Big Brown Completes The Triple Crown! Just Kidding, He Finishes Dead Last

Saturday, June 07, 2008

Well that was a letdown, but Kent Desormeuax did the right thing in slowing the horse down. Here it is in case you missed it....

Belmont is such a huge track and you have to wonder if that injury to his hoof just made it so he couldn't go the distance. Everything seems okay with Big Brown after the race, and now everyone can not pay attention to an amazing race from Da'Tara to win it.

Did Musberger really suggest spacing out the Triple Crown races?!? That's the exact opposite of what they should do.

Check out Da Blog for my thoughts on the Belmont, my epiphany on why we've seen so many Derby and Preakness winners lose the Belmont since Affirmed, and the future of horse racing.

I love when someone who has been bragging as much as Rick Dutrow gets his ass handed to him like what happened today. As Yosemite Sam once said, maybe that'll learn ya to keep yer big mouth shut!

according to a guy i know who owns horses, the injury to big brown was one that generally requires 3-4 weeks to heal. the injured hoof needs to grow out. he believes that the wiring stuff they tried as a temporary fix was a misguided effort that really never had much of a chance of working on a track that is as long and hard as belmont.

Anybody know what "slowing the horst down" means? Some sort of NY slang?

Big Brown ain't Terrell Owens.

Silly question, but how can Big Brown be 'currently 10th' in a 9 horse field (2:25 mark)?

TAS: That's not what he said. He said "Big Brown has been eased at the top of the stretch". (Although occasionally you will hear someone joke about somebody who's a long, long way behind even next-to-last as being so bad they managed to finish in n+1th place out of n.)

Pat Forde wrote it best:

"And somewhere -- wherever the racing gods live -- there was unabated laughter at this comeuppance. Karma's a female dog, babe, and so is the Triple Crown."

Maybe this'll teach Dutrow to keep his mouth shut. I was rooting for Big Brown until Dutrow opened his mouth. And now I'm laughing that he came in last.

spartandan: Look at the graphic. The graphic says in the 4th box "Big Brown - Currently 10th."

TAS...the only thing I can think is that because Casino Drive was scratched the day of the race they may not have gotten the word to the person in the control room that handles the graphics.

On the bright side, finishing dead last is better than finishing dead.

Yeah, nice choice of headlines, AA, you insensitive horse hating boob.

I completely disagree with the notion that Desormeaux was justified in pulling up the horse. There was no injury at all, Kent said so himself immediately following, he simply quit the race to protect a $50MM stud investment.

Money over integrity - just what you'd expect from Big Brown's connections.

By the way since I see no live blog for Game 2....

Anyone realize how clean shaven Mike Breen is tonight after the Game 1 goatee?
