Michael Strahan Retires, Prepare For Him On Television

Monday, June 09, 2008

With the news of Michael Strahan's retirement coming from Jay Glazer today, you can expect a Brett Favre-like load of media questions regarding the now 15-year NFL Veteran in the next few days. Obviously Strahan works well on TV because of his personality, but who would take a flyer on him?

The best fit would probably be ESPN. He would most certainly fill in with that collection of jokers, but ESPN has what seems like 45 NFL Analysts and recently hired Cris Carter for next season. CBS seems to have all of their ducks in a row when it comes to coverage and the NFL Network is cutting back, so they're persumably out of the race.

That leaves one network left and that's the outfit who broke the news of his retirement, FOX. Originally said to be pursuing Favre they would do well to add Strahan to the mix after deciding not to bring Barry Switzer back for next year. Strahan was a regular on BDSSP for the network and he definitely has a rapport those at the channel. FOX's coverage could use some player specific pieces in their pregame coverage and Strahan talking with players could balance out some of the goofy Frank Caliendo pieces.

I'd like to see him on FOX and be a regular host on BDSSP. I always have found him pretty entertaining and funny on that show(and I'm a Redskins fan lol)

Strahan is very good friends with Jay Glazer (he co-authored strahan's book last year, and was allowed to break this story)...I fully expect Strahan to join the FOX team at some point.

Giants fan here, sad to see the retirement of #92 but I'm happy for him. He had a long, successful career and going out with a ring -- you can't beat that. I think he'd fit in well at FOX, too.

Don't feel bad, AA. I once lost a spelling bee because I couldn't spell rapport -- probably because I was in 7th grade and had never heard the word before.

I can already picture him overlaughing at unfunny jokes and talking about how great it felt to have Brett Favre lay down for him and about how his selfishness lead to a Giants Super Bowl...

Yeah, he's going to be a refreshing change.

Frank Caliendo isn't funny. He is the opposite of funny.

Tony K. said on PTI today that Strahan should take his spot in the MNF booth.

@rod:

I'm forgetting someone, but Kornheiser's said that about the last spate of retirees/fired coaches (Billick, Favre, and now Strahan).

Strahan would be perfect for Inside the NFL which I think is coming back on Showtime, not that anybody gets Showtime.

It's definitely FOX for him. He's good pals with not only Glazer but Menefee from his days at MSG Network and he has a place in SoCal. But I must say, Strahan at Bristol reuniting with Kelli Naqi would have been interesting TV.
