Super Bowl XLIII Open Thread

WHAT: Super Bowl XLIII
WHO: Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Arizona Cardinals
WHERE: Raymond James Stadium, Tampa Bay, Florida
WHEN: Kickoff 6:28pm (NBC)
SPREAD: Steelers -7, O/U 47
ANNOUNCERS: Al Michaels, John Madden, Andrea Kremer, Alex Flanagan, Peter King
AA's PICK: I've been back and forth on this one a bunch of times, but it boils down to quarterback play. With that said, there's no one hotter right now than Kurt Warner, and I just can't trust Roethlisberger against a surging defense. I'm going Cardinals for the win, but it would behoove you to just take the seven points.
Cardinals 28 - Steelers 23 (MVPs: Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald)
I'll be trying to throw videos up throughout the game if I can, but I'll definitely have up your highlights and quotes later on tonight. Enjoy the game.

I'm really dreading the Hudson national anthem tonight. She's going to over-do it and pull a Patti LaBelle on us, I have a feeling.
@JFein, I am muting the anthem with Hudson.
Yeah I'm in no mood to do a huge live blog, I just want to follow the game.
@ JFein, what makes her different? We are probably the only country that turns a national anthem into a "I can sing it better than you" contest.
I may listen to it, because it would be nice to see her perform well after her personal tragedies.
Kurt Warner will win.
Told you
Holy crap, Brenda Warner looks like a woman.
@ SSR: I'm in the same boat tonight as well. Often times during live blogs I use the commercials to go through the quotes and get updates on the NFL.com GameCenter if I fell behind. I'll be watching the game and chiming in here with my comments/thoughts/dumb announcer quotes.
Hudson tries to much to hit the really high note, and as much as it will hurt to listen, especially after the murder of several of her family members, she'll do too much and it'll end in disaster.
What happened to good looking flight attendants?
Just sing the damn song!
dammit why couldnt they get uh, that fat cute chick...from the NFC championship game.
That was horrible!!!
Jennifer didn't do that bad of a job, but definitely not as good as Whitney Houston at SB XXV. I had it at 2:18.
I forgot her name, but she is the ABSOLUTE best singer of the national anthem by far.
and G.I joe looks mildly sick
I loved G.I. Joe when I was a kid.
What the? Goofy ad about NBC Monday nights...
lol...that was a pretty stupid plug
Roger Craig is still The Man
i say HEADS
Elway looks like he is 55 years old.
knew it
NFC wins the coin toss again!
Advice to General Petraeus: Don't take up professional coin-flipping.
Andrea is pissed Brady is not in the game.
jeez....SHAFT the kurt warner story already!
Take another drink if they mention the story of Warner being a grocery store clerk.
lets go then
Good grief he was wide open.
This is looking easy for the Steelers.
Penetration.
As soon as I say that, the Cards stuff Parker for a loss of 4. Go figure.
I guess the Whisenhunt factor isn't that big of deal.
Can Madden work the word "penetration" more times into one thought?
It wasn't a John Elway channeling, but damn that was an impressive run by Roethlisberger.
And Whisenhunt is wasting a timeout.
Here's a guy who when he runs he goes faster. Here's a guy who when he eats a lot he takes a big dump.
You get some turducken if you know who said that.
Whisenhunt is going Norv with this challenge.
Funny bud light commercial.
Oh look, a disputed big ben TD.....
The mention of Super Bowl XL has SSR and the whole city of Seattle crying in their coffee.
Holy Crap! Whisenhunt got it right.
Ooh, I was wrong. At first I thought that was a clear TD. But alas, what do I know.
@ JFein, what did you have for the shortest field goal made?
And that decision by Tomlin alone will give Arizona the Super Bowl.
What a horrible decision.
NUT SHOT!
Best commercial, thus far.
@ 49er16: 33-yarder. Yeah, I'm wrong.
Although I was right when I said the Cards would win the coin toss.
That fumble was a bad Omen for the Cards.
Arizona just keeps blowing the handoff and never turning it over.
Hey a punt!
Lawrence Timmons had himself buried into Anquan Boldin a bit too long for normal football player...
That Jack Black movie looks horrible.
Conan made me laugh for the first time ever!
The Steelers are beating the Cards at their own game.
Who's performing at halftime tonight? You think that they would say something about it....
And right now the Cardinals defense is looking like they have "Happy To Be Here" Syndrome.
Cromartie just made a great play.
All right Fresno St. is being represented.
Wow, generally when you have a guy 5-yards on the other side of the line of scrimmage, the refs call it on the defense.
"That's Ben Roethlisberger just being Superman." - John Madden
Or Eli Manning. One of the other.
Bruce Arians and "good" is an oxymoron.
The Steelers are keeping the ball out of Warner's hands.
@49er16 6:52
Mel Brooks did history farce better with "History of the World Pt 1"
Ah, Mr. Potato Head, classic.
I guess Vin Diesel and Paul Walker can't find any other work.
Did we really need to see that guy contract AIDS?
"For a wide receiver, he's the scrappiest guy there is. He loves the physical stuff." - John Madden
Okaaaaayy...
The Doritos commercial has been the best so far.
@ JFein didn't you have Garry Russell for the first score?
Warner and the Cards need a long, time-consuming drive, if for no other reason than to give that defense some rest.
The first diet cola for men? So all other diet colas are targeted for women?
@ 49er16: I had Fitzgerald.
Yeah, now you know why I don't like to gamble.
Holy crap, maybe I won't be miserable tomorrow!
The dating horses was a good commercial.
Now the Steelers should come back and attack.
That may have been one of the ugliest Super Bowl touchdowns I've ever seen. But alas, it's a Cardinal touchdown and SSR is throwing stuff at his TV, right?
Ugh, a G commercial.
That Cars.com commercial was not a very good one, either.
"He's so quick he got ball." - John Madden
How many times must Madden mention penetration?
The bottom of the Super Bowl logo blends in way too easily with the field. Just an all round bad logo this year.
And to think that last year they had one of the best.
Do my eyes deceive me? Did Arizona actually stop the Steelers on 3rd down in Steeler territory?
@ SSR: The same number of times he must mention Brett Favre.
And here come the Cards.
Damn, I just realized how quick the first half has been. We kicked off an hour ago and now there's 3:37 remaining in the half.
And Al just does the its a small world story NFL version with James and Warner winding up on same team
They have to get rid of the "sideline can call timeout" rule.
Oh man, another E-Trade miracle baby...
"If you know Dick LeBeau, he's 71 going on 48." - John Madden
"And you know his mom. She's 95. That's some good genes." - Al Michaels
Both seem rather jealous...
"If you know Dick LeBeau, he's 71 going on 48" - Madden
WTF ?
I surrender, just kill off the Seattle franchises and leave me be.
"If you read all those names, it'd be halftime before you finished." - John Madden
Yeah I am going to be a wreck tomorrow.
Cheer up, SSR, I was actually happy when the Giants won the Super Bowl.
Then again, they played a team that I actually hate more...
"There's Boldin who gets banged down." - Al Michaels
Nice visual there, Al.
Look at that big boy run!
Is Harrison alive? Good lord.
And SSR is absolutely giddy!
That's why Harrison is the Defensive player of the year.
Oh my, they might want to take a look at that. Holy cow, this is nuts!
I LOVE YOU JAMES HARRISON!
James Harrison runs like James Brown - Madden
I thought all James Brown did was dance? WTF?
Wow, an end to the half.
That may have just won the Steelers the Super Bowl...
Now I am going to be miserable. I don't want to see the Steelers pass the 49ers in all time Super Bowl wins.
Why can't Alex Flanagan work the sidelines for every game?
"You can tell it was a touchdown by the roar of the crowd." -Al Michaels
Actually, we could tell it was a TD when the ref told us the play was upheld
JAMES HARRISON!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
INTs at the end of the half are never good.
/Bitter Skins fan (SB 18 vs Oakland)
Any chances of The Boss having a wardrobe malfunction?
Is Clarence Clemons dressed like a priest ?
Maybe because I am from California, but I have never understood The Boss and why he is so popular.
I wouldnt have minded if Faith Hill had a wardrobe malfunction
Don't worry 49er16. We don't expect Californians to understand much of anything. (Sorry, but you kind of walked into that one)
Ending the set with "Glory Days". Appropriate considering he's been coasting off the success of Born in the USA for 25 yrs.
ok, the NBC lmao ad was even creepier the second time around.
Getting your picture taken with Terry McAulay is supposed to be a way to reward kids for playing 60?
What was Springsteen's first song???
"[James Harrison] runs through the entire state of Arizona to get that touchdown." - Al Michaels
Er, Al, I know you're trying to be punny funny and all, but we're in Tampa, as in, no where near the state of Arizona!
Does the Zebra get the credit for that tackle?
That's an incomplete pass.
If I were Arizona, I'd use this time to draw up a fake punt.
The Steelers fans seem upset over that call. I thought it was a fairly obvious reversal.
Oh, if anything that should have been intentional grounding on Big Ben. That's a huge break for the Steelers.
I think a Steelers TD here is game over
Wow....Adrian Wilson just shot his team in the foot.
Game. Set. Match.
"Meanwhile Mike Holmgren is sitting here having flashbacks to his last Super Bowl." - Al Michaels
And an interception there and Adrian Wilson would have been credited with the greatest boneheaded move in Super Bowl history.
That was some Reid-esque playcalling there
Wow, that Cardinal defense is giving it everything they have. They're making mistakes but they're fighting and they have somehow, someway held the Steelers to yet another field goal and have kept this a 2-score game.
Now the question becomes will we see the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history?
That CareerBuilder.com ad was funny.
/Waits for PETA to sue over the punching of that "small animal."
Pittsburgh is being handed the title yet they don't want it.
TOUCHDOWNS NOW!
Cards are absolutely killing themselves w/ penalties on both sides of the ball.
Arizona doesn't want this game.
This game is going by so quickly that many of the commercials probably won't play tonight.
Man, I have no vested interest in this game, but there have been enough bad or questionable calls against the Cardinals that I feel like I have to root for them. Garbage.
Not that I'd watch that garbage, but the "celebrity" bar is really low these days
This game is over. Obama is once again laughing at McCain.
Can't they just have Herschel alone in the Celebrity Apprentice? That way, Donald Trump can fire each personality he has.
Wow! The Cardinals make a play and there is no flag.
Advice to Arizona: SCORE A TOUDCHDOWN NOW! (Otherwise the Steelers are the national champions)
Finally, the Polamalu ad!
And that, was, um, strange.
Wow! Ed McMahon must be hurting. He has to schill for Cash4Gold.
The game is getting boring now.
"Working with alacrity." - Al Michaels showing off his advanced vocabulary.
Any second now the Cards will make a mistake...
Remember "alackrity", AA?
All right, a Cal grad makes a big play.
Well, when youre in the same ad as MC Hammer, that cant be a good thing.
That's seemingly the first penalty on Pittsburgh tonight. Seem familiar at all, SSR? ;-)
It's nice to see Ken Whisenhunt channeling Andy Reid with that timeout call.
Yeah, but the officiating hasn't sucked tonight.
Why couldn't the Eagles do that to Hightower on that go ahead touchdown?!?
Touchdown Arizona!
This game has just got interesting. Once again I am wrong.
Hell of a catch by Fitzgerald
Misery.
@ SSR you think this is bad. What about my SF Giants. They haven't won a Series since arriving in SF and the Diomondbacks win one in their fourth year.
Steelers not playing Steeler defense and getting three points on six downs is lame....
And here's the big time-consuming, potential Super Bowl winning drive for Big Ben and the Steelers.
UH OH! SACKED! 3rd and long. I'm getting into this one. And sorry SSR, I'm finding myself more and more rooting for the Cards.
Hey, did you know Larry Fitz's dad is a sportswriter? I never knew that!
P.S.-Being from MN, I wondered why I had never read him, and it turns out, he writes for an all black newspaper, not the Tribune or the Pioneer Press. The media makes it seem like he writes for a big time news paper.
I give up.....
Well here's the drive for the Super Bowl.
instead, the Cardinals suddenly play Steelers defense.
This ain't over by any means unless the Steeler defense starts showing up. I miss the passion!
WTF was that?
That MacGruber/Pepsuber may have been the strangest commercial thus far.
Who's going to vote for the MVP?
Worst. MacGyver Parody. Ever.
It's about time the Cards start getting the calls.
"Ike Taylor not swaggin right there." - Al Michaels
Huh?
This game has gotten just a wee bit interesting.
Steelers employing prevent to perfection
Don't panic yet Steelers fans and SSR. This does not look like this drive will use the entire last 3:52.
Wow, this has quickly gone from what looked like a guaranteed TD drive to 3rd and 20.
How is that a huge penalty, Al. The ball moves back about 6 inches.
Does Big Ben get sacked for the safety?
Finally the Steelers defense showed up. Now, come on Big Ben, nail it!
Arizona still has two timeouts.
Dispicable...Harrison should be ejected.
WOW!!!!!
OH MY FUCKING GOD!!!!!!!!!!!
I predicted a 20-16 Steeler win. I'm scared. Hold me, Mommy.....
@SSR you should be happy. Remember the Steelers stole your Super Bowl three years ago.
"This is big." - John Madden
Thanks Captain Obvious!
UNBELIEVEABLE!
They scored too Fast!
The Steelers sure didn''t play Steelers football the last few minutes....
WOW, now this is an f'ing finish!
Repeat after me: The Arizona Cardinals (THE ARIZONA FUCKING CARDINALS!) are 2:37 minutes away from winning a Super Bowl.
And so much for my short-lived ESP.
Looks like the Steelers will stay at five SuperBowls!
WTF ? Game on the line and James Harrison is the one covering Fitzgerald ?
What a flagfest.
Yeah, Seattle sports is done.
And the Cards are exactly that, 2:37 away from the Super Bowl. Now it's Big Ben's turn to give us something we'll never forget.
Coming back from being down by 13 against the best defense! That's what wins games, I guess.
Anybody up for OT ?
@ SSR: I know this is a depressing day for yourself and Seattle sports, but please refrain from destroying your TV and/or jumping out the window ;-)
Still hope Big Ben call pull it off. It's time for a two minute drive...
@ JFein, no, it's done, it's never coming back and this city is an embarrassment.
This sure beats the hell out of the last Super Bowl played in Raymond James Stadium.
Why aren't they going to Jim Cantore for the weather?
Could we have another Scott Norwood moment?
This is crazy!
I WANT OVERTIME!!!
HOLY CRAP!
TOUCHDOWN PITTSBURGH! THIS IS ABSOLUTELY INSANE!
SEATTLE SPORTS LIVES!
SEATTLE SPORTS LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE SANTONIO!!!!!!!
"The emotions of this game have been over the moon." - Al Michaels making no sense, and yet, it seems to make all the sense in the world.
no doubt! both feet on the ground.....!
First Vinitari and now Holmes. I think Warner has been praying to the wrong God.
All the cameras NBC has at game, and still cant clearly show feet down
The only good news for the Cardinals is that they have 2 timeouts.
Word verification: cheese.
How is it that every Super Bowl that Kurt Warner plays in it comes down to the last play?
Fuck! The Steelers move ahead of the 49ers in Super Bowl wins.
I think that arm was coming forward...
3 dl vs 5 OL no way Warner should have been under that much pressure.
BOOYAH!!!!!!!!!!!
I think this game moves past NE Vs. NY in excitment.
Steelers.... SIX SUPERBOWLS. Love it!!!
Faith Hill is just terrible.
