes from their mouths...") However, McCarver will actually offer an opinion when asked to provide one. Sure, it's banal, illogical, and marred by lame attempts at humor, but McCarver tries. Morgan cannot and will not answer a direct question with a direct answer. It's almost as if Morgan realizes that he is a moron, and he doesn't want to go on record with more evidence of his idiocy.
2. ON AIR PERSONA
McCarver is developmentally disabled, but he is sort of a good sport about the whole thing. Joe Morgan has never met a player as good as Joe Morgan (or Tony Perez). Morgan comes across as downright mean-spirited at times. Not a great trait for a broadcaster.
3. PUBLISHED WORKS
McCarver's book sucks. In fact, it sucks so badly that it forces me to use the word "suck," a word which I find mildly distasteful. That said, McCarver's "Baseball for Brain Surgeons..." seems like a cross between "The Grapes of Wrath" and a Tom Emanski video after the sheer mind-numbing mess that is Joe Morgan's "Baseball for Dummies." This book actually caused me to LOSE interest in and knowledge of beisbol. For example, Joe informs us that wins are the best way to measure the effectiveness of pitchers. The man really IS that clueless. Sad, really.
My vote goes to Joe Morgan, but I have to admit that Harrelson, McCarver, and Morgan are more alike than different.
I gotta go with McCarver. At least with Joe Morgan, I can chalk it up to "the old days when I played were better" stubbornness. McCarver will just say bizarre stuff sometimes.
The difference is when I yell at my TV with Joe, it's "YOU'RE WRONG, DUMBASS", and when it's at Tim, it's "what the fuck are you talking about?"
McCarver is not just the worst announcer in the history of Earth, though Craig Ehlo doing Zag games is pretty damn close.
On Saturday, McCarver said those Boston fans who wore blond girl masks in honor of A-Rod were doing so "good-naturedly." The people who booed him on Saturday were doing so with mean spirits.
I didn't understand that point.
I've had multiple experiences where people who don't even know anything about baseball find A.J. and Hawk (White Sox) unlistenable. Even worse that I'm a Tigers fan and they're the ultimate homers.
mccarver wins in a race closer than the belmont, strictly because fox has the rights to the cs/world series.
Great Great analysis so far folks....keep it coming. At about 150 votes Morgan is 53%, McCarver 44%, and Other has 4%.
I loathe Joe Morgan with every fiber of my being. That said, I'm going with Dukie V. I'd rather poke a sharp stick in my one good eye than ever listen to Vitale ever again.
Chris Wheeler....He actually makes listeners dumber more then the other two.
I like rally mugs that they give out at the ballpark on rally mug day. It's a good idea to give them out. My daughter likes them. I might have to get her one before I leave the ballpark.
Sometimes I like fish tacos. But only when I'm in the mood for fish tacos will I eat one, or maybe two.
Rod Allen gets my vote. Analyst for the Tigers. Guy is a frekin' idiot. "You see Mario, he needs to try and get a double play here since there is one out." REALLY, ROD??? Look up the Rod Allen Drinking Game on Google. You'll be drunk by the second inning.
I should have proofread my earlier comment. Sorry.
Anyways, he's not really an announcer most of the time, but Steve Phillips is starting to make me hate him. I'm about sick of him saying managers have a duty to teach young men how to be young men.
Also, Don Sutton sucks more and more each day.
Nobody's listed John Kruk? Stunning. The two-headed combo of Kruk-Phillips on BBTN is the personification of the opposite of logic. Then again, considering that neither of them do anything remotely considered "analysis", I can see why nobody's mentioned them.
Joe actually says a few things that make you think he understands a little about the game. McCarver just seems like he is dumb.
I don't like many announcers, and as an avid Tiger fan I have to say I like Hawk and AJ. That being said, we have the worst announcer in the history of sports with Rod Allen. I hate listening to him with the white hot heat of the sun. Quick story: Jeremy Bonderman is batting with a runner on third. He is the worst hitter in the Majors. They attempt a squeeze; luckily JB fouls it off. Anyone who knows anything about baseball is like, "what are they doing??" Rod Allen says, "Jim Leland is a genius, that's a great play!" After the game, Leland said that it was a huge mistake he would never try something so stupid. Rod Allen is such a pathetic HOMER. He says we have to start calling Sheffield Scary not Gary, and constantly says Brandon Inge is the best 3rd basemen in the AL ("He gets to the railing as good as anyone" ????)
Vent over. Rod Allen is the WORST.
Listening to Rod Allen is one of the worst things in the world.
who was more evil hitler or stalin?
who is better manning or brady?
eitehr way you are correct.
