I've personally done worse things to ex-girlfriends in my day (nothing that I'm proud of), but the one thing I haven't done is take a shot at her on camera when first getting into her new boyfriend's hometown. I mean I haven't really had the opportunity to got that far, but that's besides the point.
You heard the comments yesterday on various outlets throughout the country, now see them for yourself. Here's your Sean Avery "Sloppy Seconds" video....
Now, I've never been referred to as a "sloppy second", and I can understand if his Ex (Elisha Cuthbert) is offended, but to level an indefinite suspension in the wake of it? Seems a little harsh to me. Well hilarious first because Avery is a dick, but harsh as well. In all honesty, I'm pretty sure that Avery wasn't the first Hockey player she dated (Mike Komisarek might have been before him), so he doesn't really have much room to talk.

heard the soundbites a couple of times now.... first time seeing the video...... I'd like to see suspensions being kept for on ice offenses or "civil law" offense..... Why would he get suspended???

The suspension was for two reasons:
1) Hockey may be a marginal sport in the US but it's the national sport in Canada and that sort of talk just doesn't fly there.
2) Avery's team played against Cuthbert's new boyfriend's team later that evening. The NHL really didn't want to see anyone trying to bury their stick in Avery's skull, much as he may deserve it.
This is definitely only fine worthy...a suspension is ridiculous.
Avery also used to date another player's (Jarrett Stoll) Girlfriend, milf Rachel Hunter

The NHL need more guys like this. Nice to see that Avery actually has a personality. Unlike most hockey players.
Indefinitley just means until he has a hearing with Bettman. In the end, he'll end up getting a 2 or 3 game suspension overall.
The fact is, it wasn't during an interivew.... he ACTIVELY sought out the reporters and the camera, to just say that ONE thing. He embarrassed his team and his league.
Free speech is free speech but when you piss off your boss, you're going to face the consequences. The Stars were going to suspend him if Bettman didn't. Plus, he would have gotten his head taken out during the game, so it's a good thing he didn't get to play.
At least he didn't ask Phaneuff how his ass tasted...

If we're going to go after people in the NHL for "conduct detrimental to the league", how about going after Bettman for taking my Whalers away from me? He's like a photo-negative of Isiah Thomas.

BTW, None other than Keith Olbermann delivered the "Worse" to Mr. Avery for his comments in his Worst Person in the World last night (12/3/08).
That's why the NHL is the NHL. It's funny and wrong to say it publicly, but not warrent a suspension
