Hank Williams Jr Back Doing MNF Intro For The 19th Straight Year

Monday, July 28, 2008

When I was younger I couldn't stand the Monday Night Football theme, but it's grown on me over the years. Even last year's addition of random artists like Brian Setzer would still get me excited that the game was coming on. Well according to AP, ESPN is bringing back Williams Jr. for another year of tunes....

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Hank Williams Jr., who has sung the opening theme for "Monday Night Football" since 1989, will continue the tradition this season.

ESPN spokesman Bill Hofheimer says Williams will again base the theme song on his hit "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight."

Williams is recording the tracks this week in Nashville, Tennessee, and will shoot the video next month in Los Angeles.
I'd also expect some guest artists here and there, but keeping the song true to its roots is definitely a good move. The song isn't amazing, but at least it's not that horrendous rendition that NBC uses for their telecasts. Still no word on whether Faith Hill will be singing that intro for the upcoming season.

Update: Okay so she is doing the song again this year. I guess it's better than Pink.

Thank goodness. Like it or not, Bocephus is a fixture with that song, and that intro is probably the biggest MNF still tradition around, now that the broadcast teams have changed and the network has changed.

NBC's intro song is just an abomination. Obviously they're trying to come up with a more "hip" version of MNF's intro, but why in the H-E-double hockey sticks do they have a female singer doing it? First it was Pink and then it was Faith Hill, can they not find some popular rock band to do it? Does 3 Doors Down have an exclusive contract with ESPN, are they unavailable?

For the life of me, I cannot understand why you would have a female pop singer sing a theme song for a FOOTBALL GAME.

Hank Williams Jr., guest starring Jon Bon Jovi, 50 Cent, and the New GMC Sierra Hybrid!

As for NBC, drop "I've Been Waiting All Day for Sunday Night", replace with Hockey Scores.

I actually went to a Hank Williams Jr. concert in Shreveport and i think this song got him the loudest cheers from the crowd.

Pretty interesting legacy to be leaving.

I'm a little confused regarding why this needs to be re-recorded? It's the same thing every year.

Hank Williams Jr. should go and do another concert in Cleveland decked out in Pittsburgh Steelers gear. Giant A-hole.

They re-record Hank's intro each year because he mentions the teams in the song.
