New Mexico Bowl Open Thread

Saturday, December 20, 2008

(Do you dare bet against a man rockin' that kind of 'stache?)

Game: New Mexico Bowl
Teams: Fresno State Bulldogs (7-5) vs. Colorado State Rams (6-6)
Location: University Stadium, Albuquerque, NM
Start: 2:30 PM EST. Beer and/or vodka is perfectly acceptable; it will make this game appear competitive.
Announcers and Network: Joe Tessitore and Rod Gilmore, ESPN
Odds: Fresno State (-2.5)
S2N's Pick: Pat Hill's Mustache Riders. Senior QB in Tom Brandstater and more experienced coach going up against a threadbare Mountain West team with a first-year coach, although Steve Fairchild did get them to bowl-eligible. So that's commendable.

"He certainly gets in and out of the hole quickly."

This game isn't that bad so far.

That's a Gilmore special if I ever read one, Bazooka.

49er16 - I didn't expect the Rams to have fight in them. Maybe that was misguided.

Join me tomorrow for the live Football Night in America blog at jamescraven-theofiles.blogspot.com, and take a gander at a few of my Halloween/cosplay outfits I've worn.

"We'll probably see a direct snap to Johnson here"- Tessitore as CSU's QB lines up wide, thanks Capt Obvious.

Hell of a block by one of CSU's OL on that play also took out two Fresno players.

And Bazooka Jones with the early nominee for "Most pornoriffic line by a announcer".

"Does he get the plane? Absolutely."

His foot was a 8 inches out.

But back to what I planned to mention...
For some reason the awful logo for this bowl just keeps making me think of the XFL.

I have to say the ads from New Mexico's tourism board with the aliens are making me laugh a ton.

ESPN must be on crack again...

They just showed the same stat that CSU's coach was the first ever coach to lead a team to a bowl game in his first season...

Which was the same thing they said about Navy's coach no more than an hour ago

Anon

If I read it correctly, he was first in that conference.

@S2N

Agree about tourism commercials.

If you want to talk about ESPN being on crack, Anonymous, note that today on the ticker at the bottom, for the St. Petersburg Bowl, they are saying that this is the first appearance in the bowl for USF and Memphis. I know, they're giving that stat for all of today's bowls, but I wonder why it'd be the first appearance in that particular bowl for both teams... you know, I just don't like ESPN. That is a minor reason why out of an entire sea of reasons, but yes, I don't like that network.

69 to the house for the Mustache Riders.

Yes, this is starting to get out of hand.

I don't get a chance to hear ol' Rod Gilmore much and boy is this fucking awful!

My favorite so far is when he castigated the official violently for an imprecise explanation of a personal foul call which was relatively insignificant.

Then he turns around and COMPLETELY talks as if he has 0 concept of what is and is not a TD. Im willing to give him benefit of the doubt that he just is too stupid to express himself properly, but after railing on the officials for the exact same thing!?

Rod: "Now he got the ball into the endzone, but he stepped out of bounds at the 2 yd line.."

Tessitore: "now, it's whether or not the ball has crossed the plane when he stepped out"

Rod: "see, he DID get the ball in the end zone, but it doesnt matter because he stepped out of bounds before that."

Tessitore....

Rod: "He's out at the 2 yd line, its obvious right there, he stepped out.. (implying that meant it couldnt have been a TD)

just stupid shit Rod. don't waste 1 min of analysis with that amateur hour bullshit again.

Rod Gilmore has now made 2 suicide references/metaphors in explaining his desire to see better defense played.

A bonus Capt Obvious from todays Capitals-Flyers game: Keith Jones (Flyers broadcaster) with this bit of brilliance: " You can get all the shots you want, but if they dont go in it doesnt matter."

Flyers were outshot 48-28, but won game 7-1.

The sports day just gets worse, later it is Saint Cindy Crosby on HNIC, Ravens-Cowgirls on NFLN, so BYU-Arizona by default for me.

"Steve Fairchild with his NFL pedigree, taking a chance there." - Tessitore

Really? NFL coaches are the biggest bunch of chickensh*t play not to lose coaches at any level of sport.

"You cant teach height" - Gilmore

Wendi Nix is murdering the host's seat for college football today. Rece Davis will have nothing to sit on when the A team returns. Unless it's Wendi Nix.

That woman needs to stick to looking pretty and beginning her sentences with, "I just talked to...."

Yeah, I thought of mentioning Nix constantly misspeaking and stepping over her own words earlier on, as she's doing pretty bad today. Is she usually like this? I presume not, but wow. I wish the MagicJack bowl was on now instead of a few minutes. When that thread gets up, expect a lot of comedy from everyone concerning the sponsor and infomercials.

Nix isn't this bad usually.

I blame a crew of analysts she doesn't usually work with. There's something to be said for chemistry. You know people's timing better the more you work with them, and she's used to Jesse Palmer, not mediating between three guys.

Oh man, these idiot announcers just referenced the Remember the Titans (a movie I thought was overrated; I hated the characters) speech about being perfect and not fumbling.

They then referenced the John Heisman quote of "Gentlemen, it is better to have died a small boy than to fumble this football." without actually saying the quote, as it's "not G-rated" or some such nonsense. Like I said, these guys are idiots.

Fitting that Kyle Bell picks the onside.

If you've never heard of this kid - which you haven't probably - look him up. That young man represents the best that college football can offer.
